Hi Somerset lot - MP etc. Can't remember who else is in Somerset - sorry!

You may remember on a thread (can't remember which one!) recently I mentioned that we will prob relocate to Somerset at some stage - well we now know that it will be in 2 or 3 years and not the 5 years is might have been - YAY!

DS will more than likely go to Taunton School and we are coming over in July for a week for me to get a better idea of areas etc. Although with the property market doing what it is we will not be looking to buy just yet!

What we are looking for is a holiday cottage for a week in July. We stayed in Crowcombe 2 years ago and it was lovely but we had to drive everywhere. We are looking for something on the edge of a nice village where we can walk to a pub that does food etc. Any suggestions?

I have just looked at one in Dinnington that looks nice. Any other nice villages I should check out?

Am off out just now but will check when I get back.

Thank you in advance!!!!

Oh - want something nice so money no object! Within reason!

Think this move is going to be great Buda. I am a bit to say the least but really happy for you.

poshwellies · 01/03/2008 18:58

'Tis why we stuck with Ilminster-couldn't afford Lyme or Bridport prices sadly.

MeImAllSmiles · 01/03/2008 19:01

Great for a visit though.

poshwellies · 01/03/2008 19:05

Oops think we hijacked Buda's post

MeImAllSmiles · 01/03/2008 19:07

Could be right there Posh!

flossish · 01/03/2008 19:09

Why does no-one mention Yeovil?? Good shopping, new(ish) cinema, bowlplex. Lovely park for walks. Hoping to build a new swimming pool. More cafes everytime I visit and, and, I come from there and my mum lives there!! What better reason?!!

I like it there.

How about Frome? Not been for years but gather it is quite nice now. Montacute? Nice old house and quaint village. Bradford on avon too far I suppose? Closer then for you to be near Bath/ bristol (can't wait for the new shopping centre, making v good progress now). Are there any nice villages somewhere near bridewater/kilve/minehead way?

poshwellies · 01/03/2008 19:10

I'm sorry, I don't like Yeovil *runs and hides

flossish · 01/03/2008 19:12

but that was because you didn't know I came from there before wasn't it?? No you know that you'll love it of course?

MoosMa · 01/03/2008 19:19

Only just seen this thread and was going to suggest North Curry, lovely food in the pub and several cottages in and around the village. How old is your DH? I wonder if I know him, I've lived here all my life...

MoosMa · 01/03/2008 19:20

Oh, and we got married at Taunton school, it's really lovely isn't it?

poshwellies · 01/03/2008 19:20

Hehe Floss,of course now I know,I simply adore it

poshwellies · 01/03/2008 19:22

Do you have much hassle with the Gipsy site Moos? Always was on the news or in the Gazette, haven't seen much about it now.

Buda · 01/03/2008 20:04

Hi Bree! you are right! Dublin is so such a village - I thought that last week walking down Dunree Park and meeting Mr & Mrs Murphy!!!! We said hello and I though of you!!!!

MoosMa! Wow! DH is 47 if that's any use!!!

expatinscotland · 01/03/2008 20:07

No advice except to say, Wayhey, Buda! Hope you get a lovely home and have a fantastic move!

spudballoo · 01/03/2008 20:14

Oh I'm jealous, I want to move back to Taunton! I did a ttour of Somerset as a child...born in Weston super Mare, then Burnham on Sea, then Yeovil, then Williton (near Minehead) and finally settled in Taunton when I was about 7. I went to Queen's College, but had lots of friends at Taunton School.

My first ever boyfriend lived in Kingston.

The Love of My Life lived in North Curry.

Sob, why am I in London? I want to be in Somerset.

Totally agree that NORTH Som is entirely a different kettle of fish from Real Somerset. My father now lives in N.Som. what a traitor.

x

poshwellies · 01/03/2008 20:19

Wow, there's quite alot of us somersetters now..

booge · 01/03/2008 21:45

Somerset born and bred and I love it still. Near Taunton, Kingston St Mary is OK (The post mistress didn't leave the village for 18 years as she had so much gossip to thrive on). On the Wellington side any where in the Blackdowns is lovely although Wellington it self is worth avoiding, particularly Rockwell Green. Stoke St Gregory is super, North Curry too. Bradford on Tone is for the elderly and any of the villages near the Tone you need to be careful of flooding. If I could live anywhere in Somerset now it would be on the south Mendip slopes within striking distance of Wells (Axbridge,Draycott, Wedmore). Taunton School are you sure? Queens would be our choice.

North Somerset is not so bad and Clevedon is cool, at least we are within striking distance of Bristol.

booge · 01/03/2008 21:47

Strike my comment on Taunton School, I've based my opinion on people I knew 20 years ago, hardly fair.

MoosMa · 01/03/2008 22:26

47, hmm, a little older than me but I may heard of fhim, I'm certainly interested in proving it's small world!

Posh - we don't really have a lot of bother although we live within dog-barking-earshot of them, there's a LOT of rubbish down that road and the odd scraggy dog comes out as we walk past but it's not too bad.

spudballoo - Spill spill, more info of the LoyL please....

spudballoo · 01/03/2008 22:32

Nah, because I know how weeeee NC is and, erm he's still lurking there SHOCK.

Queens is marvellous.

Buda · 02/03/2008 09:52

Sorry - was kicked off computer (again!) by DS. I think we are going to have to buy me a laptop!

MoosMa - looked at your profile - as I think you are 20 years younger than DH and he left NC waaaayy before you were born I wouldn't think you know him!

Bree - I have no idea! I heard he went to the States - whether he is still there I don't know.

booge - thanks for that info - useful - esp about the flooding risks! Why Taunton School? DH went there. He was a scholarship boy. Also he has a colleague whose children go there and they are very happy with it so far. We had a look around last time we were in Somerset and liked what we saw. And coincidentally the children of the owner of the cottage we rented that time went to Taunton and he said they had always been happy with the school.

Expat - thanks! It won't be for about 2 years or so but it does feel good to have a plan.

spudballoo - I don't know - why ARE you in London if you want to be in Somerset??? It is usually something minor like job, money etc!!!!

Dh reckons Taunton school have the worst mini bus, that's how considered our opinion is, our two are still way off school age. Dh went to Queens, DB Kings and I was boarding out of town, I guess it's just old tribal loyalty

cadelaide · 02/03/2008 11:08

I lived in N Curry for a bit, beautiful place.

OrmIrian · 02/03/2008 14:14

I know little about Taunton school apart from an old Tauntonian I work with and he's an arrogant arse (but he was brought up in Bridegy so he may have a bit of a chip ). I went to St Joseph's (when it still existed) an DB went to Kings College.

My DCs got to state primary and DS#1 is off to bog standard comp next year. I don't think my parents have recovered from the horror of it yet
