Royal row between King Charles and Earl Spencer

Buckingham Palace said they don't usually comment but they can't stay silent. Apparently Prince Charles said at the time of Diana's death rest assured we'll forget her soon enough. Which is pretty horrendous. Charles has more or less said grief had clouded Earl Spencer's judgement and memory.

I don't know why he has waited nearly 30 years to come out with this.

Charles Spencer, who joked in his speech at his first wedding to Victoria Lockwood, who had anorexia, that he wanted a wife who would stick by him through thick and thin and , "those of you who know Victoria know that she's thick, and she certainly is thin".

He’s a thoroughly nasty piece of work, despite his borrowed air of virtue from having been close to Diana.

No idea whether CW said those words or not. They were both grieving. They are both self centred men with bad tempers. Neither is trustworthy.

Totally agree. He is such a humongous, pretentious, nasty fool

Is he doing promos for this trashy book I wonder. If yes I hope someone asks him how much he's making from his sister's tragic death and why most of his kids are nc.

Sorry, but people repeatedly bringing up a tetchy couple of seconds over a pen as a sign of Charles' temper 😁

Especially as that was a very emotionally charged moment for him, when the fact his mother was dead and he now had to be a leadership figure for a nation really hit home.

Whatever one thinks of Earl Spencer's recollection of his argument with Charles after Diana's death, I find it difficult to just dismiss it as unbelievable.
There is after all, a pretty revealing piece of evidence from Diana herself. In recordings made during the breakdown of her marriage, she described how, while pregnant with William at Sandringham, she threw herself down the stairs after Charles had told her she was “crying wolf” and that he wasn't going to listen because he was “going riding”. She said the Queen came out “absolutely horrified” and that when Charles returned, his response was “just dismissal, total dismissal”.

That obviously doesn't prove Earl Spencer's account of what Charles said in 1997. But it does give some historical context as to why Spencer's description of Charles as emotionally cold or detached may sound quite plausable. Diana herself portrayed him, at a particularly difficult point in their marriage, as responding to an extraordinary display of distress with remarkable emotional detachment.

And thats why I can understand why people are reluctant to just dismiss Spencer's account out of hand. Whether Charles actually said “we'll forget her soon enough” is ultimately a question of Spencer's recollection versus the Palace's position. But the picture of Charles as an emotionally remote husband isn't something Earl Spencer has simply invented out of thin air.

I just wish they'd let the poor woman rest in peace. It's been nearly 30 years since she died! I don't know what Earl Spencer is hoping to achieve by bringing this up now but I suppose he has a book to sell. It must be horrible for her children to have to deal with these recollections constantly

four marriages and his exes have spoken about him in less than glowing terms. But he’s a convenient ally for the sulky H.

He took a tabloid to court and the court agreed that what you are repeating is not true.

Just the usual contempt from the upper classes for ordinary people doing a job.

Oh sure, BBC star and Epsom College alumnus Nicholas Witchell was just an ordinary person doing an ordinary job.

Ukisgaslit · 17/09/2026 08:36

@Craftysue Your appeal would hold more water if the Windsors hadn’t been smearing Diana for 30 years via the media , most particularly ramped up to try and make Camilla acceptable to the public .

You can see a few posters who have swallowed the tabloid line .

The ‘children’ you mention are in their 40s.

I’m more concerned about the children linked to Epstein and what has happened to the investigation into what the Windsors knew and when .

I agree. I do believe earl with this. Charles may have said it as retaliation against earl. Or he may just be that cold as previous behaviour to Diana suggests.

Agreed.
And the wakes had no issue getting their children to write mother's day cards to a dead grandmother they had never met, and showing these cards to the media.

Can you cite any examples of where the Windsors have "been smearing Diana for 30 years via the media"? That's quite an allegation, especially when not backed up by anything.

Sometimesitsmyownfault · 17/09/2026 08:41

I don’t believe he said that. Looks like Harry will have company in his ‘recollections’. Charles Spencer has always been an odious little man.

No the lie you were repeating that earl said Diana could not stay on his estate.

I don't know earl, neither do you. But he has written how his early childhood sexual abuse made it difficult for him to have a successful marriage.

I know the royal family supporters playbook though is to simply attack anyone who says anything critical about the royal family. I remember the horrendous things said here about that black women at the palace who was subject to very clear racism. Comments here were wrongly claiming she was a criminal instead of a charity worker. Just as doria was supposedly a drug addict, rather than a social worker.

Lol, I never said anything about whether Spencer had allowed Diana to stay on his estate or not.

You said something about something being a lie having been proved in court and quoted a post about his many marriages and divorces and the opinions of his ex-wives.

And the the monarch.....they are both equally nasty unpleasant men - except we have to pay for one.

Charles mocked Diana’s bulimia, in front of her and the whole royal family, asking at meals ‘is that going to reappear later? …What a waste’. She stated that her bulimia was triggered after Charles put his arm around her waist & said ‘oh a bit chubby here, aren’t we’.

My original comment was asking why you are repeating the lie earl denied Diana a house on her estate. He won a case against a tabloid that repeated this lie.

We all know he had four marriages. And childhood sexual abuse that he said made it difficult for him to have successful marriages

Yes there are loads of anecdotes about Charles treating Diana badly.

Or is she just confused and crazy along with anyone who says anything negative about Charles?

BunnyBunbunbun · 17/09/2026 08:49

SunnydayUmbrella · 17/09/2026 07:45

Correct me if I'm wrong, so the boys didn't see their mother's body for the last time? Couldn't it be the reason why Harry can't accept his mother's death as reality until more than 10 years later?

So Charles is to be censured for making Harry walk behind Diana's hearse and also censured for not allowing Harry to see his mother's mangled dead body? Charles is to be blamed for making Harry get too close to his mother's body and for not allowing Harry to get close enough to his mother's body.

Just another example of whatever Charles or any royal do, there's always going to be someone to censure them for doing the wrong thing, in their opinion.

Anecdotes don't equate with facts, especially when just repeated over the years that they end up taking a life of their own. Any actual facts?

Why are you being so incredibly disrespectful in your descriptions of Diana's dead body? Twice you have done this. It is awful. It says a lot about your character that you disrespect the dead in this way.

Yes and I do think Willam might have said something if the 'Windsors were smearing Diana'.

The rf want her to rest in peace, with dignity. Grabby gossipy Harry and his equally grabby uncle want anything but.

Legally eye witness testimony is accepted in a court of law.
What facts do you mean? Those the royal family agree with?

No the royals are happy to talk about Diana when it suits them. Remember those mother's day cards to Diana?

William called his mother paranoid in public. He seems willing to join in the smearing.

Lol, I'm simply responding to other posts.

I'm also not sure when I was previously "disrespectful".

But, sure, outrage is a good way of distracting from the point made.
