Hi Somerset lot - MP etc. Can't remember who else is in Somerset - sorry!

You may remember on a thread (can't remember which one!) recently I mentioned that we will prob relocate to Somerset at some stage - well we now know that it will be in 2 or 3 years and not the 5 years is might have been - YAY!

DS will more than likely go to Taunton School and we are coming over in July for a week for me to get a better idea of areas etc. Although with the property market doing what it is we will not be looking to buy just yet!

What we are looking for is a holiday cottage for a week in July. We stayed in Crowcombe 2 years ago and it was lovely but we had to drive everywhere. We are looking for something on the edge of a nice village where we can walk to a pub that does food etc. Any suggestions?

I have just looked at one in Dinnington that looks nice. Any other nice villages I should check out?

Am off out just now but will check when I get back.

Thank you in advance!!!!

Oh - want something nice so money no object! Within reason!

and taunton is utterly depressing

DumbledoresGirl · 29/02/2008 12:13

Ah yes the Dorset coast is very attractive. Not Somerset though....

OrmIrian · 29/02/2008 12:14

I like the Somerset coast. It's not exactly sand and blue sea though I admit. I also like the countryside around it.

TheHonEnid · 29/02/2008 12:14

god no, I agree tis rank

Buda · 29/02/2008 12:16

Enid - you are scaring me! I am not a city person so I suspect Taunton will do for general shopping and Bristol or Bath for extra. MIL is in Chester and my lot are in Dublin so will be visiting both regularly.

Ah, yes! With the exception of Bristol. OK, it's got some rough bits, but where hasn't?

The centre of Bristol is wonderful.

DumbledoresGirl · 29/02/2008 12:17

It nearly chokes me to admit this, as a woman with nearly 50% Cornish blood in her veins, but Devon is an absolutely stunning county and if you found yourself nearish Exeter, I would just abandon Somerset and live in Devon.

Desiderata · 29/02/2008 12:17

.. and they're opening a Harvey Nic's in the autumn

DumbledoresGirl · 29/02/2008 12:17

I thought it was already open Desi?

OrmIrian · 29/02/2008 12:18

I can't beleive you would say that ddg! There is some much beautiful countryside - especially in West Somerset.

But I've been living in this area for years and years. Maybe I just know it really well now.

TheHonEnid · 29/02/2008 12:19

I like bristol

its just too far

poshwellies · 29/02/2008 12:22

Exeter is a quite nice city and the Devon and Dorset coast is stunning

DumbledoresGirl · 29/02/2008 12:23

Sorry OrmIrian, I don't mean to offend. I have been plaguing dh all our married lives to move nearer to my spiritual home (Cornwall). Somerset was my aim for many years (have reached Gloucestershire/Bristol!) but driving down the M5 (and previously the A303) making our many pilgrimages to the centre of the universe (Cornwall) I have reluctantly come to see that only some parts of Somerset really cut it, whereas Devon is stunning.

You anywhere near the Blackdown Hills?

poshwellies · 29/02/2008 12:25

Where have you ACTUALLY been in Somerset Dumble?
...looking at Somerset from the M5/A303 isn't really viewing Somerset at its best!

DumbledoresGirl · 29/02/2008 12:26

Oh I know it quite well, though have never lived there. I grew up in Hampshire with lots of rellies in the south west, also was a student with a car in Bath. I am glad it is still lovely as it pains me to speak well of Devon!

poshwellies · 29/02/2008 12:32

Buda,Taunton is fine for everyday bits of shopping and yeah,it has some shitty areas, but what town hasn't? Bristol/Bath and Exeter are pretty close anyway

TheHonEnid · 29/02/2008 12:33

I am dorset/somerset border

pretty towns, ok countryside, the odd stunning bit spaced well apart

OrmIrian · 29/02/2008 12:34

I bet it must hurt dumble I have a friend who lives just south of Plymouth and she gets really mad if anyone tells her she lives in Devon.

No. I live in Bridgwater (OK not the best bit but I'm fond of it) but I know Quantocks, Brendon hills, Exmoor really well. I also love the Levels but I know it's an aquired taste. Not so keen on East Somerset I suppose. I used to live near the Blackdowns - within walking distance of the monument.

Buda · 29/02/2008 12:34

I figured as much poshwellies. We had a week in Crowcombe 2 years ago and I found Taunton OK. Wouldn't set the world on fire but that's not what I want anyway. And as you say every city has come shitty bits. Actually although Budapest is beautiful the outskirts are VERY shitty.

I used to live in Burnham on Sea...now thats hell on earth

poshwellies · 29/02/2008 12:39

*wonders where Enid actually is

TheHonEnid · 29/02/2008 12:40

quite near you

poshwellies · 29/02/2008 12:42

Thought you maybe Enid

DumbledoresGirl · 29/02/2008 12:56

I turned down the opportunity to live in Clevedon. Does that count as Somerset? Did I do the right thing I wonder?

Desiderata · 29/02/2008 12:59

Yes, you did the right thing, Dumbles.

It's only five miles from me!!
