You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to beat us with then please do so elsewhere and not in the staffroom.

Did that fucker seriously just say he has only heard of Rashford's campaign today!!??

It has been a campaign since lockdown began.

He really gives not one shit about education.

EducatingArti · 16/06/2020 17:24

I've made my own visualiser out of stuff I already had at home. My phone sits on the glass plate. When I am tutoring via Google hangouts or Zoom I can add my phone in as an extra 'person' an then the student can see what I am writing on the little whiteboard. It is better of course if they log in via a laptop rather than phone ( can I get them to do this ...? GAH!)
I tried it out for the first time on Monday. It worked ok and was useful.
If you could borrow 2 clamp stands from a science lab, you could clamp the picture frame between those which would be more elegant than my contraption band it would also mean that you could adjust the height which would help as different apps have different fields of vision from the camera.

I also wish he would stop saying 'kids', most specifically 'poor kids'.

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2020 17:27

I don't think it is Gav putting off appearing : I think he is being kept off.
Boris thought he had good news today, so he has bounded out like Tigger.

Unfortunately today, he also caused an uproar about FSM and DfID.

He actually referred to foreign leaders today as people 'who chop their opponents heads off' and then expect to get money from the 'cashpoint in the sky'.

TheHoneyBadger · 16/06/2020 17:31

You’re clever and wonderful aarti!!

MsAwesomeDragon · 16/06/2020 17:37

My visualiser is an older version of this one www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00U7LV402/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Aqp6EbH8X0QAV?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 The maths department bought us one each a few years ago, specifically for use in demonstrating how to use a protractor and a pair of compasses because none of the digital ones or big board ones look like the equipment the kids have in front of them. I use it a lot in the classroom to demonstrate anything to do with shapes really. It's not brilliant quality in terms of video resolution and focus, but it's better than nothing, or clamping my phone to a lamp, which is what I used to do before I was allowed my visualiser.

EducatingArti · 16/06/2020 17:37

Thank you Honey Badger.
It was partly due to a conversation with s very techy neighbour so not entirely my own idea. I put together all the bits though and it has cost me £0

That’s my kind of price range Grin
MsAwesomeDragon · 16/06/2020 17:43

@EducatingArti that is a wonderful contraption!!! I love it!! I think I might try to build one. I've got plenty of art straws and lollipop sticks that we ordered for activities day which won't be happening. They would build a wonderful visualiser contraption, and my phone would be better quality video than the crappy webcam on my "visualiser" which is actually this exact camera www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0049TQQ1A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_Jvp6EbE2TFB75?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

EducatingArti · 16/06/2020 17:47

The wooden skewers and lolly sticks were all I had to make the frame the right height. The aluminium base is a small camping table I had. The glass is a spare cheap picture frame I happened to have in a cupboard. I also used a glue gun and a lot of blutac!

TheHoneyBadger · 16/06/2020 17:53

Blue Peter badge on it’s way

Appuskidu · 16/06/2020 17:54

No summer schools announcement then?!

I thought that would happen on Boris’s one day a week in the office.

CarrieBlue · 16/06/2020 18:01

I might nick the ripple tank to convert to a visualiser!

EducatingArti · 16/06/2020 18:01

I always wanted a Blue Peter badge and enters competitions etc, but never won one!

ChloeDecker · 16/06/2020 18:15

I was lucky enough to appear on Blue Peter (in 1991 I think!?) and got a Blue Peter badge from that and I still have it Grin
Yvette Fielding was part of the segment but hid behind her newspaper during most of breaks between filming!

EducatingArti · 16/06/2020 18:22

What did you do on the programme ChloeDecker?

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2020 18:33

Those of you who already have year 10s or 12s in, what is happening with the ones who choose not to attend?

ChloeDecker · 16/06/2020 18:33

Don’t laugh EducatingArti but it was a ‘report’ on the Pop Art exhibition at I think the National Gallery at the time! A very ‘cultured’ 10 year old! Grin

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2020 18:34

Do we think Boris's Big Announcement was actually the Summer Food and Activities Scheme?

ChloeDecker · 16/06/2020 18:35

We’ve been lucky and most of our daily ‘25%’ have been in bar one of two. I don’t think much has happened bar just assuming they do the remote learning set. They can’t be moved to different sessions in the future as they are all full.
ohthegoats · 16/06/2020 18:36

@EducatingArti

Same here on the 'visualiser' front. This is my child using the set up for stop motion, but 2 sticks a pile of boxes and cook books. Eventually I went and fetched my actual visualiser.

Loving the ingenuity of the visualisers!

@Piggywaspushed

Goodness knows. Basically we've been told we can't teach any new content, give any handouts/photocopying or provide anything that might disadvantage those who choose not to attend.

I'm in on Friday for first Y10 session - altogether approx 30% of our cohort have chosen to come in for one single session before end of term - which obviously I have to keep repeating for small groups. 2/3 are not coming in at all. Same with Y12.

I have an hour where I'm probably gonna look at them and say...All-righttttt??? like Catherine Tate used to as Lauren...

Criticisms will be met with Am I bovvered?...

I was basically planning on a group chat on what we've covered, how they've done, what they are struggling with, what teaching has worked well - what they need? I'll take notes and email out to all with suggestions for where to go next.

It does feel like an utter waste of time...

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2020 18:48

hmmm chloe. We don't seem to be this organised....

EducatingArti · 16/06/2020 18:50

I'm loving the aplomb needed to carry off a teddy onsie and witches hat combo!
Wow you were a cultured 10 year old ChloeDecker!
