You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

And ‘arses’ not sides.

My tired brain is having difficulty processing words. Not great for an English teacher.

SquashedFlyBiscuits · 21/05/2021 06:38

Very windy here too. To all those exhausted and facing a windy Friday, I offer you the best of luck!

Are a lot of schools cancelling end of year things then? We've been told to prepare everything we normally would: end of primary show, parents' performance, prom, etc. The belief is that the current roadmap will see a pretty "normal" end to the year with parents expecting all the usual things.
In fairness, we still did most of it last year, just couldn't do the show.

JanFebAnyMonth · 21/05/2021 07:08

“Parents will expect” and it (possibly) being allowed doesn’t make it the right thing to do.....

Iamnotthe1 · 21/05/2021 07:17

No, but if those end of year things are legally allowed and they are with the kids with whom I spend 6 hours a day entirely unprotected and in constant close contact, I'm struggling to find what I could say to justify cancelling them. It may be a primary/secondary difference as I know, in theory, secondary teachers should still be keeping their distance (ha!) and masks have only just been removed.

Beachhuts90 · 21/05/2021 07:31

My husband has his jab this weekend!! He's only very recently gone back to the office so it's good timing for his turn to come. I'm a little younger but only a few years so checking the booking site now daily, as his age wasn't announced and he wasn't contacted by the GP.

CarrieBlue · 21/05/2021 07:45

I'm struggling to find what I could say to justify cancelling them.

You’re not spending 6 hours a day in a classroom with their parents though - cramming them into the hall to watch the performance or assembly is a ridiculous expectation. Plus all those extra hours at prom (I hate that for primary, what nonsense!)/disco/after school fun activity aren’t directed time. Parents can expect lots of things, they might just have to moderate their expectations.

JanFebAnyMonth · 21/05/2021 07:50

Yes, bringing dozens of extra parents into school is risky.

But the decision might be overturned by events anyway, the 21 June step isn’t looking very certain at all.

Bedford Academy are having to close as they can’t get their outbreak under control. Moving to online learning from Monday.

Doesn’t sound like abandoning SI now would be a great idea.

TheHoneyBadger · 21/05/2021 09:56

When has something being a terrible idea for schools ever stopped them though Rafals?

Harriet it could well be the jab. I had mine last Wednesday and was suffering side effects right through till yesterday. Thankfully feeling mostly fine now.

Year 11s last day today and it is very windy and wet. At their early leaving time I will be teaching far away on the top floor of the main building so will miss any mayhem. Just received my new timetable for after half term when we abandon zones. I'd naively thought that that would mean I was in one department area only and might even have had days where I taught all day in the same room. Duh!

motherrunner · 21/05/2021 10:46

Just had my last lesson with Yr 13. They night me tickets to the theatre. Going to miss them so much!

MrsHerculePoirot · 21/05/2021 10:56

Oh @motherrunner that’s lovely!

@MrsHamlet how’s your friend and how are you doing with it all?

One more week to go - we’ve got various page type days where I have to deliver stuff given to me when I’d usually teach them.... can’t decide if this will be better or worse than being asked to teach them stuff they know makes no difference....

JanFebAnyMonth · 21/05/2021 11:14

I guess piggy will have more to tell us about Bedford Academy..... and please tell them on Data, please!

Piggywaspushed · 21/05/2021 11:27

I did mention it. It was ignored...

I think people here are very complacent. I was juts ranting at a colleague that the only people who get the risk of wandering about maskless and cuddling up to people are the staff with kids at schools with constant cases.

Piggywaspushed · 21/05/2021 11:28

The head said tow days ago on the news that he didn't know how much longer they could stay open.

Piggywaspushed · 21/05/2021 13:11

No surprises here : masks back at school for all from Monday...

motherrunner · 21/05/2021 15:37

Not sure how true it is but a friend has messaged me to say all schools in our next region have had to close due to Covid. Tried searching but media silence.

Piggywaspushed · 21/05/2021 15:45

I read that schools in Hart (so Hampshire?) are closed.

Piggywaspushed · 21/05/2021 16:32

Just eye rolling at prom thread.

Apparently some schools are doing proms . Really?? Blimey. The contact tracing for kids no longer actually at school would be enough to put any sensible head off!

Can you imagine telling the whole of year 11 to SI because of a case at a prom?

StationView · 21/05/2021 16:33

Y11. Y13.

Why. Don't. They. Just. Go?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 21/05/2021 16:35

Glad you’ve got masks back at least Piggy.

motherrunner · 21/05/2021 16:46

The Yr 13s at my lace are organising their own ‘prom’. Nothing to do with school.

winewolfhowls · 21/05/2021 16:49

Our y11s are still having a prom.

Kids bonkers today, not so bad in classrooms but feral outside in the corridors. Wild wet dinnertime too!
