Continuing the saga of Sussex PR disasters.

Prince Philip was only 9 when his mum had a severe mental breakdown and was removed to a sanatorium.
And look how he turned out!

Successful Naval career
The late Queen's strength and stay all those years
Founder member of the WWF
Initiated an extensive tree planting programme at Windsor and Sandringham
Founder of the DofE awards scheme
An enormous range of interests

And never, ever whinged about how hard done by he was.

I read this obit of Philip when he died and I think it's a good balanced account of his less shining moments but also of his background and coping with the bleakness of his early life. It made me feel a level of respect for what he dealt with.

I’d add to your list the fact that he came out of Dartmouth Naval College as on of the top cadets of his year, if nothing THE top. He loved his job with a passion but gave it up to be consort to the Queen.

Personally I think that’s 2 more points in his favour. It also helps us to understand why he occasionally got frustrated and tetchy.

Yes, George VI was only 56, he could have lived another 15 years.

It was thought Philip could have achieved high rank in the Navy, so it's not as if he'd gone as far as he could before he had to quit.
