Buckingham Palace have said they won't be commenting further on the book. But I expect plenty of others will be and it's not even published yet so I started this second thread. I really liked Diana and thought she got treated shabbily by Charles. But really writing a book of gripes 30 years later is not on imho. I noticed on the news Harry declined to comment on it. Sensible decision for once.

The picture of Harry in the article just breaks your heart.

William was 15, why is there never any sympathy for him?

bingobangs · 18/09/2026 18:47

@CoffeeCantataare you saying people weren’t angry with the Royals?

i feel sorry for both of them but Harry looks like a child and stands out.

How can you get so much so wrong! The Queen wanted to keep the Princes at Balmoral but the baying mob, whipped up by the press, demanded they all return to London. T Blair forced the Queen to go along with this.

It was horrible, but it wasn’t the RF’s doing.

The baying mob was the British people, horrified by Diana’s tragic early death and by what many saw as the Royal Family’s heartless treatment of her, both in life and in death. For all their faults, I would rather spend a lifetime in their company than an hour with the entitled pricks who presided over her fate.

The whole HRH thing is ridiculous. Why did she care about that so much? Just a silly title

Yeah - Charles Spencer’s interview is pretty convincing.

Ranting is hardly going to help his case is it? I For what it's worth it seems obvious that Charles S believes what he is saying, but that doesn't mean he is accurately recalling the conversation. He says in the clip that he told his family and friends at the time what Charles said. If they come forward then I will believe he it's recalling accurately but I will still give everyone involved some grace because it was a really stressful time and not everyone reacts well under pressure.

Telecone · 18/09/2026 18:52

Spencer is coming across as a money grabbing shit stirrer. He couldn't care less about the effect it has on his nephews and wider family.

How cruel to dredge up heated words said during time of grief. And I speak as someone who actually went to Kensington Palace to lay flowers when Diana died.

Livelovebehappy · 18/09/2026 18:52

The timing of the book seems a bit coincidental - all this which has been kicking off with Harry, escalating during this last year, suggests that the Earl may also be doing the book to try balance out the flack Harry is getting with some truths about Charles’ behaviour. I’m guessing Harry has known from the start what the book was going to contain, and might even have contributed to it in some way.

Well that's a revealing bit of prose.

Poor little Harry, undermining William's equal grief, making Charles out to be uncaring compared to Philip, centreing himself in everything that was happening, yeah that's the writing of a man who is a reliable witness (sarcasm).

I think it all sounds entirely believable and he was bound to centre on himself because he’s talking about his personal experience.

So the book is now Harry’s fault too 🙄

Absolutely this! I remember it very well and how disgusted lots of us felt about the tasteless bullying of the Royal Family by the hysterical mob and idiotic Tony Blair. There was no thought for the bereaved children at all from the baying hordes and TB was just desperate to be seen as the mediator who got the Queen to return (with the boys).

Harry looks like a younger brother, which he was. But William still lost his mother too, reading Charles S it seems like even his uncle gave all his sympathy to shorter Harry. Poor William, without the growth spurt maybe he would have got the empathy that everyone always offers Harry.

Yes it would have been just as hard for William.

Tony Blair just wanted the focus on him as mediator, he's the one who coined the People's Princess rubbish which just fanned the flames. Diana did a lot of good and wasn't perfect, but at that point she wasn't the People's Princess.

Its about her life isn’t is as told by him? how does one not centre themselves in that scenario 😆

A real biographer doesn't centre themselves. From what everyone is saying he usually writes for history books. It seems emotions have taken over with this one.

bingobangs · 18/09/2026 19:01

The blurb says the below

“In Swan Song, Charles Spencer provides the most intimate, loving and honest portrait yet of his sister.”

I would take from that it’s a fairly personal account but that’s just me.

But then I wouldn’t curtsy to anyone.

We are in special case uncharted territory here and he loved Diana far more than her royal husband did and he has earned the right to say his piece.

To be fair, the only bits I’ve read so far were about what happened after her death - so I think that helps explain why it doesn’t centre on her experience of the events.

The picture of Harry in the article just breaks your heart.

Weird that you couldn't care less about Diana's other son losing his mother.

It breaks my heart because it's terrible when any child loses his or her mother young, especially in a stupid accident. The fact that Diana's children walked behind their mother's coffin doesn't particularly break my heart. I went to my mother's funeral (very much as an adult, thankfully) and every single second of it was like a freakish out-of-body experience. There's no right way to bury your mother that isn't horrendous. The whole thing about Harry (apparently Diana had only one son, in the minds of some) walking behind his mother's coffin has been blown out of all proportion. If Harry and William hadn't walked behind their mother's coffin - alongside their father, grandfather and uncle - then something else would have been the issue that those with an agenda would have jumped upon. Probably there would have been some fuss about how William and Harry had been sidelined at their mother's funeral and weren't allowed to honour her publicly. It's all a load of nonsense.

bingobangs · 18/09/2026 19:04

I think it’s awful they had to walk in front of thousands of people crying etc, that isn’t normal.
