You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff only – a sort of room of requirement. Baiters, haters, goaders, and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Do not give the staffroom password just in case it attracts the wrong sort

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the booze is stashed - Thirsty Tuesdays, Fizz Fridays now in operation.

If you come with a stick to goad us then that is not allowed in the staffroom and you will receive a detention
Peston says exams cancelled twitter.com/peston/status/1346172214580834305?s=21
Oh my!

noblegiraffe · 04/01/2021 19:15

If that’s true wtf will Y11 and 13 be doing for the rest of the year?

GravityFalls · 04/01/2021 19:15

His “assumption” there does seem to be based on logic that Johnson is not famed for following, however.

SansaSnark · 04/01/2021 19:15

Peston doesn't seem that confident on exams cancelled?

I don't know how we can do CAGs this year.

We stupidly planned on Mocks being able to go ahead this half term, so my Y11 have only done one in class assessment since September.

noblegiraffe · 04/01/2021 19:17

The assumption seems to be that Peston knows exactly what is coming and is chucking in some language to make it sound like he is speculating.

Piggywaspushed · 04/01/2021 19:17

Inevitable.

That's my issue. Cancel them - fine. But not now and not without a bloody plan!
Saucery · 04/01/2021 19:19

Fuck, NO. Devastated for DS if that is true. Which is purely personal and selfish of me, I know, but Parent Hat on indulgently for a minute. Angry Angry

Piggywaspushed · 04/01/2021 19:19

Well, to be fair they now do actually have time to come up with a crackpot plan. And an algorithm.

noblegiraffe · 04/01/2021 19:20

Really hope they’re not cancelled. We can’t do CAGs based on what we’ve got so far. Our Y11 mocks had half the kids out isolating.

Piggywaspushed · 04/01/2021 19:21

MY DS did much better out of CAGs ( I suspect) and would love to tell you in person saucery how much better it was for his mental health and peace of mind. He intends to tell year 11s this if they start panicking.

Piggywaspushed · 04/01/2021 19:21

However, the gov will probably come up with some awful plan.

Same here our mocks were due for Feb.
Piggywaspushed · 04/01/2021 19:23

Is this a maths teacher thing noble because I could assess my students' ability without mocks. In fact mocks (and real exams) often throw up the 'wrong' result.

Not meant to sound supercilious... just curious.

JanuaryChill · 04/01/2021 19:23

Well, he says it's his assumption, to be fair. If Boris announces this tonight I'll be very scared as I'd normally expect them to keep everyone waiting for at least another two weeks!

It's hard with Science. What makes it hard is I am only allowed a certain number of grades and its hard to share them out.
HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 04/01/2021 19:24

We need a plan that states explicitly online learning engagement will be used as part of the CAG process.

Our mocks weren't well attended either.

Piggywaspushed · 04/01/2021 19:25

Why are you only 'allowed' a certain number of grades?

Dennis Sherwood would love this!

MrsHamlet · 04/01/2021 19:25

Our maths dept say the same as noble
I could do mine now. The trouble is that we don't have consistent evidence across the dept.
There needs to be a plan before you cancel something. Isn't that just common sense?

noblegiraffe · 04/01/2021 19:25

I think so. You can’t assess kids’ maths ability to pass an exam on anything but their performance in exams.

Nathan is screwed then 🤣
Piggywaspushed · 04/01/2021 19:26

The seem to manage in Finland, though? No exams until aged 18.

Saucery · 04/01/2021 19:26

Ah thanks, piggy I do appreciate that reassurance. God knows people are facing worse than not getting to sit exams , but DS was on track to get a true reflection of his abilities and go to the Uni of his first choice on that. He won’t take his foot off the gas at all but I hope he can still get to that Uni.
Anyway, I’ll park the self-pity. This is all about so many young people and so many futures after all.

To fit the progress 1 from previous years.
Piggywaspushed · 04/01/2021 19:27

Were your schools not all planning on the assumption exams would be cancelled? Ours has been . their plans are beyond shit but they ahve been planning.
