Royal row between King Charles and Earl Spencer 2

Buckingham Palace have said they won't be commenting further on the book. But I expect plenty of others will be and it's not even published yet so I started this second thread. I really liked Diana and thought she got treated shabbily by Charles. But really writing a book of gripes 30 years later is not on imho. I noticed on the news Harry declined to comment on it. Sensible decision for once.

No he did not. See below.

I stand before you today the representative of a family in grief, in a country in mourning before a world in shock.
"We are all united not only in our desire to pay our respects to Diana but rather in our need to do so. For such was her extraordinary appeal that the tens of millions of people taking part in this service all over the world via television and radio who never actually met her, feel that they too lost someone close to them in the early hours of Sunday morning. It is a more remarkable tribute to Diana than I can ever hope to offer her today.
"No Need for Royal Title"
"Diana was the very essence of compassion, of duty, of style, of beauty. All over the world she was a symbol of selfless humanity. All over the world, a standard bearer for the rights of the truly downtrodden, a very British girl who transcended nationality. Someone with a natural nobility who was classless and who proved in the last year that she needed no royal title to continue to generate her particular brand of magic.
"Today is our chance to say thank you for the way you brightened our lives, even though God granted you but half a life. We will all feel cheated always that you were taken from us so young and yet we must learn to be grateful that you came along at all. Only now that you are gone do we truly appreciate what we are now without and we want you to know that life without you is very, very difficult.
"We have all despaired at our loss over the past week and only the strength of the message you gave us through your years of giving has afforded us the strength to move forward.
"Great Gift of Intuition"
"There is a temptation to rush to canonise your memory, there is no need to do so. You stand tall enough as a human being of unique qualities not to need to be seen as a saint. Indeed to sanctify your memory would be to miss out on the very core of your being, your wonderfully mischievous sense of humour with a laugh that bent you double.
"Your joy for life transmitted where ever you took your smile and the sparkle in those unforgettable eyes. Your boundless energy which you could barely contain.
"But your greatest gift was your intuition and it was a gift you used wisely. This is what underpinned all your other wonderful attributes and if we look to analyse what it was about you that had such a wide appeal we find it in your instinctive feel for what was really important in all our lives.
"Without your God-given sensitivity we would be immersed in greater ignorance at the anguish of Aids and HIV sufferers, the plight of the homeless, the isolation of lepers, the random destruction of landmines.

"Innermost Feelings of Suffering"
"Diana explained to me once that it was her innermost feelings of suffering that made it possible for her to connect with her constituency of the rejected.
"And here we come to another truth about her. For all the status, the glamour, the applause, Diana remained throughout a very insecure person at heart, almost childlike in her desire to do good for others so she could release herself from deep feelings of unworthiness of which her eating disorders were merely a symptom.
"The world sensed this part of her character and cherished her for her vulnerability whilst admiring her for her honesty.
"The last time I saw Diana was on July 1, her birthday in London, when typically she was not taking time to celebrate her special day with friends but was guest of honour at a special charity fundraising evening. She sparkled of course, but I would rather cherish the days I spent with her in March when she came to visit me and my children in our home in South Africa. I am proud of the fact apart from when she was on display meeting President Mandela we managed to contrive to stop the ever-present paparazzi from getting a single picture of her - that meant a lot to her.
"These were days I will always treasure. It was as if we had been transported back to our childhood when we spent such an enormous amount of time together - the two youngest in the family.
"Fundamentally she had not changed at all from the big sister who mothered me as a baby, fought with me at school and endured those long train journeys between our parents' homes with me at weekends.
"It is a tribute to her level-headedness and strength that despite the most bizarre-like life imaginable after her childhood, she remained intact, true to herself.
"Diana's Goodness Threatened the Media"
"There is no doubt that she was looking for a new direction in her life at this time. She talked endlessly of getting away from England, mainly because of the treatment that she received at the hands of the newspapers. I don't think she ever understood why her genuinely good intentions were sneered at by the media, why there appeared to be a permanent quest on their behalf to bring her down. It is baffling.
"My own and only explanation is that genuine goodness is threatening to those at the opposite end of the moral spectrum. It is a point to remember that of all the ironies about Diana, perhaps the greatest was this - a girl given the name of the ancient goddess of hunting was, in the end, the most hunted person of the modern age.
"She would want us today to pledge ourselves to protecting her beloved boys William and Harry from a similar fate and I do this here Diana on your behalf. We will not allow them to suffer the anguish that used regularly to drive you to tearful despair.
"Blood Family Will Protect Sons"
"And beyond that, on behalf of your mother and sisters, I pledge that we, your blood family, will do all we can to continue the imaginative way in which you were steering these two exceptional young men so that their souls are not simply immersed by duty and tradition but can sing openly as you planned.
"We fully respect the heritage into which they have both been born and will always respect and encourage them in their royal role but we, like you, recognise the need for them to experience as many different aspects of life as possible to arm them spiritually and emotionally for the years ahead. I know you would have expected nothing less from us.
"William and Harry, we all cared desperately for you today. We are all chewed up with the sadness at the loss of a woman who was not even our mother. How great your suffering is, we cannot even imagine.
"I would like to end by thanking God for the small mercies he has shown us at this dreadful time. For taking Diana at her most beautiful and radiant and when she had joy in her private life. Above all we give thanks for the life of a woman I am so proud to be able to call my sister, the unique, the complex, the extraordinary and irreplaceable Diana whose beauty, both internal and external, will never be extinguished from our minds."

RealVideo RealAudio

You didn't need to write it, I remember it all. I watched it at the time and I saw it replayed countless times. :).

If you remember from the time: The part that was a dig at the Royal Family
was that the Earl said "we, your blood family will look after William and Harry'

'Blood family' purposefully excludes the Royal family.

Paul burelll, dianas butler wrote in hai book that after the funeral, they all went to earl Spencer's house. Prince Charles too. When earl Spencer's funeral speech came on the TV, paul Burrell wrote that prince Charles stood up and said that he was leaving.

"We will forget Diana soon enough."

I watched Emily Maitlis' interview with CS this evening. I don't know whether KC made the above statement or not but I'm inclined to believe he didn't. My reasoning is based on CS's description of his reaction to what would have been an incredibly nasty and cruel thing to say about Diana, in the immediate aftermath of her untimely death, when CS and his family no doubt were in deep shock and emotions would be running high.

According to CS his response was:
"I can't believe you just said that" and he hung up.

Really - is that all? So CS wasn't incandescent with rage? He didn't swear? He didn't give KC a mouthful for disrespecting his late sister in such an unkind way? No, I'm not buying it.

I think i might react like that...just not want to carry on the conversation..

Flufffluff11 · 18/09/2026 21:11

"The palace released a statement because Charles Spencer is spouting incendiary allegations. Why shouldn't they counter them"

When Harry wrote a book, and in the book he was nasty about his father AND brother, the palace didn't release any statements.

I think they know this book is likely to do more damage, which is why they have released a statement

Edited

They did release a statement over the Oprah interview which I think was because the interview was objectively more damaging than the book, with its accusations of racism. Maybe because the book was more about internal family dynamics?

Daygloboo · 18/09/2026 21:39

MrsLeonFarrell · 18/09/2026 21:30

It depends on whether he actually said those words or something that was interpreted as those words. I'm guessing that he didn't say that and that Charles S either misheard or misremembered, hence why he needs some grace extended.

If Charles S really told his family and friends what was said at the time why isn't anyone coming forward to back him up? 30 years if a really long time to accurately recall conversations undertaken at a time of heightened emotion. I doubt anyone can remember exactly what was said.

Heightened emotion.....heightened memory .I know this can be true from experiences in my own life. !!!

Flufffluff11 · 18/09/2026 21:42

Well I don't hate king Charles. I'm not even surprised by much of it.

He doesn't sound worse than a lot of my own family. Men in my family have had affairs, bad divorces etc.

I do feel sad for Diana as she was kind of trapped in a lot of ways

OneLilacHedgehog · 18/09/2026 21:43

MrsLeonFarrell · 18/09/2026 21:32

Do you really believe people were looking after William and not Harry? He says earlier that William was coping better too. I doubt either was coping but for some reason all his sympathy is focused on Harry. Why? It's strange that Charles S is focusing on one nephew and not the other.

The boys spent two weeks with their father and then returned to boarding school. Maybe there was better pastoral care for William in his house? Certainly the care for each of them would have been largely at boarding school.

MurphysColeslaw · 18/09/2026 21:43

I think they were both trapped.
She fitted the victim profile better than he did though.

AcquadiP · 18/09/2026 21:43

Flufffluff11 · 18/09/2026 21:27

Well Earl Spencer did give the Royal Family a mouthful at Diana's funeral. He seemed to be very angry with the Royal Family at the time. Obviously arguments were going on

Yes, I remember his speech very well -including the very pointed reference to her losing HRH title after divorce - but his speech made no reference to keeping her memory alive when others might prefer for her to be forgotten. He clearly had an axe to grind so why leave it out?

It would have gone nicely into the section where he referred to her blood family.

But you thought, nay, you were adamant the boys were at school when Diana died

Those who loved Diana will love her son King William too

Not necessarily

I apologised a few minutes later at getting this wrong and posted that they were in Balmoral on their summer holiday with Charles in his custody time.

I notice you have not had a go a the many people repeating lies about Charles Spencer. It's just me you want to have a go at.

She's been dead nearly 30 years. The people who ' loved Diana' will be pretty elderly when William is King.

Heightened emotion.....heightened memory .I know this can be true from experiences in my own life. !!!

But that doesn't entail that the memory is accurate. Our brains can revisit memories more often if they're traumatic, but what you remember is overwritten by the latest time you remember it. And that can be rewritten by your changing emotions about the event.

This isn't something you can argue your way out of, it's basic human brain function. Memories simply do not work in the way some people.in this thread are claiming.

Memories are emphatically not photographs or films. They change. And this is a subjective memory of a charged moment where he couldn't even see his face.

It wouldn't pass much muster as a historical source.

I'm dealing with a situation at work where a woman alleges that she had a traumatic conversation with a colleague and told a third party. But they followed up the conversation with specific written examples of her bad relationship with this colleague, and none of those emails exchanges reference anything like she described. Does that mean she never had that conversation? No. It could have taken place another time. But she is torturing herself with the obsession that we are lying about the situation and manufacturing emails that she wrote herself immediately after the conversation that contradict what she now "remembers" happened.

BunnyBunbunbun · 18/09/2026 20:09

Do you believe Earl Spencer? He only seems to have remembered all this 30 years later. It almost contradicts the things he's said in the past.

I’ve had things said in corporate meetings, took a note verbatim at the time, checked understanding only for the person even when its been said in front of witnesses to later deny all. Not everyone with power is worthy of it. CS has never forgotten. Same as the most hurtful things said to us all, I remember those statements clearly. Why would you forget? It’s shocking and all that’s changed is CS has now shared it now publicly. Good on him I say, he likely knew half of Joe Public be too daft to believe him. He knows the truth though and unlike the Andrew interview comes across as entirely credible.

Flufffluff11 · 18/09/2026 22:16

I feel sad for diana because charles was totally in love with someone else when he married diana.

Earl Spencer has also said that Charled told Diana before he married her that 'he was happy to marry her but he didn't love her'

Then he hardly bothered about William and Harry for years. And he moved to S Africa iirc. So I'm not paying much attention to what he's saying. But it's annoyed me that he's decided to cause trouble now.

I mean the upper classes are notoriously cold, unemotional and uncaring. They are trained to be from a young age.

Harry has also said that king Charles was not a great caring parent

Charles also said that Diana's father said it was too late to pull out from the wedding to Charles; however Diana said her self that it was her sister that made that comment to her.

What do you think about CS selling Diana's eulogy?

It doesn't particularly bother me. Prince Harry's sold a book
