Not been to that area for 30 years! Having said that, I remember it being beautiful. There is the art deco hotel on Burgh Island which you reach by sea tractor when the tide's in

All beaches are lovely there. We used to stay at Challaborough. Here are some views:

Nice restaurants abound in Dartmouth. The new Angel is rather fab, and on the waterfront. The George in Blackawton is an excellent pub. Oh, and the Pig Finca Cafe in Kingsbridge is really cool (and child friendly).

Beaches - Slapton Sands is probably your best bet.

We'll be in Blackawton in June, so if you see someone carrying a MN shopping list bag, it might well be me!

We're off to East Prawle in June !!

Pennywell Farm is brilliant - I'll link ...

Oooh - we'll all be meandering around spotting MN merchandise - right - I'll be on Slapton Sands - the memorial end - on June 12th - You'll have to sidle up and say - "Is that you yeahinaminuite"!! - to which I'll reply "Bless my fanjo"

PestoMonster · 16/04/2007 14:02

Oh, and go to Burgh Island off Bigbury Bay too. You can walk to it (there is the Pilchard Inn when you get there) at low tide. At high tide you travel on a sea tractor! Bigbury bay is very good for rockpools and lovely sandy beach too.

ArcticRoll · 16/04/2007 14:27

Blackpool Sands-lovely beach.
Boat trip to Dartmouth castle
The New Angel in Dartmouth would be lovely place for romantic meal.

ekra · 16/04/2007 14:36

Pennywell farm. We took DD there for the day when we camped near Dartmouth. It's a really nice farm/park.

anteater · 16/04/2007 14:37

our kids loved the zoo
independant on Sat (7/4/07)had a thing about the River Dart.

anteater · 16/04/2007 14:41

Oh and Hope Cove is GREAT for children

gess · 16/04/2007 14:54

challaborough parking is fine. Very narrow country lanes.

We tend to go to Bigbury because we can get free parking - do be careful of cars driving over to burgh island though.

The beach after Bigbury (opposite direction to challaborough) is lovely. Easy parking. Can't think what its called! Just past Aveton Gifford.

Salcombe is lovely to walk through. I'm always a fan of Totnes as well. There's Woodlands big family theme park type thing out near Dartmouth -although I've never been.

Dart valley railway at Buckfastleigh.

FrozenSandwichShortofapicnic · 16/04/2007 15:15

Oh and Sharpham Vineyards do wine and cheese tasting!

Cocobabe · 16/04/2007 15:26

wow , all of your tips sounds great ! , my dd will love the farm ! ...already looking forward to checking out the beaches !- hope weather is good ! my mum is a shopacholic for unique, independant/crafty type shops ...any places have those kind of sweet non chain shops worth checking out ?

FrozenSandwichShortofapicnic · 16/04/2007 15:29

gess · 16/04/2007 15:36

Totnes for your mum's shopping needs.

Helennn · 16/04/2007 15:43

Cocobabe, could you link to where you are staying? Just a friend of my dh's has some really nice holiday letting accommodation in Moreleigh, wonder if it is theirs?

Cocobabe · 16/04/2007 16:02

As well as pennywell you could try Woodlands Leisure Park at Blackawton.
Salcombe has LOADS to do for kids - take a ferry across the estuary to East Portlemouth beaches, crabcatching along Victoria quay, hire a boat, take a trip out to sea in an old lifeboat or just bring a bucket and spade and dig sand!
When in June are you going? The Salcombe festival is 9/10 June and there's usually lots to see and do then.
Unfortunately Sorley tunnel has closed down - even tho it is still advertised in quite a few brochures.
And no - I don't work in the tourist information centre - I just live here!!!!
