Horsey films/TV recommendations

My daughter and I love watching horsey films and I'm after some recommendations after we watched a real stinker yesterday ("Horse Camp" on Prime Grin ).

So far we absolutely loved:

"Sunday Horse"

"Heartland"

"Walk Ride Rodeo"

We have also seen all of "Free Rein".

Does anyone have any other horsey movie or TV show recommendations?

National velvet

Missey85 · 02/01/2022 10:26

Ride like a girl is a movie about the first women to win the Melbourne Cup

Missey85 · 02/01/2022 10:37

Has your DD seen the silver brumby movies? She might like that their a book series too

MyAnacondaMight · 02/01/2022 10:41

National and International Velvet!

Riders probably isn’t mother/daughter viewing…

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/01/2022 10:42

Have you watched the newer Black Beauty (think it's Netflix). We really enjoyed it

liveforsummer · 02/01/2022 10:44

How old is dd? We recently watched war horse but it's a bit traumatic

liveforsummer · 02/01/2022 10:45

Also the black stallion - fave movie of my childhood

Godzillaandgodzuki · 02/01/2022 10:48

Dream Horse is really lovely, I won't say anymore in case you don't know the true story behind it, also second Ride like a girl.

fucketyfuckwit · 02/01/2022 10:52

Definitely international velvet!! One of my all time favourites! Makes me cry.

Tempusfudgeit · 02/01/2022 10:52

The Horse Whisperer. Beautiful and traumatising!

liveforsummer · 02/01/2022 10:54

I've struggled to find National and international velvet on any free steaming services. We're yet to see those

Gotthetshirt23 · 02/01/2022 11:16

International Velvet
The Black Stallion (all of them)

Childhood favourites
Bought on DVD - eBay

liveforsummer · 02/01/2022 11:20

Ah I don't have a DVD player so that one not an option unfortunately

wowseroonie · 02/01/2022 11:21

Seabiscuit

snowqu33n · 02/01/2022 11:48

Don’t know if you’ll find it but Flambards. The books are also good.

XelaM · 02/01/2022 11:50

Thank you so much for all the recommendations! We will definitely have a look. My daughter is nearly 12, but we love the more serious and realistic films rather than just kids' fairy tale-type films. My daughter actually read "War Horse". It's one of her favourite books and we have seen the play (which is amazing but I cried Blush). We haven't yet seen the film.

Haven't seen any of the films recommended on this thread yet, so really looking forward to the horsey movie-marathon.

I actually forgot to mention that we have recently seen "Moondance Alexander" (free on Prime). It's also a nice mother/daughter horse film based on real events.

I also would suggest International Velvet. With Christopher Plummer. [swoon]

I was determined to be an Olympic Eventer on the back of that film. (Sadly smashed up my pelvis while trying out an ex racehorse aged 19).

Still an absolute favourite. :)

XelaM · 02/01/2022 12:35

@IcedCoffeeMilkshake Ohh so sorry to hear that! It's actually my daughter's dream to be an Olympic eventer! Not my dream... 😬

OP posts:
IcedCoffeeMilkshake · 02/01/2022 12:36

That is a noble and inspiring dream. :) I wish her the very best of luck. What wonderful years she has ahead!

(As a mother now though I understand how scary it is to watch!)

XelaM · 02/01/2022 12:37

I think all parents prefer dressage Grin

IcedCoffeeMilkshake · 02/01/2022 12:38

Grin! yes!

I recall my dad standing over me in A&E and saying; 'It'll be showing ponies in hand now right?'

AnnaMagnani · 02/01/2022 12:40

Seabiscuit

Black Beauty 1994 film with Sean Bean.

XelaM · 02/01/2022 13:02

@IcedCoffeeMilkshake Oh God, every parent's worst nightmare! So sorry

On a similar subject I can highly recommend "Sunday Horse" (although I don't want to give much away in case people don't know the real story). It's very good, but about show jumping rather than eventing. It's based on real events and the film follows the real events pretty closely.

Thank you everyone for all the other recommendations! We will start watching tonight and I will report back Xmas Smile

My dd is a really irritating watching companion when there’s anything horsey on TV (unless it’s eventing/SJ coverage). She gets too annoyed about all the things they get wrong 🤨

However, we did both enjoy Seabiscuit - partly because neither of us knows much about racing plus the period setting meant that if there were factual errors she didn’t pick them up!

I couldn’t bear to watch my dd go round XC at her first event but I’ve come to terms with it now. It’s lovely to see how much joy both she and her horse get going round a XC course. I do still get a bit nervous every time she goes up a level though 😬

Maybe give Never-ending Story a miss 😱
