There are various independent shops at Trago Mills on the A38, as well as a big Cash and Carry place & a lot of activities - but be warned - the owner is very independent minded & has his own way of doing things - in the past he has refused to accept credit cards unless you get them separately 'validated' first, and he is very anti-metric - I haven't been there for a while, so he may have a new bee in his bonnet by now.

Bovey Tracy is nice - there's the Devon Guild of Craftsmen gallery and there's a lovely restaurant whose name escapes me for the moment - I'll have to ask my Dad - he lives in Chillington.
Also off the A38 near Bovey is House of Marbles , with glass blowing and marble/craft/gift shop - you do have to watch little ones near the glass, but they have the most amazing marble runs, including one which spans the whole stairwell - you can watch it for hours....

gess · 16/04/2007 16:47

ds2 is begging me to take him to the marble factory as he calls it this weekend. The cafe there is pretty good as well, although busy on a Sunday.

gess · 16/04/2007 16:47

oh and the National marine aquarium in Plymouth.

RustyBear · 16/04/2007 16:47

Gess - do you mean Thurlestone?

Cocobabe · 16/04/2007 16:54

anteater - where's Hope Cove ?

Helennn · 16/04/2007 16:58

Cocobabe, YES, it is the one owned by my dh's friends, (I don't know them so well but used to be good friends with his daughter who sadly died in her early twenties, .) My dh regularly plays snooker there in the winter as the owner, (Dennis, and Gill) organises the local snooker team - he is quite a character! I haven't seen the accomm. but it does look Gorgeous in the pics!!!! I'm sure you will have a fab. time.

Otisspunkmeyer, my mil lives in Blackawton so I'll have my detective glasses on watching out for you, .

Rustybear - dare I ask where your dad lives? (might be very near to me).

Nicjane - won't ask who you are as I don't want you to ask who I am, iyswim, .

RustyBear · 16/04/2007 17:02

Dad is in Green Park Way Helennn - is that near you?

Cocobabe · 16/04/2007 17:03

Helenn - What's Moreleigh like ? Is there a pub in the village ?( DH wants to know !)
Sorry to hear abt yr friend
My dd is looking fwd to sleeping in the pirate bed !

Helennn · 16/04/2007 17:03

Oh no, Rustybear, that is other side of main road to me, would take me all of 5 mins. to walk there!!!

RustyBear · 16/04/2007 17:06

We used to stay at Fairfield Guest House, now an old people's home - back in the days when Fairfield Farm was still there & the old bakery still baked bread. Mum & Dad retired there & Dad is still there on his own, though he's 97 now.

Helennn · 16/04/2007 17:11

Moreleigh is quite a quiet rural village as far as I know. Yes, it definitely has a pub, quite a spit and sawdust type, landlady looks like she's just got off her horse before coming to serve last time I went there. They are well known for their steaks and open fires, (maybe not in June!). Would be a bit of a walk with kids back home afterwards though.

Photo of snooker room, (one with the full size table in it), reminded me of the time we had a party in there, it was the only time in my life I got incredibly drunk, was sick down the side of a blokes car and ended up sleeping on the floor as the owners said daughter had pinched my sleeping bag. I was still feeling sick the next day at 5 O'clock, too bad to drive home!! Funnily enough it put me off getting that drunk ever again!!!!!!

Helennn · 16/04/2007 17:19

Rustybear - maybe I should say I live at Fairfield Farm then, it probably is/was!! Sounds better than what it is now.

Yeah/Otis/Coco - I am away myself early June else we could have had a meet-up on the beach having to use mumsnet only words to find each other - mine could have been, "any-one seen my moon-cup?"

Helennn · 16/04/2007 17:23

Sorry, me again!!! Went to \link{http://www.southdevonrailway.org/News-and-Press-Releases/TotnesRB.html\here last week. Never knew it was there until recently, it would be ideal for little ones, maybe combined with a trip on the steam train, then into the butterfly farm/otter sanctuary at Buckfastleigh. It is very un-commercialised and my two loved it.

Hope link works!

Cocobabe · 16/04/2007 17:31

DH will be pleased to hear about the steaks !
LOL abt yr drunk incident !

HIya, I live in the southt hams, and just wanted to say hi tho you ladies who also live here, there is life south of the A38 then!!

Woodlands is the best, but obv it will be packed.

Try Blackpool sand, and the pub in Torcross for mega fish and chips.

Hope Cove, and my fave beach is Bantham.

Pig finca is cool, a member of my family chefs there !

Cocobabe · 16/04/2007 17:59

pirategirl - wots the parking like at Bantham /Hopecove ?

OP posts:
gess · 16/04/2007 18:50

bantham- that's the beach I was talking about earlier. Lovely beach, very easy parking, but a bit pricey. Toilets, but no cafe.

NicJane · 16/04/2007 20:32

I agree about Pig Finca!
And I had a really yummy steak in Moreleigh recently!

Beauregard · 16/04/2007 20:43

What date in June are you going coco?

We are staying at california cross nr Modbury.
I love the south Hams, with regard to places to visit,Pennywell is good and also Sorley tunnel just outside Kingsbridge (a full day out)
Blackpool sands is fab and well worth the fiver the money they charge to park, clean loo's ,showers and a cafe etc.
Totnes is a lovely old hippyish place for shopping.
Dartmouth has lots of foody shopsone of my personal favourites.
Painton zoo is always a good bet too.
This year we will be visiting Babacoombe model village, woodlands and the sealife place in Torquay and will be going to Brixham for a nosy around,we went once pre kids and loved it.
