Royal row between King Charles and Earl Spencer

Buckingham Palace said they don't usually comment but they can't stay silent. Apparently Prince Charles said at the time of Diana's death rest assured we'll forget her soon enough. Which is pretty horrendous. Charles has more or less said grief had clouded Earl Spencer's judgement and memory.

I don't know why he has waited nearly 30 years to come out with this.

No idea because I wasn't there, but something about Charles Spencer gives me the ick. I don't automatically believe this happened just because he says so.

Unexpectedlhereagain · 16/09/2026 23:13

King Charles gives me the creeps. He was busy screwing Camilla when Diana died and before, come to think of it. Nasty adulterous, lying man.

Enko · 16/09/2026 23:13

While.we have often been told King Charles is poor at choosing his words I personally doubt this happened. KC was brought up with formalities and manners and he would know not to say such a thing. I suspect what he said was rest assured we won't forget her anytime soon. Or words to that effect and Charles Spencer isheard or similar.

Also I agree with @FullLondonEye .... just something about that man.

They had been seperated 4 almost 5 years when she died. He was a single man and could sleep with anyone he wanted (with consent off course)

In the marriage I think it is well known from their own interviews that they both cheated.

And Charles Spencer is hardly a model for sexual continence either. I believe it is documented at this point that both Charles and Diana were adulterous in the legal sense of the word but I don't think we can ever know the exact truth of the details.

RhannionKPSS · 16/09/2026 23:31

Can’t stand either of the Charles, however I don’t think Charles the king said that

OneLilacHedgehog · 16/09/2026 23:46

Nobody here will believe this, simply because they support whatever the royal family do.
Personally I remember when Diana died and how the royals were towards early spencer at the time, so I believe it.

Also old enough to remember and at the time was anti Charles however I still do not believe he would have said this.

I do not support whatever tbe royal family do btw. Doesnt mean I dont at times support some stuff some of them do. A bit like in real life we agree with some things and not with others .

OneLilacHedgehog · 17/09/2026 00:04

I am not anti Charles. Being anti a stranger is pretty juvenile.
It is who you believe, and I remember how badly earl Spencer was treated by the royals. So yes I can imagine Charles saying this in retaliation to earl.

Yet had a tantrum over a pen, which was on film

I’m so not so polite

And shouts at and treats his gardeners so badly that 11 out of 12 quit in one year.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 17/09/2026 01:39

I don't know if Charles made those comments or not. It seems unlikely, but it is possible. And we don't really know who he is when the cameras are switched off.

But whether he made that comment or not, I have to question the motivations of an uncle who would share that kind of thing in public with so very little care for the feelings of his nephews.

There are some things which are better not aired in public, and this is one of them. Diana's sons should not have to deal with these headlines. Some matters should be discussed in private or not at all. But Earl Spencer has a book to sell, and it seems that he has put that above any respect for the feelings of his dead sister's children.

CostcoFanofThree · 17/09/2026 01:56

I could easily imagine it being said by someone, you certainly got the impression they found her an annoyance.

Agree.

The unquestioning deference toward the RF and the refusal to believe any ill of Charles is puzzling.

He went ahead with a sham of a marriage and dragged two babies into it.

The entire (inbred) family are emotionally illiterate, raised by nannies and other servants because their parents' priorities lay elsewhere.

Not this same old tripe again ?

bingobangs · 17/09/2026 03:41

I think it’s shocking W&H had to do that walk, who made that decision? Don’t BP normally comment but through “sources” that brief the press?

ElefantAndCastle · 17/09/2026 03:47

We will never know. But The Earl wants to make money...

gishgalloping · 17/09/2026 03:49

By all accounts Charles and Diana were on good terms before her death. He flew to Paris to bring her body home. He knew better than anyone how enormous her fame was. The family were forced to return to London from Balmoral because of the huge public reaction. It just doesn't seem likely to me that Charles said those words and I question why Charles Spencer would publish it knowing how painful it would be for William and (probably) Harry.

hattie43 · 17/09/2026 05:47

I don’t believe it . Charles is a sensitive man and earl Spencer is a much raker. Why wait 30 years to write a book , he needs the money to pay for all those ex wives ??? How is it helpful to William and Harry to read that supposed statement by their father.

A muck raker? Charles Spencer has written some rather good history books actually.

And I don’t think it’s beyond the realms of possibility that the then Prince Charles said what he did.

He’s known to have a temper and doesn’t like people saying no to him by all accounts.

And at the time, Diana’s death was personally calamitous for Charles because a lot of blame was directed at him in the aftermath and of course it was pretty bad news for his relationship with Camilla because, prior to the accident, Charles had been executing a carefully coordinated public relations campaign to gradually introduce Camilla to the British public.

In fact, Camilla was meant to host a high-profile 50th birthday party for Charles later that year, which was intended to serve as her official re-entry into high society.

Diana's sudden death instantly shattered those plans. Charles had to completely abandon the rollout, knowing that any public association with Camilla during a period of intense mourning would trigger devastating backlash. Camilla herself had to go in to hiding. And the couple had to wait a further ten years before they could legitimise their relationship.

AuroraCake · 17/09/2026 06:18

I am sure given that they had two children, that Charles.did not think he was forgetting her any time soon. As far as I am aware Earl Spencer has never been treated badly by any of the royals. He himself though has his own demons to deal with.

BillyBites · 17/09/2026 06:30

I don’t believe (King) Charles said this for one moment. I think he may have said something that Charles S has taken out-of-context or mis-remembered.
And I think it says a lot about the type of person he is that he would write such a thing, true or not, in his book that he must know would cause his nephews further pain.

billysboy · 17/09/2026 06:36

What is Earl Spencer’s motivation for writing the book ? Money or settling an old score ?

SereneFinch · 17/09/2026 06:37

Charles Spencer did a podcast interview with Giles Brandreth a few months ago - I’d urge people to watch it. You get much more of an idea of what he’s like and the life he’s had.

As for the comment, I’m pretty sure you’d remember someone saying that to you. Why invent such a thing all this time later?

redboxer321 · 17/09/2026 06:43

They've messed up here but Charles and Camilla's PR team have done a pretty good job overall rehabilitating those two.
