You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to beat us with then please do so elsewhere and not in the staffroom

Thanks riga. M6 is an insult. I appreciate some will say ah but you could be taking on tlr points but we do actually need experienced classroom teachers doing full teaching timetables and you only need so many chiefs.

TheHoneyBadger · 22/07/2020 18:44

Oh and I couldn’t pass threshold because of subject knowledge. I was teaching a non specialist subject and had trained and educated myself to the point of doing better in appraisals and pupils learning progress than many specialists and I’d produced tons of lower ability resources to deal with the totally undifferentiated shite that the department had for ks4 but that didn’t count.

Meh.

Beawillalwaysbetopdog · 22/07/2020 18:45

What annoys me most, but I won't say on the main board, is that as someone on ups3 this payrise is the only rise. Most others will progress up the pay scale as well so their % increase is then massively higher by default.

TheHoneyBadger · 22/07/2020 18:46

I’m a moany, whingey, bitter teacher I know Grin. Not sure if I qualify as leftie anymore though as I can’t vote for anyone who pretends not to know what a woman is.

RigaBalsam · 22/07/2020 18:47

Not fair that you can't go through threshold.

Piggywaspushed · 22/07/2020 18:57

Talking of The Guardian , interesting article which goes part way to explaining the MN massive's wrath but actually also says many of their feelings are actually not accurate or maybe even a bit exaggerated?

Piggywaspushed · 22/07/2020 18:57

And why don't they just LTBs instead of blaming us ! Wink

MrsDanvers123 · 22/07/2020 18:59

Ironically, does the pay rise and 30,000 starting salary not mean that us older UPS 3 teachers become less expensive and better value for money as we know what we are doing, and have proven track records? For not much more money, you can have an experienced professional stood in front of the class, and using traditional competency procedures is not going to save you enough money to buy in nearly 2 NQTs as it can do at the moment!

Interesting point!

@TheHoneyBadger

It certainly attracts a ‘not sure what to do with my degree and can’t afford post grad oh look you get paid to train to teach I guess I could give it a go for a year and if I don’t like it I can leave’ contingent. It’s keeping people that’s the sticking point.

And that’s the bit they never want to address.

30 years ago I remember conversations in my final year about PGCE as a safety net if you didn’t get your preferred Milk Round job offer.
Kidneybingo · 22/07/2020 19:24

I thought this about us UPS 3ers. We become comparatively better value. Especially as my observation is that the UPS3 women in my school seem to work particularly hard and efficiently. Makes the emotional blackmail by SLT to do lots of extra tasks less likely to work though maybe.

MrsDanvers123 · 22/07/2020 19:30

We just need to remember to keep our game faces on, nod towards the new initiatives and cherry pick the ones that are worthwhile in enhancing our practice... I am happy with the amount I am paid, but I am angered with the continuous devaluing of our profession and the persistent bullying that we are expected to endure from various groups with their own agendas. This job is not a vocation, but it is a job that that the majority of teachers can only stay in for years if you have the passion to want to do it well, and the skin of a rhino!

MrsDanvers123 · 22/07/2020 19:32

Or should it be the hind of a rhino...(blush)

I'm sorry, but in 2020, if you are in a relationship with children where you are unhappy that the childcare sharing in your parental relationship is not fair, then sort it out. My partner went part time for child care reasons when maternity leave was over, and so did I. When she started school, I went back to full time, so did he. During lockdown we split our time in half for childcare, and for 'own time'.

Myothercarisalsoshit · 22/07/2020 19:58

It depends though goats.
If you earn substantially more than your partner you may feel pressured to return full time or vice versa. I agree that ideally everything would be 50/50 but the reality is often different.

noblegiraffe · 22/07/2020 20:00

Saw this and thought of you lot.

Absolutely hoping the child care comment wasn't aimed at me. Trouble is, as currently dh is the main earner, he pays all the mortgage, insurances, bills etc. And so is not in a position to go part time to collect children or split 50/50. He leaves the house at 630, returns about 12 hours later on a good day. Does more than fair share at home with the children and house.

I only mentioned the cost of courses and child care as not all trainees are doing it for the money. I'm certainly not. I have never seen a profession work so hard for such little pay (or thanks).

hedgehogger1 · 22/07/2020 20:55

DH earns a lot more than me. I mean my part time salary is a pittance compared to his. Plus he's the boss. So if it came to someone having to not work it would be me. We've considered it in the past when I worked somewhere hellish but I like to be able to spend money guilt free

hedgehogger1 · 22/07/2020 20:56

I got to UPS1 and stopped as I wasn't willing to do any more on top of what I was already doing!

TheHoneyBadger · 22/07/2020 21:00

Very grateful for you lot.

JulyBreeze · 22/07/2020 21:10

Seen this article on BBC website this evening, @ohthegoats? Journalists use MN (your thread!) for research once again. Well done! Pity they couldn't pay us or something....

I took it as a real reminder to be careful what we post on here, both about our own loves and also about our workplaces/ employers.

JulyBreeze · 22/07/2020 21:12

Oops apologies, that should have been addressed to @noblegiraffe, not @ohthegoats !
