You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to beat us with then please do so elsewhere and not in the staffroom.

@BlessYourCottonSocks your school’s set up sounds as if it would have been better to not have any pupils in, if you can’t cover any new topics etc

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2020 18:52

ineed it sounds more thorough and organised than mine!!

FrippEnos · 16/06/2020 18:56

Piggywaspushed

We have a vulnerable cohort in, and then the rest of the yr in 1/4 at a time.

We are expected to keep writing work for the rest and chase.

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2020 19:00

OK. We are expected to teach those in and those at home simultaneously.

MsAwesomeDragon · 16/06/2020 19:00

For our year 12 I have 10/16 coming in. The 6 at home will be sent a video of my explanation and told which exercise to do. They can then email me with any problems and I will reply when I'm not busy.

For year 10, I'm expected to set 2 lessons of remote learning each week. The pupils who come in for their sessions will not be expected to complete the remote learning that week but will get 4 lessons in school with me (they're in for a full week). Anyone not in school will just complete the remote learning I've set, or not, as they choose.

Absolutely! I agree. Smile.

They offered Y10/Y12 a one day face to face session with teachers as per (original) government announcement. Head/SLT (bless 'em) are not convinced it is safe to run 'proper' school days of lessons for these year groups and are being extremely cautious. We also have a high BAME population and vulnerable staff.

I can't cover new topics in a one off session that only about 1/3 of kids will come to. I suspect the only reason we are in at all is to tick Boris' box of 'some' contact.

BlessYourCottonSocks · 16/06/2020 19:02

We're still setting all remote learning, by the way. So all students have that to do, whether they are in or not.

ohthegoats · 16/06/2020 19:03

Are any of you guys SLT and started looking at September yet?

Same here! I’m worried once some cotton on to that they will stop turning up!
StrawberryJam200 · 16/06/2020 19:41

Just received this by email from my MP (v much a Boris supporter) to whom I'd petitioned re free school meals. Interestingly he adds this:

"Beyond that, it remains our intention to get all pupils back into school in September, but I should add that the Department for Education’s Holiday Activities & Food (HAF) programme will also be running this summer at a cost of £9 million, which will benefit thousands of disadvantaged children. The HAF scheme arranges provision in a range of local settings, including school premises."

tadjennyp · 16/06/2020 19:51

Dare we ask if schools know about this provision if their premises are involved?

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2020 19:54

This is clearly the Big Plan, isn't it??

I read £63 m somewhere??

SallyLovesCheese · 16/06/2020 19:56

Yes, the school I work in have done PPA/leadership time cover timetable, duty rotas etc.

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2020 19:59

This is the HAF programme which also ran in 2018/19. I think the organisations that bid for it might have been wondering whether it was going ahead this year. It is NOT new and yet it is being spoken of as if it is. How disingenuous.

The Holiday Activities and Food scheme follows successful programmes in 2018 and 2019, which saw charities and community groups provide meals and activities such as football, play sessions and cooking classes for children across the country. Around 18,000 children benefited in 2018, and the programme was expanded in 2019, with around 50,000 children enjoying this free holiday provision this year. The Department launched a recruitment process to find co-ordinators to run similar programmes in 2020.
Through these breakfast and holiday programmes, parents will also have access to information so that they can learn how best to provide their children with healthy food, as an additional new strand of our overall provision next year

tadjennyp · 16/06/2020 20:06

They are cheeky bastards, aren't they?

Appuskidu · 16/06/2020 20:10

I wonder how many people who might usually be involved with volunteering for charities and community groups are currently vulnerable/shielding?

MsAwesomeDragon · 16/06/2020 20:17

I usually volunteer with Brownies, and we were going to have a pack holiday this year for the first time. That won't be going ahead, obviously. I'm vulnerable, so while I'm making the choice to go in to school, I won't be volunteering to run sessions with children over the summer. I'll do some stuff with my dd and her friends but nothing as a formal volunteering role.

£9 million?! Sorry, but is that all for the whole country for all those children?! Shameful!
Appuskidu · 16/06/2020 20:39

Christ, the teacher bashers are out en masse this evening Angry

MrsHerculePoirot · 16/06/2020 20:40

@Piggywaspushed

Those of you who already have year 10s or 12s in, what is happening with the ones who choose not to attend?
We are just still setting work, but have a list of who is in and know to recognise they will complete less work for our subject specifically!
MrsHerculePoirot · 16/06/2020 20:43

Can anyone here help me with a couple of quick teams questions?

  1. I'm trying to use classnotebook and have added a page to the content library. Can I now add it to their individual notebooks, or do they have to be instructed to do this? If so can they easily do it during a live meeting/lesson? Will it be useful?

  2. Any secondary maths specific - any tips on how to get students to share their written work with you other than holding up to screen or some way of taking a picture and sharing it with you?

MrsHerculePoirot · 16/06/2020 20:44

Also sorry, someone asked about recording a screen - someone has recommended an app to me called 'loom' where you can record your screen but it records you also and you appear in a small circle on the bottom of the screen. When you finish it sends you a link which is what you can then use to share the recorded video.

Sureitwillbegrand · 16/06/2020 20:57

We have 1/4 of Y10's in for half a day each week. One week eng/maths/science the next week options, each subject will get approx 2.5 hours in total before summer.
I am setting work online as normal it was already planned so not changing it and it is not hours of work so they can cope, no guidance from SLT regarding this though?
I printed out what I needed for in school lesson made packs and then put in quarantine for a week 😂. Maths so a mix of activities. I have also added all the resources to the google classroom for those who did not turn up. Activities were general tasks as not fully in teaching groups and all groups doing same tasks(foundation/higher)
Not sure what we are going to do for session 2 yet.

EducatingArti · 16/06/2020 20:58

One of my maths students is photographing her maths work written in an A4 pad. She uploads it into teams somewhere and her teacher is able to mark it by annotating the photograph. No idea how though!
