I'm not after any debate/argybargy - just curiuos to know what people do.
my dd is 20wks & am not sure whether she is ready for it yet - her weight gain has really slowed down & she's dropeed from teh 75th to under teh 50th percentile so I think she might be.
TIA

DD who is now 3 was weaned at 4 months
DS now 16 months was weaned at 6 months (I wouldn't wait this long if I have any more!)

BudaBeast · 18/11/2006 08:16

Ds (now 5) was about 16/17 weeks.

NotQuiteCockney · 18/11/2006 08:17

DS1 is now 5, was weaned at 16 weeks. (Total hassle, complete waste of time.)
DS2 is now 2, was weaned at 6 months. (Very easy, absolutely the best way.)

Weight gain is meant to slow around this time, they can't keep gaining as they do when they're tiny. It really is better to wait.

SparklyfestiveYellowFeathers · 18/11/2006 08:18

DD was 16 weeks exactly but I'm sure she was ready.
Ds is only 12 weeks atm. HV is talking about starting him but I dont think he'll be ready at 16 weeks.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 18/11/2006 08:19

ds1 3 months, ds2 a little later, they are 18 and 15. dd was 11 months.

dd1 when the recommended age was 4 months, but I left it till 5 1/2 months because the HV said not to rush.

dd2 - by then they had upped the age to 6 mths, but I started at 5 1/2 months because she showed all the signs. I had intended just gaving a bit of baby rice mixed with milk and waiting till 6 months to try fruit and veg.

however, this did lead to constipation, even though she was bf, so I did start adding stewed apple as well as rice.

lulumama · 18/11/2006 08:41

20 weeks for DS , he is 7 now

25 weeks for DD, she is 15 months

lulumama · 18/11/2006 08:43

and agree with NCQ -re the weight gain

and nor will solids necessarily magically make a baby sleep though

milk is still the best, most calorific and filling nutrition available to a baby of this age!

belgo · 18/11/2006 08:43

The advice I was given here in Belgium is between 4 and 6 months, and most babies here seem to be weaned around 4 months. My sister in law had a hard time understanding why I waited until five months with both my dds. If I have another baby, I'll wait until six months to wean her/him.

Blandmum · 18/11/2006 08:49

Both of mine were weaned as per instructions at the time at 4 months. Both were fine and very easy. Took to it like ducks to water,

VeniVidiVickiQV · 18/11/2006 08:53

26 weeks for DD

27 weeks DS (although not really fully until he was about 35 weeks)

More calories in milk. Boden - your DD is probably burning more calories as she is probably moving quite a bit more now.

CantSleepWontSleep · 18/11/2006 08:54

21 weeks (started earlier than planned due to reflux). It's still a hassle now at 9 months, so I wouldn't start any earlier than you have to.

Oh, and most babies lose weight when they are weaned rather than gain it - not sure if you realised that.

auntymandy · 18/11/2006 08:55

eldest 3 were started about 4 months. Bit of a faff but took to it well. Didnt rush.
Last 2 6months easy peasy

saadia · 18/11/2006 08:56

I followed guidelines - ds1 at 4 months, ds2 at 6 months.

earlysbird · 18/11/2006 09:00

DTs started at 4 months, as per advice from HV DT1 took to it straight away, DT2 took a while longer but is now the less fussy eater.

Jelley · 18/11/2006 09:03

17 weeks for dd1 and 2 (now 6 and 7)
24 weeks for ds (now almost 9 months.

Miles easier to wait. Can't imagine how I managed to give a 17 week old baby solid food tbh.
No pureeing this time either!

shazronnie · 18/11/2006 09:06

DS1 (now 3) weaned at 16 wks
DS2 (now 22 mths) weaned at 21 wks, but prob could have waited a couple more weeks TBH.

terramum · 18/11/2006 10:05

DS (now 29 months) started at 29 weeks

geekgrrl · 18/11/2006 10:08

dd1 started at 7.75 months
dd2 at 6 months
ds at 6 months

geekgrrl · 18/11/2006 10:08

(dd1 is 7, dd2 is 5 and ds is 3)

HowTheFillyjonkStoleChristmas · 18/11/2006 10:10

6 months both times

lornaloo · 18/11/2006 10:15

I tried to start weaning when ds was nearly 6months (a week off) but he wasn't ready so I waited untill he was 7months. He didn't really eat very much untill he was about 9months.
I don't think I will start weaning untill 7months with my next as milk seemed to be more than enough for ds untill then.

Flossam · 18/11/2006 10:28

DS was about 21 weeks. Desperately wanted to exclusively BF for 6 months - milk supply ran out (yes really) and by that time, formula milk (to me and yes I was slightly insane) was such the enemy that I thought sod it and started weaning him. DP had to give him the bottle of formula, I was just in floods of tears.

fruitful · 18/11/2006 10:34

dd - 15 weeks (back when advice was 4 months). She was completely not ready for it (I believed the HV who said she was waking in the night cos hungry for more than milk in day)

ds - 7 months (he was 6 weeks prem though); he didn't eat much for a couple of months (about the point when we abandoned the blender and just chucked him bits or our meals)
