Old fashioned pony names

I'm going to look at a Welsh A tomorrow, indulge me with some old fashioned names for a grey mare.

I'm not a fan of Elsa/Princess type names. She is registered but nothing springs out of it that I like - so far I like Bounty, Coco(nut), Snowmane (Snowy)...

WombatChocolate · 31/03/2021 17:30

Fly-by-Night was the name of Ruth’s horse in the KM Payton book.

To me, Misty or Flicka is most reminiscent of time spent reading pony books in the 70s or early 80s.

What is Flambards? I was a SaddleClub fan growing up, and Jilly Cooper when I was a grown Grin

Pepper is fun but would become Peppa, DS loves Fireman Sam so Penny could be sweet. Bonnie and Lady and proper pony names, I rode both growing up

Op Flambards is a trilogy of books for teens by K M Peyton about an orphan and heiress who gets sent to live in a crumbling English country mansion (called Flambards) with her horse/hunting obsessed cruel uncle and two rather attractive (in different ways!) cousins. She in turn falls in love with horses and comes of age
through all three novels which are set in England just before, during and after WWI.

Although I've just looked the books up on Wikipedia and apparently there is a fourth book and after the TV series aired the author changed the ending of the original trilogy Shock

Flambards (Oxford, 1967)
The Edge of the Cloud (Oxford, 1969)
Flambards in Summer (Oxford, 1969)
Flambards Divided (1981)

Following on from Sixpence..
Tuppence

WombatChocolate · 31/03/2021 18:57

Broadstrokes...if you haven’t read the 4th Flambards you should read it. In my mind it was the right end and I thought it very poignant.

Oooh will do Wombat chocolate; I could just do with a nostalgic retreat ATM! Thanks! Smile

We have a little Grey Welshie. ( She is 28) Her name is Moonflower- hence my username. She is known as Moon.

Maybe Merlen? Welsh for pony.

We have had Gorse, Polly, Poppy, and Daisy.

MimsyBorogroves · 31/03/2021 19:43

I used to ride a welshie called Limerick.

ApplesPearsAndCrumble · 31/03/2021 19:47

I love anything with 'Moon' so Moonshine / Moonflower. Lovely.:)

On the same note - Luna. (My favourite Harry Potter character also).

HarrietSchulenberg · 31/03/2021 19:53

My best friend's Welsh Mountain pony was Silver. I also rode Peril, Shadow, Quaint and Sovereign (1980s, all different colours and sizes).

I knew a very Pony Club child who had a grey pony called Misty. She wasn't terribly into riding but had a very horsey and headscarfed mummy so had no choice. One of the funniest things I ever saw was Misty gently refuse a tiger trap and Child slide headfirst down her neck and into the tiger trap, getting her head wedged firmly between the poles. Then Misty happily trotted away. Mummy dithered for a second or two before running after the pony, leaving the stewards to free her wailing daughter. My unkind friend and I laughed so hard we had to sit down to watch the spectacle play out.

The Little White Horse was one of my favourite books as a child - Moonacre Manor and Maria Merryweather!
GirlofInkandStars · 31/03/2021 21:23

Ooh I like the welsh names for a section A. Merlen as mentioned up thread is lovely - what about Bronwyn or Gwyn (Means white in welsh?)

DotBall · 31/03/2021 23:49

Mari Llwyd (grey mare in Welsh).

ozymandiusking · 31/03/2021 23:51

Bramble

CosmicVagina · 01/04/2021 19:13

The Welsh was gorgeous but a bit jumpy and I'm looking for something for a toddler.

I also looked at a spotted shetland type, she was v sweet and well behaved. She fills the brief but now I'm having cold feet about taking on a second horse (I've had mine for 17 years - she's part of the furniture)
