Cottage wanted to hold sedate Wedding BBQ/chilled reception - Devon/Cornwal 1( week)

I am looking for a remote/secluded cottage with large garden/fields/land to be able to hold a quiet reception in the area of Tavistock/Devon - Liskeard/Cornwall area, will consider anything around these areas, including plymouth outskirts.

I am getting married in Cornwalland woud like to have the reception at the cottage. Nothing grand, just 40 people or so (made up of lots of children), some music (no heavy bands - friends jamming guitars that kind of thing, BBQ, permission for a small marquee in case it rains. Once everyone leaves, we will spend a few days chilling with our little one, and possible have family from USA come and visit for dinner one or two days

No people will be staying over, unless this is permitted (ie camping - and only one or two if permitted).
A coach/minibus will be provided to transport guests home, so ideally space to park cars and collect the next day

My wedding is on Friday 21st September 2007, and ideally we would like to take the cottage from the Wednesday 19th Sept through to the following wednesday, or even the friday, however will consider two weeks if only do weekend blocks.

I will ensure that the gathering does not extend into the cottage (we can hire toilets if required), all mess will be cleared up, no open fires on the ground, no loud noise late into the night, damamge will be paid for (although no damage is anticipated, as not that kind of party). It is to be a chilled, fun evening for friends to gather and celebtrate our commitment. We will be happy to pay a damage deposit.

Bucket - I like that, added to shortlist, might be pricey but worth looking into.

N of Liskeard in 2-acre grounds shared with owner - about £800 for the 2 weeks.

(If you can find one that does short breaks, as this one does, you could book Mon-Fri and then the following week, which would save you a little (about 25-30% of one week's charge)

Gorran havan too far? Shame.
I am looking for somewhere near (ish) Dobwalls area. Am getting married at Carnglaze caverns.

JanH - your advice is great, will keep trying too, I am hoping to get somewhere, I am getting all excited with pictures in my head of how it might be. For the firs time in ages. I have been fretting lots over where we would have reception as I cant really do formal sit down dinners, this idea is perfect.

Ooh I hope I find somewhere!

Oooh, ll's looks good and he prefers Wed-Wed as well!

Weddingheadache · 09/04/2007 21:18

Littlelapin. How did you find this. It is just perfect Oh I love it love it love it.

However, perfect, not quite. Two small problems, well not small at all

  1. It has no double bed. As it is our wedding/honeymoon, creates a problem. However, in itself, might have a solution, if we put our minds to it
  2. The big problem. Heather one of the owners is very poorly. Therefore they are not renting it in advance this year. They might be able to accommodate if we call a couple of weeks in advance. I might call him and ask, but dont want to put my foot in it...
Oh Damnations!!! >

Littlelapin - yes best to avoid the other link. Got a little heated for my liking. A bit sensitive I guess.

This is a great option, but left it too late I think . Went to a friends BBQ, big garden and just thought, this is what we want, nothing big and hectic, and I have contacts, so perhaps I should try to use them...

I noticed that, Wh - maybe instead of calling you could email?

It's a bit worrying that the note about Heather went in in January and there is no update since, but OTOH there is a booking for a week in June...

Weddingheadache · 09/04/2007 21:35

JanH - good idea about the email.

The one in St Cleer looks ideal in terms of location and price. However it is a shared garden, would the owner be up for a gathering do you think?
I shall look into it...its on my favs too!

guys, dont know where you find some of the sites, I been looking for ages! Some wonderful places keep em coming!
Littlelapin - I just love the one in Bere Alston. The guy is doing renovations, am hoping one of them might be installing a double bed!!! hehe!
I would be happy to spend a day or two working on the grounds!
Oh, I shall email and see if I can arrange something with him...
And JanH - the one near St Neot also sounds great, if the owner is happy to allow a few people there for an evening! I shall enquire asap,

Typically, I am at work next two days, for the first time in about a year so wont have time, but Thursday morning I shall make some calls.
I am off to prepare my suit etc for work tomorrow and get an early night.

Thanks for everyones help, its been great. I feel excited.
Keep the cottages coming tho!!!

Littlelapin! Great! Now my DP is wetting himself! He likes this much better than a yurt!
The other day ivewe went to Exmouth, and they have a carriage restuarant, and he said to me 'I reckon we should buy a train and do it up and live in it'!!!!!!! You are a little gem hun!!!

JanH · 09/04/2007 21:52

RE the St Cleer one, all you can do is ask - it is attached to the owner's house, which might be a prob, but then again they might be madly sociable, let you go ahead and even join in - can't tell without asking

Weddingheadache · 09/04/2007 21:53

Sorts out the double bed problem doesn't it?!! . AND it will be memorable!
I am going to call the cottage/house and see if I can get somewhere, and maybe we will stay in the carriage for honeymoon night, let some family members stay in the house with our DD!

JanH - thats what I am thinking. I know a friend who holds a party each year in a disused/converted barn, and the owners have no problems with the noise, as far as he is concerned its what the money pays for, he even provides lights and lets people use his outside toilet! this children run around in the day playing rounders and getting their faces painted So we thought that others may feel the same!

littlelapin - you may wish you never offered that service!!
Cake - easy. Chocolate bottom (largest, for me) and carrot cake top. All covered in white chocolate!
I dont know anyone who likes fruit cake...

Still haven't got me dress yet tho...

Really, I must go to bed. I am dreading tomorrow already, best way to calm nerves is to sleep...
Night all, thanks for help. I will keep you all posted and get more suggestions if the ones I get dont work out. Await with bated breath...

Goodnight, Wh - sweet dreams - you will have a fab wedding one way or another

JanH · 09/04/2007 22:52

Have just found one more possible for you to look at when you come back - this one's just in Devon , near Yelverton, 9 miles from both Tavistock & Plymouth. Just under £800 for 11 nights, about £900 for 2 weeks.

Garden is a bit slopey for a marquee by the looks, but it seems to be out on its own.
