Buckingham Palace have said they won't be commenting further on the book. But I expect plenty of others will be and it's not even published yet so I started this second thread. I really liked Diana and thought she got treated shabbily by Charles. But really writing a book of gripes 30 years later is not on imho. I noticed on the news Harry declined to comment on it. Sensible decision for once.

Because they were early, they arrived before William and Kate so C and C had to wait for their arrival and it was probably easier all round to wait in the carriage.

Ah yes, I remember now....bad planning by someone.....

It shows and intemperate nature which along with other occasional outbursts adds up to an angry, impatient person.

No, it doesn't. It shows someone perhaps nervous and anxious at the fact he's about to be crowned king in Westminster Abbey in front of hundreds of visiting foreign dignitaries, and which is being transmitted live to the whole nation and the whole world. That's a pretty stressful situation I'd think, so I'd cut him some slack for saying something as incredibly innocuous as "we can never be on time", which is a pretty odd thing to try to claim someone has a personality flaw for saying.

Richard Kay of the Mail, who knows Spencer well, says that he would have been taking notes because he had such a major role in the funeral and would naturally have wanted to make sure he didn't miss anything. More importantly, Kay actually saw him taking notes at the time it was simply what Spencer did, having already been a journalist for ten years. Kay also has little obvious reason to take Spencer's side in this dispute; equally, there is no obvious reason for him to take Charles's side. He is essentially reporting what he observed. So, on the balance of probabilities, unless we are to believe that Spencer is deliberately lying, I think it is reasonable to regard his recollection as a fairly credible account of what actually happened.

Why was he there when CS got the phone call? Wasn’t CS in South Africa

Most likely right. I suspect that neither Cor D could give each other, what either needed tbh, both damaged by their upbringing imo. Both needy, but only one gets the blame, as was older. I feel sorry for both. Had Charles been allowed to marry Camilla, from the start and Diana had married a wealthy farmer, they would all have been a lot better off. But I think Camilla was in love with APB so who knows?

I agree. I find the lack of nuanced understanding of the situation they were both in very callous and harsh.

People love treating it as a simple Good Diana, Evil Charles scenario - but it was a complex human situation and both sides deserve understanding.

But I imagine royals sitting in a carriage for many minutes could be a security nightmare since they need to get inside the building - it they’re sitting ducks.

StartupRepair · 19/09/2026 08:42

I think Charles W was referring to the weeping masses. Rest assured, Diana will be forgotten (they will move onto the next thing). It is the only interpretation that makes sense.

CoffeeCantata · 19/09/2026 06:26

This whole issue is unresolvable because if you are a Diana worshipper and hate KC, you’ll believe Earl Spencer is telling it how it was.

If you roll your eyes at the sanctification of a very flawed woman and feel the situation is more nuanced, you’ll be more sceptical - and particularly if you’ve followed the very dodgy romantic career of Spencer over the last 30+ years!

Pick a side, basically!😂

Spencer’s marriages are a complete non sequitur

Really grasping at straws there

Spencer is believed. He is believed worldwide . He is interviewed on Sunday on the BBC and the clip I’ve seen will convince any one who is undecided

Yes the book reveals a horrible monstrous nasty thing Charles said about the mother of his children .
Yes the rumour that Charles is gay or bi is referred to.

However the Windsors have lied about far far worse
They have covered up for Andrew and Epstein - and publicly stated that Virginia was a liar when they’d known about Epstein for decades!

The entire Windsor facade is cover up and lies .
This is another little bit of truth revealed .

That's why I made the comment about bad planning by someone.

I was watching some of this on TV on the day and was surprised by the way that hiccup in timing was handled......

I agree. If he did say it that's what he meant in a cynical sort of way. Meaning all this furore and weeping and flowers by the masses will be forgotten.

He said
‘rest assured she’ll be forgotten soon enough’

We know what he meant .
She hasn’t even been buried at that point. This was the mother of his children.

And how wrong he was

No, we don't know what he said or what was meant.

Charitably, the most we can say is that we know what Charles Spencer thinks he heard and how he understands it many years later.

'Pengate' looked like bad planning too - all that clutter on a tiny table - who thought that was a good idea - clear the table of everything but the huge ledger and pass the pen over when needed

And there are letters where he "offers" her the Garden House and then writes again and takes the offer back. I'll believe the letters written by Spencer over anything else.

But feel free to do you boo!

So The Times newspaper is lying in their apology about the offers of a number of other properties including Wormleighton Manor?

  1. Charles rushed out a misjudged attempt a smear
  2. Charles did not deny saying it .

Two things can be true - the letters show CS withdrawing an offer of a home and talking about offering properties off the estate.

The offers were farmhouses - probably isolated and which hadn't been lived in for yonks - that Spencer wanted Diana to pay rent for. She wanted to stay at Althorp, he at first said yes then told her he couldn't stay.

The fact Diana didn't end up staying and paying rent at Spencer's properties in her time of need shows just how inappropriate what he offered her was. While technically he offered her somewhere to stay (to rent, actually) his offer was crap, which is why she didn't stay at any of Earl Spencer's properties (of course, as a girl she couldn't inherit any of the family properties, they all went to him).

Diana was reportedly not even talking to Spencer at the time of her death, so that shows what she thought of him and his offers of "assistance".

Yes, it's becoming more obvious, isnt it. We do get fed a pack of lies .

Roxring · 19/09/2026 09:09

The marriage was doomed from day 1, neither of them wanted to marry the other but both were forced into it. Doomed marriages generally bring out the worst in each other.

I don’t believe a word of what Charles Spencer is writing, he is a vindictive misogynistic and nasty man. He was absolutely horrible to Diana and all these claims that because he won a defamation case exonerates him, is rubbish. The proof is there, Diana wanted to have a bolthole on the Althorp estate proper for her and the boy’s, and after he initially was prepared to rent it to her, he then pulled the rug from under her feet. It’s no wonder poor Diana struggled, she had no one in her corner.

When you read any of the details of his divorce from his first wife, it’s quite obvious he was a nasty uncaring husband, his subsequent marriage breakups all track the same. Victoria Lockwood claimed he uprooted her and their kids to South Africa under false pretenses so he could be closer to his mistress, his mistress supported Victoria and her husband even sued Charles Spencer.

No one even knows how true that is, it was a lip reader who claimed he said it and she wasn’t even present, she was reading it from a TV screen.

But if this was the context the Palace also won’t admit it will they because that is also not a good optic.

Mabe because they don't know what contemporaneous notes/record that he may have and they don;t want to be caught out making a blatant lie ?
