Royal row between King Charles and Earl Spencer

Buckingham Palace said they don't usually comment but they can't stay silent. Apparently Prince Charles said at the time of Diana's death rest assured we'll forget her soon enough. Which is pretty horrendous. Charles has more or less said grief had clouded Earl Spencer's judgement and memory.

I don't know why he has waited nearly 30 years to come out with this.

Why had this book been written now and for what purpose?

This book in my opinion is quite vicious and unfair.

For what it’s worth look at the video footage on you tube of Charles fetching Diana’s body from Paris - he was crying at one point, he was compassionate to the sisters. I saw real sad emotions.

Because his dad was a tax dodging womanising arse. And yes there were rumours of a pregnancy but also concern if she got too deep into that family. al Fayed had been trying to get into the establishment for years. I know someone who worked at Harrods and she had tales of the shop girls who were invited to his personal quarters - it was an open secret

I agree. Also knew a Harrods worker.

Mohammed Fayed was definitely known to be shady before all his crimes came to light a few years ago.

Well KC has made more than one public apology, one at his wedding to Camilla.

What were those apologies?

I think Charles was having to look like that. He couldnt very well have gone to Paris grinning like a Cheshire cat, could he.

this is very cynical - Charles looked stricken, zombied.

I admired him at the time for flying to Paris to fetch Diana home
Spencer didn’t

BrandiedAromatics · 17/09/2026 22:46

@adragoncalledaudrey People can be accepting of a revelation or another side to a story if it is told with truth, consideration and class.

You have prompted me to remember the first of these big revelations - KC's Dimbleby interview. The most classless display of entitlement - that has been the trigger for everyone else giving their side of the story.

Diana's two sisters flew to Paris with Charles. Do sisters not matter? Only brothers?

Mohammed Fayed was widely known to be dodgy as fuck even in the 90s.

Quite.

Charles has never admitted he was wrong about anything. He has publicly apologised for slavery and other things he personally did not do. But never for anything he actually did.

Indeed. Al Fayed senior had been repeatedly refused British citizenship (which we can now surmise was due to the fact that goings on with his personal assistants were well known). He must have thought that his son being in a relationship with Diana would solve all his problems. Diana was just being used by the Al Fayeds

OneLilacHedgehog · 17/09/2026 22:49

The media's criticism of dodi was racist. How dare he be with our white princess.
And the media said Diana was pregnant

CoffeeCantata · 17/09/2026 22:50

OneLilacHedgehog · 17/09/2026 21:44

@wordler I know his marriages have been a disaster.
I still believe he is telling the truth.

I don’t think it’s as simple as that.

Why do you think he’s done this now?

What effect will it have on Diana’s sons?

Do you think this is an appropriate way to memorialise her?

Wouid she have approved?

Diana's two sisters flew with Charles.
But obviously sisters don't count, only brothers.
So much sexism at play.

BadBadCat · 17/09/2026 22:52

The night Diana died Harry and William were with their father because she was having dinner at The Ritz with her new fella. She hadn't seen the children for a month!

Oh don't be so disingenuous, clearly the implication is that CS didn't bother to do it himself.

OneLilacHedgehog · 17/09/2026 22:53

No harry and William were at boarding school. This is well documented

He was a sleazebag…that’s why he was regarded with suspicion.

He’d just dumped his actual fiancé in the US to go on holiday with Diana. I remember the woman showing her engagement ring and being stunned by go his desertion - he hadn’t said anything to her.

Yes, I think Mohammed Fayed pushed for the relationship- he’d have loved it.

You think all three had to fly out? Why? Two sisters is enough to accompany the body.

OneLilacHedgehog · 17/09/2026 22:55

@CoffeeCantata I am talking about what the media actually published. What they published were racist opinion pieces against dodi. That is a fact.

It was August. They were at Balmoral.

OLH - yes indeed, sisters. I don’t understand your post.

Did you not read or understand the Heading of this thread
describing a perceived row between Charles the King and
Charles Spencer, the unreliable narrator.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 17/09/2026 22:55

I was on the fence about the line about how Diana would be forgotten. I could imagine contexts in which it might have been said, or something close enough that Spencer might reasonably thought that was what he meant.
However I think he’s overreached himself with the line about CW sounding elated.
I don’t believe for a moment that he WAS elated. It’s entirely possible he could have sounded like it to CS, or CS interpreted his tone in that way.
But Spencer is an intelligent man and a historian. He knows what facts are objective (eg words, if accurately recorded) and which are subjective, and tone of voice is definitely in the latter category and subject to interpretation. Even if at the time he was convinced Charles Windsor was elated, you would think at some point in the intervening years he might have applied his historian’s eye to the conversation and wondered how accurate his own interpretation had been.
So unless the book contextualises that bit with admission that he might have been mistaken about CW’s tone, it seems highly disingenuous to me to present it the way it appears to be.
Still, maybe the press are taking it out of context and he’s not saying that at all….

Apologies. They were on their summer holiday at Balmoral. This was Charles custody time.
