Horsey films/TV recommendations

My daughter and I love watching horsey films and I'm after some recommendations after we watched a real stinker yesterday ("Horse Camp" on Prime Grin ).

So far we absolutely loved:

"Sunday Horse"

"Heartland"

"Walk Ride Rodeo"

We have also seen all of "Free Rein".

Does anyone have any other horsey movie or TV show recommendations?

Netflix - Dark Horse. It is based on the story behind racehorse 'Dream Alliance'.

TrainspottingWelsh · 02/01/2022 20:46

Spirit. I know it's a kids cartoon with an unrealistic ending, but far more realistic history and horse wise than most adult films.

XelaM · 02/01/2022 21:47

@Riverlee We have seen "Racing Stripes". Loved it. It was so cute! I forgot to mention it on my OP. We also watched the TV series "Wildfire" about racing. It's similar to "Heartland" but slightly less realistic.

Just to say thank you for recommending "International Velvet". That's what we watched tonight and absolutely loved it!! Young Antony Hopkins as the coach is brilliant and very similar in his style and manner to my daughter's coach Grin whom she loves. He even looks a bit like him!

We intend to go through all the films on this thread

Dream horse was good when I saw it in the cinema recently.

HandbagAddiction · 02/01/2022 22:19

Add ‘Secretariat’ to your list. Brilliant film based upon true events and a phenomenal racehorse!

There’s also ‘The Mustang’ on Netflix. About prisoners training Mustangs. It’s a 15 but is fantastic if you think your daughter is old enough.

HandbagAddiction · 02/01/2022 22:21

Also ‘Flicka’. Can’t remember seeing this one myself - or if I have, I can’t remember it!

liveforsummer · 02/01/2022 22:22

We've just watched international velvet too. DC were surprisingly unmoved. DD8 announced she doesn't like old fashioned movies and went off to play star stable DD12 at least did watch it and asked lots of questions but doesn't seem inspired. I think they are too used to fancy graphics and CGI, me on the other had was holding back tears.

HandbagAddiction · 02/01/2022 22:24

Ooh I’m on a roll now……

Theres a website horsenetwork.com which has the 50 best horse movies listed on it….

Enjoy…….Grin

XelaM · 02/01/2022 22:33

@liveforsummer Ohh, mine did complain about the bad quality on YouTube at first, but really got into it. I think because it's her dream as well and because she thought the coach sounded a bit like hers 😂 She even wants to see National Velvet now.

We are going through all the films I can find for free first before we start paying on Prime Grin

@IcedCoffeeMilkshake

Grin! yes!

I recall my dad standing over me in A&E and saying; 'It'll be showing ponies in hand now right?'

I smashed my knees to bits helping a local gypsy cob dealer with his horses and had each one rammed against fence posts before I was out of my teens.

My Mum used to go berserk at me being carted off in an ambulance and once in genuine anger yelled "A & E has more sodding pictures of your head than I have!"

IcedCoffeeMilkshake · 03/01/2022 06:26

@PinniGig Grin that did make me laugh.

(Although your poor knees! ).

IcedCoffeeMilkshake · 03/01/2022 06:26

Glad you enjoyed International Velvet OP. I had forgotten Anthony Hopkins was the coach!

@IcedCoffeeMilkshake Ah it's reight I'm used to it. Knees are knackered, shoulder is knackered - not much of me that isn't knackered to be honest.

Trying to get on a horse is like a Krypton Factor challenge. "Give me that mounting block there... and then pass us those two breezeblocks... and those two sturdy pallets. That's the fella there you go now I'm ready to roll"

Once I'm on and sat up it's fine I just can't come off under any circumstances or I'm a goner. If I were an eventer, I'd make greater saves than any other rider in history cos I'd have to Grin

'Sit up' the single most uttered phrase in the equestrian world 😆

LaPufalina · 03/01/2022 06:56

Ooh placemarking too. My DD is 5 but watched Spirit with her non horsey dad whilst I grumbled about how unrealistic it was every time I walked past Grin she also says hi-yah (like a karate shout!) on her pony now but that might be from another programmer. Pony prefers standard voice commands and ignores her. Any recommendations for the little ones?

MrsTimRiggins · 03/01/2022 06:59

Dark horse, it’s on Netflix, an interesting watch about Dream Alliance

XelaM · 03/01/2022 10:56

@LaPufalina Has she seen Free Rein?

OP posts:
XelaM · 03/01/2022 11:04

@LaPufalina "Moondance Alexander" is pretty harmless as well. It's free on Prime and it's based on a true story

OP posts:
fruitpastille · 03/01/2022 11:39

Not fiction but there is a horsey you tuber called This Esme which your dd might enjoy.

LaPufalina · 03/01/2022 11:44

Thanks both! She did quite like this Esme a year or so ago, will have another look! And no, not seen free rein yet. Lucky DH Grin

XelaM · 03/01/2022 11:44

@fruitpastille Yes my daughter watches this all the time!!
