You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

Another week off here!

Those shoes are what I'd call plimsolls here and deck shoes back home. Unfortunately it happens a lot that I get called out on/made fun of for using American language even when it's perfectly understandable, so I try to switch where I can. The result is I can barely remember which is which now!

HarrietDVane · 11/04/2021 17:13

Another week for me too, thank goodness.

The game is It (but Tag where I live now) and the safe space is Base (no idea what they call Base here).

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 11/04/2021 17:24

Wagging here but truanting among staff (no idea why). Bunk off is used too. Skiving is present but not working.

Alley is a gully or a ginnel.

Who knows what a gambole is?

Cracklefraggle · 11/04/2021 17:25

Safe space was called barley when I was a kid. Think it still is??

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 11/04/2021 17:28

Safe space was den or aki. Tig was the word if you caught someone.

JanFebAnyMonth · 11/04/2021 17:30

It, possibly tag. Base (US-influenced?) or home. Skiving.

Isn't it a forward roll? I've never used it but I've heard people in the Midlands call it that.
Saucery · 11/04/2021 17:39

Barley! I’ve been trying to remember that one for ages. You weren’t in Den if you used it (a specific place in the playground) and it could only be used sparingly, if you fell over and hurt yourself, or were off to the toilets across the game arena, for instance. Children who did use it too much were not allowed to carry on playing, because what’s the point of catching someone if they continually whine Barley at you Grin

JanFebAnyMonth · 11/04/2021 17:44

Oh yes, “Tig!”

TheHoneyBadger · 11/04/2021 17:45

Forgot about bunking off.

Massive ewwww at meaty jam.

Envious of all the one week left people and trying to remind myself I was off whilst you were still working for a week.

I'm going to the gym with friend at 8am then getting dropped back here for a quick shower and turn around. In work for 10.30am. Going to be a shock when my alarm goes off at 6am. Monday is usually my easy day but gym and appraisal review make it a bit more hectic.

motherrunner · 11/04/2021 18:28

Yup. Gambole is a forward roll. I didn’t even know a forward roll was called a forward roll until I went to uni!

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 11/04/2021 18:45

mother nor did I. Gambole is such a Midlands regional word. Another is 'round the wrekin'.

motherrunner · 11/04/2021 18:55

I say ‘round the Wrekin’ and don’t even give it a thought that it wouldn’t make sense to anyone out of the West Mids!

Language is so fab!

Michino · 11/04/2021 19:08

Oh yes, we go round the Wrekin here. We also go to "schoowul". Being on the border, we also have "Nian" and"Taid", and "cwtch".

HarrietDVane · 11/04/2021 19:09

I think 'Yampy' is another Midlands word, but I might be wrong.

motherrunner · 11/04/2021 20:19

@Michino My friend is married to an Welsh man and she always signs off texts with ‘cwtch’, never hated do to before then.

Yeah, ‘yampy’ is very BC.

Medra · 11/04/2021 20:30

My friend’s mum was the ‘wagger woman’ (EWO) when we were at school.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 11/04/2021 20:44

If we’re going with Welsh, then we have to mention ‘now in a minute’.

JanFebAnyMonth · 11/04/2021 20:49

Are you lot expecting the rest of us to keep up with all of that........?

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 11/04/2021 20:50

I follow this maths dude who does log scale stuff of cases. This is most recent (minus 3 days to account for lag). Check out case decline flattening out while schools were back.

TheHoneyBadger · 11/04/2021 21:06

Hmm wonder what it will look like a few weeks from tomorrow. Hopefully just flat not increasing.

Reminds me I haven't done LFT. Will do it very early in the morning when I've taken my thyroid med and am not allowed to eat or drink for an hour. Two birds with one stone whilst deprived of coffee.

I've set multiple alarms in the hopes of waking up.

Good luck to everyone going back tomorrow and for those not we expect dinner on the table when we get back. Actually a gin and tonic would suffice.

BigBobBoots · 11/04/2021 21:22

Good luck to all those going back to school tomorrow!

HarrietDVane · 11/04/2021 21:31

Good luck everyone going back. We'll have the gin and tonic at the ready when you get home.

Beachhuts90 · 11/04/2021 21:32

@HarrietDVane

Another week for me too, thank goodness.

The game is It (but Tag where I live now) and the safe space is Base (no idea what they call Base here).

Opposite for me. Grew up calling it tag but my kids at school call the game It. They use home and base. I always get fake annoyed at base because they're all obsessed with tagging me and having me chase them, then they gather up on home base. So I try and tag them but pretend there's an invisible forcefield preventing me from tagging them when they're on it.

I'm glad to have another week off now but thinking about that made me smile.
