You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

Oh and the no exclusions stuff is crazy coming from a union. Makes me glad to be nasuwt despite the fact they seem to do nothing

noblegiraffe · 09/04/2021 09:15

Not going well for the NEU twitter.com/jamestheo/status/1380289047390789632?s=21 - NASUWT page has a ‘high volume of people trying to join’ and Edapt reporting a record number of new subscribers.

And I can’t see any update from the NEU on twitter? Only Karam Bales seems to be talking about it (v defensively).

GuyFawkesDay · 09/04/2021 09:29

Been a bit AWOL, sorry.
Hugs to those who need it. Studiously avoiding marking until next week, when I will have a panic day in school, no doubt.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 09/04/2021 09:39

Just to flag those teacher discount websites if you don't already use them. Saved myself £100 across various purchases this holiday already.

I've seen a couple of interesting jobs, to take the plunge? Or stick with the status quo....

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 09/04/2021 09:47

YES to teachers discounts- I've saved myself hundreds of pounds on Christmas and birthday presents over lockdown! Also quite a lot at Seasalt, Boden and White Stuff on work clothes.

TheHoneyBadger · 09/04/2021 09:48

I guess remember that applying and even being offered the role doesn’t mean you have to take it.

Piggywaspushed · 09/04/2021 09:53

Edapt don't actually have a platform on anything. I think they might be good for individual teachers in a pickle (arguable better than any help I ever got) but they won' develop a voice or campaign. I'd be worried if they became a number one choice for the profession.

It's so odd the way NEU ahs gone. ATL used to be so wet.

WhenSheWasBad · 09/04/2021 09:56

You posted on that NI thread first, Whenshe, so I think that means I’m stalking you! Grin

Sounds exciting Herc I’m guessing it’s for a different role?

I have a mammoth task on my hands. Need to get my kids dressed and bundled into the car so we can go for a walk. Looks like being a nice but cold day up North.

Piggywaspushed · 09/04/2021 10:07

I might have to stay away from a NI thread. I lost my temper with DS1 yesterday when he said the rioting in NI was because of covid.

MN does not have a very nuanced view on Scotland, let alone NI!

If your DS even knows that NI is part of the UK then he is doing better than some MNetters, Piggy.

Prince Philip has died so now the media can get on with the important job of speculating whether Meghan Markle will attend the funeral.

CallmeHendricks · 09/04/2021 12:31

"Prince Philip has died so now the media can get on with the important job of speculating whether Meghan Markle will attend the funeral."

Hmm, yes. (But my money's on 'no, she won't.' She's got the perfect reason not to, being heavily pregnant. Harry, however...????)

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 09/04/2021 12:43

Watch out for the bad news they still need to bury while this circus happens.

StaffRepFeistyClub · 09/04/2021 12:46

The media have all gone into their well-rehearesed mode - they have had all their Prince Philip stuff ready to go for a while now.

The BBC guy who just read NS statement made me and husband laugh. He read it with such derision like 'Nicola does not give a fuck he's dead".

namechangedyetagain · 09/04/2021 13:06

I'm feeling really emotional about Philip dying. And my youngest is in tears because she misses her uncle. What can I say to that?
Supposed to be going out this afternoon but I'm thinking I'd rather stay in, drink gin and cry.

In other news I guess I'm done with writing for today 😭

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 09/04/2021 13:07

I'll be avoiding all telly and Twitter until after the funeral. Just in time for us to empty our house into the container on the front lawn.

Piggywaspushed · 09/04/2021 13:08

Oh yes, he is pretty aware. That's why it annoyed me so much. although in my household NI is a part of the island of Ireland

This came up in the Race Report where Seamus Heaney was called a 'Commonwealth writer writing in the English language' which showed astonishing ignorance of Heaney's background. As well as being a bizarre example.

Gavin Williamson pleading with Boris to be made Chief Whip again.

So long as he's not pleading to be allowed to stay Education Sec.

I'm feeling unexpectedly sad about Prince Philip. Mainly sad for the Queen on a human level, I think. It's such an enormous loss for her.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 09/04/2021 13:21

I'm sad for the Queen. To spend so long with one person must be heartbreaking when they have gone.

Crumbs, losing your husband after a 70 odd year marriage. Poor Queen.

Looks more like a carefully crafted insult to me. The contribution of Irish writers to literature in English is considerable if not unsurpassed.

Piggywaspushed · 09/04/2021 14:06

There is a bit more detail here (remember Heaney identifies as Irish : Ireland NOT in the Commonwealth!)

www.irishnews.com/news/northernirelandnews/2021/04/05/news/seamus-heaney-described-as-steeped-in-british-cultural-traditions-in-controversial-race-report-2277806/

Either ignorant or offensive or both...
