So yes, I know the official advice is six months and that we all think waiting till then is best, but in honesty, how old were your kids when they first tasted solid food?

I don't think I know anyone in RL that waited till six months!

9 weeks (2004) but on advice of consultant paediatrician.

Crazycatlady · 08/05/2010 22:47

21 weeks. Little portions of stewed pear and things, then veg etc, no meat protein until 7 months. She was desperately grabbing food from my plate from about 17 weeks, I held out as long as I could before it became just too stressful not to feed her.

We tried baby rice and mushed carrots once each when DS was just over 5 months, and we both hated the experience. Gave up until he was a few days shy of 6 months and started BLW. He is 8.5 months now and doing wonderfully at it.

elmofan · 08/05/2010 22:53

weaned both dc's at 16weeks , i have a relation though that fed jaffa cakes to her 7 week old dc

kimbles1984 · 08/05/2010 22:54

4 months with both, were advised too, were both crying ang hungry with just milk

AngelDog · 10/05/2010 07:50

One of my relatives "managed to hold out until a week old" before she gave her daughter baby rice. Her other two allegedly started sooner. This was 30 years ago, but even so...

MilMae · 27/07/2010 21:58

seems an old thread, but here we go: I started DS on 18 weeks. He is now 27 weeks and all is gone well

zippy79 · 28/07/2010 13:37

4 and a half months. This was when DD started showing an interest in solid food so we went with that

sweetkitty · 28/07/2010 13:44

DD1 - 25 weeks
DD2 - 26 weeks BLW
DD2 - 26 weeks BLW
DS is only 12 weeks so a while yet to go

sweetkitty · 28/07/2010 13:44

oops meant DD3 - 26 weeks as well

sapphireblue · 01/08/2010 19:45

17 weeks with both of them.

ReneRusso · 01/08/2010 20:07

DD1 20 weeks (2000)
DD2 18 weeks (2002)

DD3 is 17 weeks and hasn't had any solid food yet. She isn't ready yet, but I doubt we will make it to 26 weeks.

WoTmania · 01/08/2010 20:27

5.5 months, 6.1 months, 7 months. Although actual consumption of rather than playing with the food wasn't til much later

sazlocks · 01/08/2010 22:13

6 months to the day and I don't know anyone else in RL who waited that long either.

theyoungvisiter · 01/08/2010 22:16

6 months for first one, 7 months for second (only because we were going on holiday and I didn't want to start while we were away).

As others have said, that was them playing with food on their highchair tray - they didn't actually start eating in any real quantity until nearer 8-9 months.

Most people I know weaned between 5-6 months.

theyoungvisiter · 01/08/2010 22:17

ok, just noticed the date of the OP!

What is this - archaeology week on MN or something?!

cupcake75 · 06/08/2010 14:51

24 weeks and did BLW so hardly anything went in for a while.

pinkpear · 30/08/2010 22:07

DD was 24 weeks but must admit darling 7 yr old son gave her his minimilk lolly when i was not looking at 20 weeks- apparatnly she loved it!. she is now 26 weeks and goiung strength to strength with a huge variety of pureed food and strips of bread and strips soft veg. she also demolished my strawberry cheescake.today!

sheepgomeep · 31/08/2010 00:49

ds 4 months but this was advice back then
dd 4 month but this was advice back then
dd2 3 months on advice as she had bad reflux
dd3 16 weeks has has couple of small spoons of very runny rusk today but I'm not going to push her at all, not fussed if she doesn't take to it.

I don't regret weaning at these ages, none have allergies although to soon to tell with dd3. My first 3 children eat very well, none are obese and I don't know anyone in rl who waited till 6 months or older to wean thier babies.

I really don't care if I get flamed, I just think all babies are different.

One thing that did upset me once though was seeing a 4 month old baby screaming the place down everytime his mum tried to feed him solids, in the end she would forcefeed him and shove the food in his mouth till he gagged. This was in a playgroup and it was something that was witnessed several times. Several of us had to walk out the room a few times very upset.
The poor baby obviously didn't want it.

carebear321 · 31/08/2010 01:30

DS1 4 months ( as advised by hv) now he can be fussy but will eat whatevers given.

DS2 3.5 months ( against the advice of hv as rules had the changed to 6 months because he was obviously hungry )now he loves his food and will try anything.

DD1 6 months ( as advised by hv) but am really struggling as she will only have a couple of bites of lightly mashed food but then will only eat it if its completely mashed or will gag
