So yes, I know the official advice is six months and that we all think waiting till then is best, but in honesty, how old were your kids when they first tasted solid food?

I don't think I know anyone in RL that waited till six months!

agreed, but if you do some research yourself, and not just on MN, then you should be able to sort out the good from the not so good HV advice.

Disenchanted3 · 13/03/2009 19:48

I just feel 5 months is about right, it has suited both my other 2.

blametheparents · 13/03/2009 19:51

14 weeks for DS1 In my defence he was huge and very hungry. I really could not keep up excl b/f and there didn't seem to be advice re formula or to start weaning. This was when advice was to wean at 4 months so it didn't seem so bad at the time.

23 weeks for DD

Lulumama · 13/03/2009 19:51

you do know current advice is 26 weeks or so? if rorie is showing the signs at 20 weeks, then go for it, otherwise, you don;t have to do what you did with your boys

Disenchanted3 · 13/03/2009 19:53

'current advice'

that changes all the time?

Id rather go with what I feel is right, my babies have all been big, hungry babies.

choufleur · 13/03/2009 19:53

15 weeks. he was hungry.

Disenchanted3 · 13/03/2009 19:54

I don't tend to listen to health visitors and such, they talk alot of shite IMO.

Obviously alot of it is right, but I find the stuff that i agree with is just common sense!

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 13/03/2009 19:54

DS1 was 24 weeks
DS2 was 23 ish weeks

we were puree family and started for the first week with a teaspoon of baby rice a day then a teaspoon of apple or pear each day.
It took about 6 weeks to get to two meals a day.

Lulumama · 13/03/2009 19:54

ok, well, it does not change all the time, it is just that the incorrect advice is given quite frequently.

the NHS and DoH leaflets are useful

Disenchanted3 · 13/03/2009 19:55

I love pureeing

Well it does, when I was little it was 3 month, Addison I was told 16 weeks was the reccomended age and just 18 months later I was told 5 months.

now another few years later Ive heard 6 months, now its 6.5?

Im not argueing, lol, I just find it odd that people wouls stick to something so vigourously because its the latest advice rather tham looking and listening to their child.

Every baby walks, talks, sits up, at different times but we are supposed to feed them bang on the 26 week mark?

Disenchanted3 · 13/03/2009 20:01

Its each to their own really isn't it?

Im really not bothered enough to care when other people wean actually

choufleur · 13/03/2009 20:06

from eatwee.gov.uk

"When to start

You should start giving your baby solid foods when he or she is around six months old.

"In recent years the advice about when to start babies on solid foods has changed. This is because we now know more about when babies are ready for starting solid foods and the effects of giving solid foods too early.

We now know that it?s usually best to wait until [around] six months, but all babies are different so you might want to ask your health visitor or GP for advice about when is best for your baby.

If you want to introduce solid foods before six months, make sure you check with your health visitor or GP first. And don?t give any solid foods to your baby before he or she is four months old (17 weeks)."

choufleur · 13/03/2009 20:06

that should have been eatwell.gov.uk

hercules1 · 13/03/2009 20:07

Havent the WHO been saying 6 months for must be over 10 years now? Hardly changes all teh time... Before then it was 4-6 months.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 13/03/2009 20:08

at "eatwee"

chequersmate · 13/03/2009 20:10

26 weeks exactly - she learned to sit up and first showed an interest in food the week before but it was the week of the awful snow and I couldn't be bothered get out to the supermarket to start any sooner.

4.5months, 4 months was the recommended ideal time !

sweetkitty · 13/03/2009 20:18

DD1 25 weeks
DD2 26 weeks
DD3 25 weeks

there or there abouts

I was weaned at 4 weeks old apparently, considering I was a 34 week premmie this makes me 38 weeks corrected how the hell can you feed a newborn baby food.

ChairmumMiaow · 13/03/2009 20:33

23 weeks for DS.

He was sitting unaided and picking up and eating his own fruit and veg 'chips' I wish I hadn't bothered though because apart from a few meals where he scoffed everything, it was only really good as a distraction so I could eat my own dinner, however well he could manage

Divvy · 13/03/2009 20:35

StarlightMcKenzie I waited till 7+ months

callmemamma · 13/03/2009 20:38

6 months to the day

changer22 · 13/03/2009 20:41

DS was 15 weeks

DD1 was 6 months but I don't think she properly ate anything until about 11 months.

DD2 1 week shy of 6 months.

All big babies and breastfed too.
