Cottage wanted to hold sedate Wedding BBQ/chilled reception - Devon/Cornwal 1( week)

I am looking for a remote/secluded cottage with large garden/fields/land to be able to hold a quiet reception in the area of Tavistock/Devon - Liskeard/Cornwall area, will consider anything around these areas, including plymouth outskirts.

I am getting married in Cornwalland woud like to have the reception at the cottage. Nothing grand, just 40 people or so (made up of lots of children), some music (no heavy bands - friends jamming guitars that kind of thing, BBQ, permission for a small marquee in case it rains. Once everyone leaves, we will spend a few days chilling with our little one, and possible have family from USA come and visit for dinner one or two days

No people will be staying over, unless this is permitted (ie camping - and only one or two if permitted).
A coach/minibus will be provided to transport guests home, so ideally space to park cars and collect the next day

My wedding is on Friday 21st September 2007, and ideally we would like to take the cottage from the Wednesday 19th Sept through to the following wednesday, or even the friday, however will consider two weeks if only do weekend blocks.

I will ensure that the gathering does not extend into the cottage (we can hire toilets if required), all mess will be cleared up, no open fires on the ground, no loud noise late into the night, damamge will be paid for (although no damage is anticipated, as not that kind of party). It is to be a chilled, fun evening for friends to gather and celebtrate our commitment. We will be happy to pay a damage deposit.

Oh that sounds nice!

Lovely idea - I live in Cornwall but right at the other end!! So don't know any to recommend personally but just wondered if you had looked at The Landmark Trust / National Trust/ English Heritage - all three have really amazing and often unusual properties and cottages to rent for holidays. Might be worth a look?

Helpful HOlidays is a great company with really fab staff who could probably help you. THey have a website. Google them.

Bucketsofdynomite · 09/04/2007 19:01

How about this?

Weddingheadache · 09/04/2007 20:25

Bucket - wow thats fantastic! Unfortunately its too big and too far west .

We are looking for something that sleeps up to 4-6 ideally, as after the reception and once we have got rid of everyone we want some peace and quiet, and a cosy location!

Looking for around £300-400 per week or so. We don't mind if the owners property is close by, if they are fine with us having the gathering.

Aloha - I came across Helpful Holidays actually, did not see much, however I shall call them directly and see if they can help me if I explain what I am looking for. Many thanks for letting me know about them.

I have found two potential places but owners are close and I am not sure if they will be amicable to a gathering, I have emailed and we shall see what they say.

I am sure that the number of 40 will reduce quite quickly too as many people have children and will want to get home at a reasonable hour.

Still, any more suggestions greatfully received

oh and dont mind paying a little extra for the one night of the reception if required.

Seaside - National Trust is actually quite expensive. Seen one great one with meadows, but in chagford itself and quite a way from where we are getting married/where people will be travelling back to

Weddingheadache, I work for cottages4you and we do occasionally have people ring asking for just this kind of thing. Usually they have a property in mind so we will ring the owner and run it by them - some say yes, some say no, it's always worth asking though, and offering a hefty security deposit.

21st Sept is relatively late in the year; lots of properties are booked already but as the number of people staying is not that big it increases your options.

Wrong part of Cornwall and bigger than you need but 11 acres, ample parking etc and available for the weeks either side of your date - £1100 for a week.

Website is running slow so no more suggestions just now but there are 297 properties available atm from Sat 21/9 (some not available previous week though ) - have a look

JanH · 09/04/2007 20:47

ll, we have had people reserving properties for Christmas 2008 for months! (But still quite a bit left for 2007 - get in quick )

compo · 09/04/2007 20:48

ooh Jan I never knew that's what you did. I've spent many a happy holiday in a cottage4you place and have recommended it to all my friends - brill customer service

Isn't 21st Sep low season then if it's termtime?

prufrock · 09/04/2007 20:54

I know of a place in Gorran Haven which sounds perfect - is that any where near?

How about this one, wh? Big garden, right location I think, £1200 for 2 weeks from 14/9.

If any of these look OK to you I would go through the website and draw up a shortlist, then ring up and we can ring the owners one by one

OMG i lurve the yurt! I am absolutely for it. I have just shown DP and he is not impressed . Its fab, so are the cottages. But alas, just a little to far out for us. Only a touch, but transport is taking people back to Plymouth, so I would prefer it the other side of Dobwalls, ideally. However, it is here in my favs now. I will call at least and see if they can accommodate.
Thanks for the spanner in the works, I dont want a reception now I want the Yurt of LURVE!

Jan - yes afraid its a tad too pricey. Depends on the dates but if we can get a tues/wed booking start date, we can do around £600, if not will need two weeks so bit cheaper really. Can do biggish damage deposit as we and friends are good well behaved campers used to dartmoor and always leave it unspoiled when we go.
