Hi Somerset lot - MP etc. Can't remember who else is in Somerset - sorry!

You may remember on a thread (can't remember which one!) recently I mentioned that we will prob relocate to Somerset at some stage - well we now know that it will be in 2 or 3 years and not the 5 years is might have been - YAY!

DS will more than likely go to Taunton School and we are coming over in July for a week for me to get a better idea of areas etc. Although with the property market doing what it is we will not be looking to buy just yet!

What we are looking for is a holiday cottage for a week in July. We stayed in Crowcombe 2 years ago and it was lovely but we had to drive everywhere. We are looking for something on the edge of a nice village where we can walk to a pub that does food etc. Any suggestions?

I have just looked at one in Dinnington that looks nice. Any other nice villages I should check out?

Am off out just now but will check when I get back.

Thank you in advance!!!!

Oh - want something nice so money no object! Within reason!

sounds like you are happy with the future move! I'm from Bristol, and I think Somerset would be a nice place to live.

poshwellies · 28/02/2008 12:19

Off the top of my head..

Kingston St Mary (tiny though but fairly close to Taunton School)
Ilminster and surrounding areas
East Coker and surrounding areas
Stogumber is Pretty (west somerset)

bratnav · 28/02/2008 12:22

Oooh yes Kingston St Mary is lovely, perhaps also slightly further out Nether Stowey?

bratnav · 28/02/2008 12:22

Oooh poshwellies are you in Taunton?

Buda · 29/02/2008 09:20

Thanks for all this!

Yes belgo - I am happy. I know it is a few years away but I feel so much better now that we have a plan!

poshwellies - I have heard Kinston St Mary mentioned before.

Don't suppose you know of any nice holiday cottages?

www.cottageguide.co.uk/westhayesbarn/-Looks nice Buda, its not far from Taunton and surrounding areas,so a good base!

Used to be in Taunton brat ,now residing in Ilminster, are you in Taunton?

TheHonEnid · 29/02/2008 11:20

East coker is lovely but miles from Taunton

belgo · 29/02/2008 11:22

buda - I'm envious - we have no plans to ever leave Belgium and I do wonder how I'll feel in five or ten years time- it would be nice to have the choice of going back to England. But dh really doens't want to, ever.

Desiderata · 29/02/2008 11:25

Another Bristol/North Somerset lass here!

Wiveliscombe's very nice, but it could be a bit far out.

poshwellies · 29/02/2008 11:28

I was thinking of Wivvy Des...Dulverton is fab too-but a bit of a trek to Taunton School.

OrmIrian · 29/02/2008 11:30

Hurray buda!

I second Kingston St Mary. First place we lived when my parents moved us down from Glos back in the 60s. The south side of Taunton is nice there are some lovely villages - Corfe and Staple Fitzpaine. There is some lovely countryside around Wellington - we used to rent a cottage a mile outside the town - so pretty but walkable to shops etc. Nether Stowey? Cannington - a bit bigger.

poshwellies · 29/02/2008 11:33

I didn't think anyone from MN knew zummerzet

OrmIrian · 29/02/2008 11:35

I beleive there is quite a nest of us here poshwellies.

poshwellies · 29/02/2008 11:37

*pours the cider out for all of us

Desiderata · 29/02/2008 11:40
OrmIrian · 29/02/2008 11:43

Sorry. Don't like cider. Can I have some perry instead?

poshwellies · 29/02/2008 11:49

*passes Orm the perry

Buda · 29/02/2008 11:55

poshwellies - that cottage looks great! Thanks.

I think DH only wants to go back for the cider!

He was brought up in Somerset - lived in North Curry first and then Minehead, went to school in Taunton. He left to go to university and then his Dad moved overseas and then Chester. So other than visits he hasn't been back since. But it is the only place in the UK he can see himself living.

Its a lovely place Buda,we are very lucky down here-lovely countryside, close to the coast and not that far from Bristol/Exeter and its only a 2 hr train journey to London.

You'll both love it!

TheHonEnid · 29/02/2008 12:08

god really?

its a bloody long way from a decent city and the countryside isnt all that

ok maybe some it is nice and yes, the coast is lovely

Desiderata · 29/02/2008 12:09

There's no such thing as a decent city.

DumbledoresGirl · 29/02/2008 12:10

Sorry Enid, what does a place have to do to qualify for the "decent city" award? And in what way does Bristol not qualify?

DumbledoresGirl · 29/02/2008 12:11

And the coast is mostly dire - Bristol channel, flat, deadly dull.

TheHonEnid · 29/02/2008 12:11

ok I live 1.5 hours from bristol, a good hour from bath and exeter (and roads are terrible) and 2.5 hours from London

shite

TheHonEnid · 29/02/2008 12:12

'my' coast is the dorset coast
