Horsey films/TV recommendations

My daughter and I love watching horsey films and I'm after some recommendations after we watched a real stinker yesterday ("Horse Camp" on Prime Grin ).

So far we absolutely loved:

"Sunday Horse"

"Heartland"

"Walk Ride Rodeo"

We have also seen all of "Free Rein".

Does anyone have any other horsey movie or TV show recommendations?

50-1 on Prime is pretty good - it's about Mine that Bird and it's a great story. Not sure if it's suitable for a 12yo - it's been a bit since I watched it.

@Pleasedontdothat I can soo understand your daughter! I'm the same about any figure skating-related films Grin I can't bear to watch them, as they're never realistic. (I'm a massive figure skating fan ⛸ Blush ). And good luck to your daughter with XC! I absolutely have to watch to my eyes closed at times

That's what I liked about heartland - as someone with a decent amount of veterinary knowledge it's was quite accurate compared to a lot of things. I even learned some stuff. I'm not sure how realistic the training of the wild mustangs were though as I've never tried, and why do they alway get so badly hurt from small tumbles 😆

Free Rein.

A Horse for Alex.

Definitely International Velvet! The stuff of dreams and one of my all time favourites. Lost count of how many times I watched it as a child but sadly I never made it to the Olympics either (another broken pelvis...!). I had to get it on DVD but I see someone else has mentioned that it's on youtube now.

Black Beauty is great too.

Not films, but we've discovered lots of good horsey vlog channels on You Tube eg www.youtube.com/channel/UCujQqetXimfO4rw9R9TtRcg
& www.youtube.com/channel/UC8XHNg-pCOSSQI8ad5YgU0g - watch out for Harry, he is hilarious.

Found it thanks, and free too. Shame we can watch the original first but this will do and be tonight's viewing Grin

Not a film or series but a YouTube channel which is about Friesian horses. Its Dutch and absolutely beautiful. The main horse lost her foal and they pair her with an orphan foal. The series follows their journey and it is fantastic. The vlogger Yvonne explains why they do whatever they are doing and the care these horses get is amazing. It's called 'Fresian horses: Follow The Herd'

AnnaMagnani · 02/01/2022 13:48

OMG I love that Youtube channel!

Rubytinsleslippers · 02/01/2022 13:51

@AnnaMagnani It is fantastic!! I know nothing about horses but feel part of the family!!

AnnaMagnani · 02/01/2022 13:52

The amount she tells you about horse behaviour is brilliant.

liveforsummer · 02/01/2022 13:54

Sounds better than the stuff younger dd watches on YouTube - not sure how much more Harlow and popcorn I can take Confused

The documentary about a racehorse called Dream Alliance is on Netflix which is good watching, can’t for the life of me think what it’s called; dark horse maybe?

Tronkmanton · 02/01/2022 19:40

It’s very old but I loved watching Champions when I was 12! Unfortunately it started a life long ginger horse buying habit though so be warned Smile

powershowerforanhour · 02/01/2022 19:40

Phar Lap is good but- spoiler alert- it spans his whole career so hankies at the ready.

Leftbutcameback · 02/01/2022 19:43

Might be too old for your daughter but I watch McClouds Daughters (I think it’s called it) - series set on an Aussie cattle ranch

Knowivedonewrong · 02/01/2022 20:27

The Adventures of Black Beauty, the 70's series.
Black Beauty film with Sean Bean.

Riverlee · 02/01/2022 20:34

‘Champions’ about the true story of Bob Champion and is fight against cancer. It’s a long, long time since I’ve seen it, so don’t know age rating it is, and how much horse riding there is in it.

National Velvet
International Velvet
Horse Whisperer

  • first three films I thought of also.
RussiasGreatestLoveMachine · 02/01/2022 20:35

Blatant place-marking.

Riverlee · 02/01/2022 20:36

Racing Stripes - actually about a zebra who thought he was a racehorse.

racing stripes

CovidCorvid · 02/01/2022 20:38

The Black Stallion movie

Riverlee · 02/01/2022 20:39

Horse boy

Not watched the film, but read the book about das and his autistic son, who had a connection with horses, and their journey across Russia meeting the horsemen. Based on a true story (loved the book).

White Horses

Found myself singing ‘Snowy white horses’ theme song, and just looked it up. The series is about a girl and horses.
