You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to beat us with then please do so elsewhere and not in the staffroom

Just general what has your school done questions which used the word effective a lot. They asked about wellbeing and level of consultation too.

Also questions about whether you’re expected to clean or your day has lengthened etc. It was quite thorough but my brain is knackered and can’t remember much.

Thanks to all who encouraged me to rejoin a union. I can’t work out how you find out if your school has a rep and who they are if so though.

Report
Mistressiggi · 21/07/2020 12:15

It's really bad if you don't know who the rep is. They should be advertising themselves all over the shop! The regional office for your union will know who the school rep is, though your school might not have one (in which case you deal with the next person up, ie in the union offices). That's how it is for us anyway.
Do you feel you have gone over to the dark side by joining? Grin

I’ve just finished my placement and officially an NQT Wine. Though no job yet so not such a happy holiday. Do many jobs get advertised in the summer holidays Confused?

Our union reps usually send a whole staff email in September introducing themself and saying to let them know if you are in the union. There is also information on a notice board in the staffroom.

CallmeAngelina · 21/07/2020 13:36

We have no union rep on our (large primary) staff. It requires a volunteer and no one has stepped up.

Omg-just been sent a link to an article about teachers on the Fail-it’s revolting!

Parents up in arms apparently about lazy teachers who haven’t set foot in a classroom since March and backed by Marxist Unions, still refusing to go back in September, are still getting a massive pay rise whilst nurses aren’t!

I feel like bloody running away and hiding sometimes.

I looked at UsFor Them on Twitter, who tag the likes of Hitchens and Toby Young in their posts.

But they aren't alt right anti maskers and anti vaxxers, oh no!!

The Failers hate all public sector workers. I'd be disappointed if they weren't outraged. What I think is despicable is Sunak dressing this up as a reward for the pandemic and not a long discussed and deserved pay award.

Anyone in a private school not getting this? DH's school have been told no pay rises.

If schools are critical infrastructure though, they need to be funded as such!

I did assume it was a bad sign. I may have to be that volunteer.

No dark side. I was always a member at the start of my career and it was the norm then. After a long break and then supply and then a very part time role it didn’t seem necessary. Now back to reality plus realising union membership is likely way down compared to my early days so yes it makes a difference.

When I started at the near beginning of this century the majority of teachers were members. Recent situations with hod setting extra directed time and slt not seeing that as a problem has made me wake up to the new realities of a profession I’ve rejoined.

I've hopped off and on these threads. I've not been on much since we went back to school though because I've been relatively full on and the negativity on the main boards had been affecting my mental health. I'm a TA, and like most in this last few months, have had increased hours, and been doing weekly PPA cover. I've had the loveliest time ever. The class teacher more or less stuck to the planning (a novelty for me!) and also did most of the planning for me for the lessons I covered, just leaving me space to add in my own little bits and bobs.

End of term was a little strange but we were given as much freedom as we wanted to make it nice for the children and largely succeeded I think. We ended it all off with a socially distanced (more or less) staff picnic on the village green.

I'm grateful that the SLT circulated the new plan on the last day, but noticed that many elements of it are the same as we've been doing. That's worked well by and large, but some things have not been happening reliably (increased cleaning and bin emptying) so I'm not sure how they can promise it for September. We'll have to wait and see I suppose. I'm hoping that the cleaner/caretaker will get extra hours to cover it. They were working hard, but the school is very large.

Anyway. HOLIDAYS!!! Grin

Ok please can we agree to call them ThemForUs? It’s a way more accurate description of their agenda. We are the them who have to actively put ourselves and children at unmitigated risk to allow their ‘us’ to enjoy an economy boosting latte in peace.

So basically Them For Us or Us For Them just want schools to be open everyday apart from bank holidays.

Are they going to give us extra money? Thought not

Where were they when sports fields were being sold off?

Where were they when music lessons and resources were being chucked under the bus?

Where were they when art resources were being scrapped as no funding?

Where were they when SEN provision was being scrapped and now being on the cheap?

It is all very well getting all high n’mighty now because they were stuck without childcare for a few weeks. They didn’t support any attempts to help with funding before
