You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to beat us with then please do so elsewhere and not in the staffroom

Melbourne have just moved entirely to online learning as well. I would say that the Aussies have no faith in that NSW paper!

NeurotrashWarrior · 02/08/2020 07:51

Ah echt I feel your pain. Same happened here though, the sunny weather with lockdown.

I can foresee curfews here around Xmas!

They're going to close the pubs I bet in a week or so.

Interesting article and I found it similarly frustrating. So much isnt being said re the reality of cleaning and money etc. Re the science, it feels like it's what so many have been saying for months but haven't been allowed to put in print.

Interesting that it states the opposite of what the numbers thread repeatedly says; that school closures have little impact. I'm fairly sure they've said that a few times. Even if its not the actual school it's self (though clearly is) the impact of more people travelling due to schools is a real impact.

I think their plan all along was to open pubs and holidays before the actual school hols, enough to stimulate the economy, and then clamp down a couple of weeks before they ended. They didn't bank on Leicester and areas of Manchester though.

It's going to be fucking dominoes in sept. Are we still taking bets on how long they can last? If we hobble to half term it'll be a miracle.

Although Japan understood earlier than many Western countries that the virus was more likely to spread through droplets in the air, and warned residents to avoid crowded, unventilated conditions, it wasn’t enough to change individual behavior as the restrictions were lifted. While people have continued to wear masks throughout the pandemic, the current infections have largely occurred in situations where face coverings aren’t typically worn, like group dining and drinking events.

How Japanese schools reopened: note face masks...

Hard luck, Echt. Just heard about Melbourne from my relative there.

NeurotrashWarrior · 02/08/2020 08:20

Well this was fucking illuminating. I'd love to see the uk placed on that graph. Next time someone bleats about Denmark, throw this back at them.

Predictably U4T have launched at that Guardian article blaming 'some unions' for blocking opening and calling for teachers to be their 'greatest allies'. I did wish The Guardian had the forethought to run a different headline. the teachers' fears and the NASUWT comments are based on the scientists' findings FFS.

You can spot them on FB btw by their cover photos of angelic blonde children hugging each other. They all look like studio shots of angelic (never BAME!) children.

I give it one more day of industrial espionage before I stop following them again!

Piggywaspushed · 02/08/2020 08:53

neuro the modelling ahs ALWAYS said that schools closures have the greatest impact : the shift was that at some point the modellers were convinced to rephrase this as 'less impact than previously thought'.

Piggywaspushed · 02/08/2020 08:59

I find it interesting that that article completely overlooks the UK, in fact most of Europe!

RigaBalsam · 02/08/2020 09:13

It is so frustrating there is no plan B then if course it out fault again as we are being paid.

Keepdistance · 02/08/2020 10:49

The data on outbreaks in schools etc vs hospital and workplace
Educational settings were about equal to workplaces (though obviously dont know the total cases).

If cleaning alone worked hospitals would never have had a problem as surely they bleach wear gloves etc.

Concerned about plans re the over 50s as it sounds a bit like not bother trying to control spread we will just hide the ones more likely to die.
Which would be good but

  • how many over 50 live alone
  • how many work
  • have schiol age kids

I guess it might be a swap on who is furloughed. Though would think the bill could be higher as they are older.
It is interestingly the same as the vaccine age.

KatherineOfGaunt · 02/08/2020 11:05

@Keepdistance What's this about over 50s? Seems I've missed something.

Appuskidu · 02/08/2020 11:19

It’s amazing that on that thread on the coronavirus board, about what you most want to see open, nearly everyone has said schools, but nobody seems to give a shit about making them safe?!

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 02/08/2020 11:38

It will create resentment between those who have young children and those that don’t.

Very illuminating. Some UK primary classes are up at 30:1 student:teacher ratio. But U4T or T4U won’t give a shiny shit about that

BelleSausage · 02/08/2020 12:00

@Appuskidu

Mumsnet is a bubble all of its own. I bet those people would be shocked if the question of pubs and restaurants vs schools was put to the wider public. I very much bet schools would not win out.

BelleSausage · 02/08/2020 12:02

I’ve just looked it up and the hospitality industry is the 4th largest employer in the country.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 02/08/2020 12:09

A lot of young people are employed in pubs and hospitality. Around my area there are lots of ‘older’ people who eat out a lot.

If pubs and restaurants go back into lockdown I reckon many will not reopen. But the close the pubs brigade want their rights and liberties put before anyone else.

OP posts:
Subordinateclause · 02/08/2020 12:24

I'd imagine it's more than 'some' primary classes at a 30:1 ratio, surely it's most? Or 27+:1 if not. I knew other countries had smaller classes but that graph is quite eye-opening as to how much better funded many of our European neighbours are.

Piggywaspushed · 02/08/2020 12:26

They don't want to acknowledge schools are unsafe because of three reasons

a)it's an inconvenient truth which they don't want to think about so prefer to talk about unions and cowardly teachers form their home offices
b) they believe the early research that children don't catch or spread it and don't want to hear that this might have moved on
c) they genuinely believe the government that schools are safe

there's also
d) they think teachers are dangerous militants who can't possibly be speaking sense

And a fair proportion of them, looking at Facebook are very right wing with a smattering of conspiracy theory libertarianism.

JulyBreeze · 02/08/2020 12:30

@KatherineOfGaunt a tweet that @Piggywaspushed posted last night suggesting that Boris might have "war gamed" a scenario of shielding all over 50s!

Piggywaspushed · 02/08/2020 12:34

I achieved peak T4U bingo on one page of that thread!!

Piggywaspushed · 02/08/2020 12:35

Twasn't me. I posted the Observer article. Twas rafa!

JulyBreeze · 02/08/2020 12:45

Sorry @Piggywaspushed!

Just searched and the tweet story has made its way into the press, and Robert Jenrick was asked about it this morning on Times Radio (??):

"Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick has described reports on plans to introduce more shielding for older people as "just speculation."

Speaking to Times Radio, he said: "You would expect the government to be considering all of the range of options that might be available.

"That's not something that is being actively considered." "

JulyBreeze · 02/08/2020 12:46

Sky say it's an idea of giving all 50-70 yr olds a risk rating and corresponding advice, which I guess is sensible although I wonder how it would be achieved and how employers would be expected to support the advice-'compliance'!

Piggywaspushed · 02/08/2020 12:50

It is never just speculation when it is in the ST and the Torygraph....
