Old fashioned pony names

I'm going to look at a Welsh A tomorrow, indulge me with some old fashioned names for a grey mare.

I'm not a fan of Elsa/Princess type names. She is registered but nothing springs out of it that I like - so far I like Bounty, Coco(nut), Snowmane (Snowy)...

Dapple

Didicat · 31/03/2021 16:16

I used to ride a Welsh A grey called Whisper

What is the ponies register name like to take inspiration from?

AwkwardPaws27 · 31/03/2021 16:16

The first pony I had lessons on was a little grey gelding called Sixpence.

I like Willow, Cobweb, Misty as suggested above.

Other ideas;
Ocean
Merrylegs (from Black Beauty)
Breeze
Snowdrop
Lily
Skye
Lace / Lacey
Opal
Bianca
Pebble

Bracken! All the pony names I knew in childhood are coming back to me now! As well as the above, and Gladys and Totty, there was a Pippit, a Sandy, a Blossom, a Dinky and a Midnight.

Soooo much more fun than baby names!

AwkwardPaws27 · 31/03/2021 16:18

Love Whisper!

ApplesPearsAndCrumble · 31/03/2021 16:18

I used to ride one called Bridget.

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 31/03/2021 16:22

Bluebell

Heyha · 31/03/2021 16:24

My favourite horse at one riding school was called Shane 😂

WhataMissMap · 31/03/2021 16:26

Our greys were
Dolly, Dapple and Piper.
Piper was my first love!

Pinkybike · 31/03/2021 16:26

Also from Flambards, Sweetbriar or Pheasant?

mamaoffourdc · 31/03/2021 16:27

Merrylegs x

CosmicVagina · 31/03/2021 16:28

Wow so many replies - thank you!

Sharon made me Grin

I though Merrylegs was too obvious, Misty is lovely. My research has suggested Willow and Blossom. I have a penchant for naming pets after James Bond characters so Tilly and Honey are possibilities.

@IndiaMay

I always thought if I had a horse I'd name it Drummer, like Christina's in Flambards. I vote Drummer.

Other options could be Grey, Misty, Treasure, Dolly, Missy, Nala

Ahh I used to be obsessed with Flambards (especially Dick (who personally I would have married first off!) Grin)

I love the name Drummer too.

If my memory serves me correctly, didn't Christina learn to ride on a grey called Strawberry (but that could have been a strawberry roan?)

I learnt to ride on an ancient grey mate called Silver. I really like Willow too!

Hope your viewing goes well tomorrow op!

broadstrokes · 31/03/2021 16:32

Pinkybike oh was Sweetbriar Christina's first horse? Really must read the trilogy again!

AwkwardPaws27 · 31/03/2021 16:32

Go for Tilly, then you have a perfect excuse to buy a little chestnut or palomino to name Honey too Grin

JeffTheOracle · 31/03/2021 16:34

I always think of a book with a girl that won a grey welsh pony mare called Misty in a competition then had to ride her across country to somewhere with grazing. That's what I'd call her!

This. New ponies should always come in pairs.
Notavegan · 31/03/2021 16:36

Oh god, don't name it before it's yours.

SingingSands · 31/03/2021 16:37

Beauty

Haven't read the thread but at a riding school I went to in the 80s they had:

Whisky, Guinness, Brandy, Sherry, Martini....

Sure there's more!

WombatChocolate · 31/03/2021 16:41

What about all the ponies in the other books KM Peyt onnwrote (not Flambards) about the girl who rode horses and ended up pregnant by teen rogue Pennington? Her name was Ruth and she entered lots of gymkhanas and outdid all the posh girls.

And Bill and Clarissa in Malory Towers loved their horses too.

Candlelight rings a bell as a pony name too.

Expectingsomethingwonderful · 31/03/2021 17:06

Melody or Merrylegs

Wbeezer · 31/03/2021 17:15

I knew a grey welshie called Melody and another called Starlight.

WombatChocolate · 31/03/2021 17:17

Thunder was Bill in Malory Towers’ horse.

Starrylight · 31/03/2021 17:26

May Day for the Bond theme?
