You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention

How do you kick kids out of a lesson on Teams? (Asking for a friend Grin)

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 12/01/2021 20:08

Click the 3 dots next to their name on the participants tab and there's an option to boot them out.

MsAwesomeDragon · 12/01/2021 20:14

Can I ask for help with using the xp pen? I'm using the deco 01 tablet, but while I can use it as a mouse I have no idea how to make that show up as writing Blush How can I write on a ppt, or a pdf, etc?

Piggywaspushed · 12/01/2021 20:20

MNHQ deleted the really nasty FSM thread so that's good.

Hi! Start your PowerPoint presentation in Slideshow view. Move your cursor to where the four helper buttons appear in the lower left corner of your slide (can’t explain it any differently sorry!) Click on the Pen button and choose "Pen Color." Red is the default colour Grin

Yes, piggy I was just sat on that one reporting post after post. Horrible stuff. I’m hoping that it was trolls posting for kicks but I suspect some was genuine opinion.

@HercwasanEnemyofEducation

Why not just email the staff a link to the meeting? Start one from your calendar and send it out?

Or create a whole staff team. It will be worth the pain long term!

See I don't know how to do that but since I've set up class meetings it must be possible. Around 80 names so not keen to make a team!

Our classes are all pre-populated from SIMS. I wonder if SIMS can have staff groups...

Make sure your “lobby” is set to only you allowing people in. Or they can keep popping back in through the he whole lesson. I think you go to manage meeting options on those 3 dots.

Some of my colleagues learnt that one the hard way.

MsAwesomeDragon · 12/01/2021 20:32

Thank you. I hadn't thought to open it as a side show 🤦. I forgot those buttons exist at the bottom.

Now how about writing on a pdf? I want to annotate an exam paper. Is snip and sketch the quickest/easiest way?

I can use mine on word when I’ve clicked the “draw” tab at the top of Word (where you find files and insert).

Then it just works.

When I’m presenting a power point I just draw on it and it does it by magic.

chocolateisavegetable · 12/01/2021 20:36

I just need to say this to a group of people who will understand ... I am shattered. Completely and utterly shattered, and it's only Tuesday of the second week back. Thank you for listening so I didn't have to say it to certain family members who try to ring me during the day and act all confused that I didn't answer because "the schools are closed."

MrsHamlet · 12/01/2021 20:37

Mine works by magic too 🤣

ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas · 12/01/2021 20:37

Ooh Herc I think I might be able to do that. Can't tell from my phone and trying very hard not to boot up work laptop till the morning!
What is this sims I hear you speak of MrsH? Wink We do not have such a thing. Our equivalent is not accessible from home. (It's not a staff group I would wish to put on that tbh!)
Thanks both for your help

CallmeAngelina · 12/01/2021 20:38

I hear ya, chocolate.
I'm part-time, yet have done 12-13 hour days ever since last Monday, and around half that each day of the weekend.
I'm too old for this malarkey.

HarrietDVane · 12/01/2021 20:38

Hello everyone - just caught up!

I am exhausted. I mean, I thought teaching was tiring before but this is a whole new level. No live lessons required/allowed, so I'm recording lessons before and after school for the home learners, then teaching a full day with my KW/V children. Our marking policy refuses to die, so all work produced, wherever it's produced, needs detailed daily feedback. Proper PPA time also seems to have been "overlooked" in our Brave New Timetable - I'm getting an hour and a half off a week but as I'm f/t that's really not enough.

My other gripe is moany parents phoning and emailing throughout the day, expecting instant responses, and getting shirty about having to wait until lunchtime/after school. Ffs, I'm teaching a full timetable here!

And breathe.

Wine and solidarity to all.

WhenSheWasBad · 12/01/2021 20:41

Sorry mrsA I think I once tried writing on a pdf but it wouldn’t work. No idea why.

CallmeAngelina · 12/01/2021 20:43

I've just had a snippy message from a parent. DH (as in husband) won't let me respond until the morning!
Probably wise.

CallmeAngelina · 12/01/2021 20:44

I mean, who the FUCK do some of them think they are talking to?
Angry

MrsHamlet · 12/01/2021 20:46

Parents need to back away. The kids generally know better!

TheHoneyBadger · 12/01/2021 20:46

Yuk - that half a pepper and a few random ingredients completely ignores the fact that food poverty often comes with fuel poverty and quite possibly equipment poverty ergo you should provide food that is ready and at most needs warming up or ideally give them the bloody money because it's going to go in the whole family's lunch pot not a separate meal with half a pepper for one child.

Obviously a voucher minimises the loss between money issued and money received - messing about with your wanker mates in the middle obviously results in more money taken out in profit in between that should be arriving with the child. Wtf do you do with half a pepper when you're living in temporary accommodation without proper cooking facilities?

I'm having to become quite assertive in ways I'm not used to but am currently leaning towards finding it's better to be clear and concise eg. the lessons in the folder don't have the resources attached and are therefore not viable please attach the resources so I can use the lessons - rather than my former waffly please could you look at, sorry to be a pain but, etc. The latter, despite being very polite and cap doffing, seemed to result in strange paranoia responses and tone policing so I've ended up with the former because at least it's clear and can't be misconstrued. This is missing - this needs adding etc. I'm learning to be a lot more economical with my words with the trainee too - when I'm, 'could i suggest', 'perhaps you could try', 'i would consider adding' I just get resentment and nark so I'm now more do this, don't do that, scrap that bit and make sure you include this. Bizarrely response is much better even though I feel rude.

People are bloody weird.

chocolateisavegetable · 12/01/2021 20:48

Thanks Angelina. I think you should type up the reply you'd like to send tonight but DON'T do it by clicking on reply (so you don't actually send it by mistake!), and then send an actual (calmer) reply tomorrow.

god yes! My bloody mother tried calling me repeatedly today - eventually I got a second and sent her a message saying I can't talk, I'm working plus dealing with broken boilers. If it's something urgent put in a message and I'll get back to you when you get a chance.

They really think we're on holiday or something when I'm part time working full time currently to be available to kids online.

I find I speak to people like they're dogs sometimes.
Put that down.
Pick that up.
Sit.
Quiet.
Email it by 3pm.
