You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

Do not give the staffroom password to non-staff as it attracts the wrong sort of crowd.

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation. Do not sit on the chairs and do wear a mask

I can't bear feet. They're just nasty.

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2021 20:24

Not sure I trust this Edapt outfit...

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 08/04/2021 20:28

Did you see the tweet form the guy who said he wished more experienced classroom teachers would tweet and drown out the educlebs.

Alex Rawlings? He's right - there are loads of voices we don't hear from in teaching. The ones who are rolling their eyes at yet another new thing, then just getting 9n with teaching their class and getting decent results.

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2021 20:35

Yes, him.

The replies were interesting.

Personally, I won't tweet as a 'classroom teacher' because I know no one would see it/ it will be drowned out etc, but also because a lot of the EduTweeters seem not to be policed by the schools they work in where relevant. I feel if you use a professional account you shouldn't be tweeting opinions and stirring up debate. I am amazed by how political attention seeking some heads and DHTs are. But MPs are the same.

WhenSheWasBad · 08/04/2021 20:40

I was a bit shocked by the NEUs approach to exclusions. No exclusions ever seems like a very unwise approach to me.

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2021 20:46

It isn't actually the NEU to be fair. It is a faction (NME) who presented a motion. It is being presented (via very poor reporting in the TES and then filtered via Twitter) as an NEU position.

I don't like the way it is being conflated with proposed consideration of exam culture (which is a good idea) . Some of the sneerers are putting these two things together as bonkers.

I do think something needs to be done about the shocking off rolling and exclusion figures of working class black boys : but not this.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 08/04/2021 20:46

I also don't tweet much opinion as a classroom teacher. I have been spoken to before about tweets and have stfu! I wasn't that controversial just a few likes etc but SLT didn't like it.

I'm not averse to opinions and debate and I think it can be useful being non anonymous. Some of the behaviour is child like though.

noblegiraffe · 08/04/2021 21:07

The NME lot are saying “the NEU has just passed our motion for a moratorium on exclusions!”

Doesn’t that mean it’s an official NEU position? I’m confused.

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2021 21:10

Apparently not. Pistols at dawn?

The motion was also a lot longer than that.

noblegiraffe · 08/04/2021 21:12

No way would I ever tweet anything under my real name.

Not that I tweet under a fake one either. But twitter just seems to be either setting you up to be piled-on, sexually harassed or reported to your employer for wrong-think. Or even worse - totally ignored!

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2021 21:18

My male colleague is desperate to be Twitter famous. It's so desperate.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 08/04/2021 21:22

I tweet as a teacher. I like and retweet lots of political stuff too. I don't have my name on there, but I do have my picture, and some colleagues from current school and past schools follow me/I follow them. I don't say anything I wouldn't say aloud in school though.

What I don't get about twitter is why people want followers.. and openly say that/court followers. Do they also walk into rooms and shout until everyone is listening to them?

LolaSmiles · 08/04/2021 21:25

I find myself concerned about the No More Exclusions group as it seems to be pushing a very narrow ideological position that doesn't seem that far away from the 'everything will resolve if you have a hot chocolate with someone and ask them why their victim pushed their buttons' branch of behaviour consultancy.

noblegiraffe · 08/04/2021 21:28

It's similar to the whole ban the booths campaign about isolation rooms too, the NEU signed up to that as well.

The NEU support for the Paul Dix school of behaviour management is why I'll never switch to them.

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2021 21:29

There seems to be a lot of infiltration by fringe groups in education at the moment.

noblegiraffe · 08/04/2021 21:36

Do you have lots of followers, rule? I suppose people will want followers to make it worth their while actually tweeting anything.

That's what I like about MN, no followers, no likes or anything. You post your stuff and have no real idea about who or how many people are reading it, so no chasing followers (or seeing them drop if you say something duff!)

LolaSmiles · 08/04/2021 21:52

Same here Noble. I considered moving to the NEU but have been put off by the way they get behind fringe campaigns.
It worries me that despite the workforce raising issues regarding behaviour, they're still not interested in highlighting the issues. I think we would probably get more support on behaviour from many parents than some senior members of NEU.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 08/04/2021 21:54

No idea! I follow a mix of statisticians, anti-Brexit, teaching, art, feminist and skiing bods. Not many famous types. Quite like to drop a comment on a right wing loon thread every so often so I can have an argument. Mostky I have nice hats about random things.

MrsHamlet · 08/04/2021 22:01

My ex student who tweets does exactly that!

Piggywaspushed · 08/04/2021 22:18

You have fangirls, not followers noble. A legion of disciples. And stalkers.

noblegiraffe · 08/04/2021 23:30

And haters....so many of those!

It would have been interesting to have likes and dislikes on those threads tbf.

Back to obscurity now though.

WhenSheWasBad · 09/04/2021 08:30

I’ve just seen you on another thread noble this must make me a “fan girl” Grin

TheHoneyBadger · 09/04/2021 08:34

I slept another 8 hours and could’ve gone back to sleep again but forced myself up and have at least got the washing machine and dishwasher loaded and switched on and the rubbish out.

I have one set of year 8 assignments left to mark and I am going to go in and do them even though they’re not actually really needed till next Friday. I want to start this term with a clear deck and try to stay ahead of myself. It’s a long term and I don’t want to work over half term.

I’ve decided there will be occasional book lessons this term and one topic definitely merits a couple of lessons watching the Book Thief. I’ve spent the whole year doing all the work really because of gaps in attendance and needing to teach a lot itms because of how much has been missed.

Would like a bit more balance this term and get them back into (or into for the first time in some cases) actually putting some effort in to at least be able to do a bit of independent comprehension work sometimes. If some fucker decides to do a learning walk and judge, tough.

noblegiraffe · 09/04/2021 08:59

You posted on that NI thread first, Whenshe, so I think that means I’m stalking you! Grin

Honey that amount of sleep doesn’t seem right and I’m sure you’ve mentioned sleeping loads on this thread a few times. Might be worth checking in with your GP.

TheHoneyBadger · 09/04/2021 09:13

I think it’s been a pattern of not sleeping well at all and then epic sleep. I’ll keep an eye on it. Think the gp would just remind me my thyroid blood test is long overdue.

I’m feeling relieved we’re keeping masks after Easter. The idea of having a classroom or at least staying in one subject area still seems a long way off though. I’m not convinced we’ll have that back in September. I feel for the science and dt teachers who’ve had to teach in non specialist rooms all this time.
