You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

Piggy

It doesn't work when assessing against anything with actual criteria because nothing is being measured or checked against the criteria. We saw with primary writing that the ranking only system would have given "Greater Depth" to kids who weren't and skipped over kids who were. It was very interesting being part of a moderation where primary schools tried to justify a "Greater Depth" judgement on the basis that ranking said the child was GD. It did not go over well.

It only works as a first impressions ranking system, which has very limited use to be honest.

Today my HoD, second and I have done nothing but laugh. At everything. Think we’ve hit mania.

TheHoneyBadger · 19/05/2021 15:50

Hope it's contained in 6th form and coming from out of school mixing Piggy.

I actually feel better today than I have since the vaccine though so hopefully the corner has turned. No brain zaps! My head is fairly done in by a full day of teaching though.

Touch wood still no positive cases at my school. Year 11 finish on Friday and year 13 early next week I think. That frees up the block that year 11 have been using as their zone and mean the lunchbreak they were assigned to will be quieter. That hopefully means it will be safer and improving weather and the field being reopened should spread kids out further at lunch times.

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2021 16:23

Positive case in year 11 at my school today.

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2021 16:25

They swear by it in some MATs and Free School iam . And one of them does get really really good GCSE results (pre CAG ones!).

I am now fed up of seeing the whole year groups and realising how many kids were given whole structures, sentences , paragraphs to write, and quotation banks.

Iamnotthe1 · 19/05/2021 16:45

It'd be very interesting to see whether the GCSE results match the No Marking ranking/grading.

That must be frustrating Piggy - is there anything that can be done to rebalance the kids' results if it looks like some have had an unfair advantage? One of my friends had a parents go mental with them over the mere suspicion that one teacher had "aided" their class over the others (they hadn't).

What's the pirate game, am I missing out?!

motherrunner · 19/05/2021 16:59

Oh no @Piggywaspushed. Do many have to isolate?

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2021 16:59

About 30 mother.

Yes!

There's a Christmas version too.

My Y6s love it.

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2021 17:00

There was a fuss over 'aiding' in the mocks. However, I think those who fussed then are now in the aided classes...

LolaSmiles · 19/05/2021 17:08

Do you think that's probably a new variant Piggy?

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2021 17:09

In my school? Yes, probably. Definitely in DS's.

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2021 17:09

I was conscious of hearing coughing today.

motherrunner · 19/05/2021 17:18

After the Autumn term of rolling isolations and full closures, we have had just one case since school opened in March. I don’t know if that’s because my region of the West Mids was so badly hit from Sept-Dec or whether we’re in the eye of the storm.

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2021 17:31

Matt just said outdoors better and to wear masks.

Ermmmmm.... OK??

CarrieBlue · 19/05/2021 17:32

@JanFebAnyMonth - am I right remembering you as the audience member for ‘It’s a fair Cop’? Do you know if two people are allowed to listen on one ticket? DH has a ticket for ISIHAC and we would both like to ‘attend’ - can we link two sets of headphones?

ChloeDecker · 19/05/2021 18:04

Matt can fuck off.

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2021 18:40

Wow, 50 positive cases in a school near me in the last few weeks. 350 pupils out.

JanFebAnyMonth · 19/05/2021 18:53

Carrie I don’t recall anything about how many can listen.... and I did read all the Terms thoroughly.... the emphasis is on taking part/ reacting, which basically means laughing etc in the right places, because obvs that’s what they need.

It might say you have to listen through headphones, but I think I ended up not doing because I had tech problems anyway. Once it’s started and you’re logged in they can’t stop you, and more laughter etc gives them more audience reaction, surely!

Am envious of you/DH getting ISIHAC, I realised after my go that something with interaction between multiple panellists would be much more interesting than a solo performance!

Enjoy

Shit.

I’m teaching a class tomorrow and I haven’t planned for it at all Sad
That’s tonight’s job.

CarrieBlue · 19/05/2021 19:10

@JanFebAnyMonth - thanks, I think we’ll give it a go and see what happens - we both applied but he was the lucky one (and it counts as his birthday present, right? ;)
Though it’s not the same without Tim Sad

TheHoneyBadger · 19/05/2021 19:50

That's one I haven't heard about Piggy - you're not far away. Has there been anything your way Jan? You guys are kind of all around me.

JanFebAnyMonth · 19/05/2021 19:55

No, not that I know of Honey.

John Deeks is appalled at the answer another scientist received to a FOI request for the data coming from school trials etc. I was feeling all fired up too, reading his and others’ comments. However when you actually read what the DHSC wrote, it sounds pretty reasonable - just that they’ll be releasing it in the very near future and until then they’re not going to give one person early access! Or am I missing something?

Hmmm, so how will we be asked to increase learning time for pupils, but NOT be asked to ‘do more for no more’?!

Answers on the back of a fag packet...
