Cottage wanted to hold sedate Wedding BBQ/chilled reception - Devon/Cornwal 1( week)

I am looking for a remote/secluded cottage with large garden/fields/land to be able to hold a quiet reception in the area of Tavistock/Devon - Liskeard/Cornwall area, will consider anything around these areas, including plymouth outskirts.

I am getting married in Cornwalland woud like to have the reception at the cottage. Nothing grand, just 40 people or so (made up of lots of children), some music (no heavy bands - friends jamming guitars that kind of thing, BBQ, permission for a small marquee in case it rains. Once everyone leaves, we will spend a few days chilling with our little one, and possible have family from USA come and visit for dinner one or two days

No people will be staying over, unless this is permitted (ie camping - and only one or two if permitted).
A coach/minibus will be provided to transport guests home, so ideally space to park cars and collect the next day

My wedding is on Friday 21st September 2007, and ideally we would like to take the cottage from the Wednesday 19th Sept through to the following wednesday, or even the friday, however will consider two weeks if only do weekend blocks.

I will ensure that the gathering does not extend into the cottage (we can hire toilets if required), all mess will be cleared up, no open fires on the ground, no loud noise late into the night, damamge will be paid for (although no damage is anticipated, as not that kind of party). It is to be a chilled, fun evening for friends to gather and celebtrate our commitment. We will be happy to pay a damage deposit.

Wh might love it, not sure about her DH-to-be

gess · 09/04/2007 23:25

If you're still into yurts... we've stayed here . It's near Bodmin, so wrong bit of Cornwall, but the owner is very helpful, loads of space, and secluded.

gess · 09/04/2007 23:27

if you stay in the Mitlon Combe one you could ask about hiring the barn at Buckland Abbey for the reception. We looked into that (before booking Kitley). It was no good for us becuase during the summer season we couldn't get access until 7pm, but they allowed earlier access out of the summer.

gess · 09/04/2007 23:30

here's Bucklamd Abbey .

You could always talk to the Who'd A Thought It as well.

Hmm will ponder some more.

gess · 09/04/2007 23:32

Oh my goodness my children would love staying in that railways carriage!

JanH · 09/04/2007 23:33

Did you see the telly though, gess? (Meant to mention this when you linked, ll!) Pure 1960s with those skinny slanted metal legs

gess · 09/04/2007 23:35

I know, and the carpet

gess · 10/04/2007 07:37

or you oculd get cottage and hire a yurt for the reception rather than a marquee. One of the ones listed on that website holds 45. They're stunningly beautiful as well.

Littlelapin good evening! Thanks for offer of cake but that is being sorted by my best friend, who is going to be holding some tasting parties very soon...so she says!!! But thanks, in case her cooking has gone to the wall I shall keep your offer in mind!

I still love the yurt! DP loves it too, but not for a wedding he said we can go there next year for holiday tho!

JanH · 10/04/2007 21:51

Pavlov, are you Wh?

Did you see the Yelverton cottage I posted last night?

PavlovtheCat · 10/04/2007 21:53

Gess - any ideas of prices for buckland abbey?

PavlovtheCat · 10/04/2007 21:54

LOL dorry did not change my name back! oops hehe! Yes it is me, sorry for confusion, was trying to keep wedding me seperate from normal me!
I am looking at it now!

PavlovtheCat · 10/04/2007 21:59

JanH, the one in Milton Combe looks good too. How do you do the 11 days, it says the 2 or three day break has to be taken Fri or Sat, and the 7 days break also is Sat...so they cross over?
I will send them an email and see if they will do party.

Buckland Abbey, great as it may be, will be a bit too costly for us if we spend £800 on cottage too (I cant seem to get price but if cotehele anything to go by it will be £1000!).

We were not going to have a honeymoon straight away initially but thought that with the reception in same location we can kill two birds with one stone so to speak...

PavlovtheCat · 10/04/2007 22:25

ok, I found
this

With the large house in Bere Alston in mind. Am awaiting response from email...

PavlovtheCat · 10/04/2007 22:25

I am now thinking laterally here...

JanH · 10/04/2007 22:53

Pavlov, the 11 days was 4 nights from from Mon 17/9 and then 7 nights from Fri 21/9.

As your wedding is on the Fri 21/9 you need to be in there before, and going from Mon 17/9 is the only way with one of these.

Complicated!

If you do ring C4U about any of these, make sure you stress all your points eg about your hygienic camping habits and that nobody will be staying over, etc etc, so that the person you speak to can be sure to relay them to the owner

gess · 10/04/2007 22:58

I still think cottage plus wedding yurt (for 45 people( is the way to go.

Seriously ds1 (who never stops, is never still) came intp the yurt and sat down and was peaceful. It was lovely. And the guy who runs yurtworks is lovely too. Special places.

YEAH!!!! I got one!
how about this!

I spent a request, they called back today, have spoken to the owner, who has agreed to us having our reception there. I beleive she is the one cat owner next door. She can come along for adrink if she wants!

The only snag is that the condition is that we book it for two hol weeks, but as it is £730 for both weeks, I think this is very reasonable for what we are getting - there is a water bed there, and woodburners and a conservatory.

Of course I have not yet said I agree to this, I might yet try to wangle a couple of days reduced rate on basis of being honeymoon and that it does not appear to be booked up at all this year! As DP said, we shall play hard ball, but not too hard!

We are going to call tomorrow and see if we can go visit it, make sure it meets our needs, if not we shall go anyway at least see the outside, and check out local parking facilities etc.

However, its ours! Reserved for two weeks to confirm!

Thanks so much people for your help, I will no doubt have many other wedding threads as the weeks go on.

Keep ideas coming if you have any wonderful genuis ideas that we have not covered so far that might blow this right out of the water, but if not then YEY

Littlelapin - I shall be following you now for wedding suggestions, there will be no escaping. .

Oh, and the one with the poorly wife, she has terminal cancer. I sent an email, and got a loverly one back about his own honeymoon, and how he bought the farm 40 years ago before his marriage. It made me teary. I sent one back wishing him and family positive thoughts.

So...now I have to organise a marquee (still might be a yurt ), tables, chairs, throws, BBQs, things for kids to do, wedding dress, coaches, cars...

PavlovtheCat · 11/04/2007 21:15

I forgot to add....the cottage is a stones throw (if you are strong) from Carnglaze caverns!

Bucketsofdynomite · 12/04/2007 09:37

Wow, that is spot on to your requirements isn't it? Hope everything else goes that well!
Plus that conservatory/greenhouse is an added bonus if it rains, people aren't all crammed in the yurt (it will be a yurt of course.)

PavlovtheCat · 12/04/2007 12:06

Smoothly? I have just had an almighty row with DP about his lack of input/enthusiasm/effort. He spends all his time on Championship bloody Manager, whilst I am trying to sort out wedding. This morning, I put up some sites for hiring of tables/chairs and he closed it down to check Sports News! Completely Obslivious, so I got upset...oh dear....they say weddings are stressful!
Anyway, I am steaming ahead, got a marquee sorted, even better than the usual ones, as the sides can be rolled up or down depending on weather, and my bridesmaid and I will decorate the poles with flowers and ribbons. It is a friend of a friends and will hopefully be either lent to us, or hired out cheap as chips!!!
Also got three BBQs sorted, and two of those portable fire heaters with the mesh covers, safe, leaves no mess, and being borrowed from friends too!
I am now not giving my friends a chance to be uninterested, I am involving them whether they like it or not! hehehe

what fun!

p.s. don't barbecue IN the marquee or all your guests will die from toxic fumes - but I assume you know that already
