Royal row between King Charles and Earl Spencer

Buckingham Palace said they don't usually comment but they can't stay silent. Apparently Prince Charles said at the time of Diana's death rest assured we'll forget her soon enough. Which is pretty horrendous. Charles has more or less said grief had clouded Earl Spencer's judgement and memory.

I don't know why he has waited nearly 30 years to come out with this.

I can imagine KC3 saying something along those lines about the crazy public and press reaction, how OTT it was and that then she would be forgotten, in a “tomorrow’s fish and chip paper” type comment on the fickleness of the media and public opinion. I can’t imagine him telling Diana’s grieving brother that he and the princes would soon forget her. Whatever he said, I do think it’s distasteful and irresponsible to air it publicly, especially now when Harry still struggles with his mother’s death and is seemingly not in the best of mental health. What’s to be gained by this man who positioned himself as the protector of her sons? Oh yes, money.

Legally eye witness testimony is accepted in a court of law.
What facts do you mean? Those the royal family agree with?

I was asking about examples with facts of where Charles was beastly to Diana. Are you saying there is legal eye witness testimony accepted in a court of law of Charles being beastly to Diana?

OneLilacHedgehog · 17/09/2026 08:43

No the lie you were repeating that earl said Diana could not stay on his estate.

I don't know earl, neither do you. But he has written how his early childhood sexual abuse made it difficult for him to have a successful marriage.

I know the royal family supporters playbook though is to simply attack anyone who says anything critical about the royal family. I remember the horrendous things said here about that black women at the palace who was subject to very clear racism. Comments here were wrongly claiming she was a criminal instead of a charity worker. Just as doria was supposedly a drug addict, rather than a social worker.

Ngozi Fulani is her name and if you're going to criticise others for racism you should do better than "that black woman".

I don’t believe it . Charles is a sensitive man and earl Spencer is a much raker. Why wait 30 years to write a book , he needs the money to pay for all those ex wives ??? How is it helpful to William and Harry to read that supposed statement by their father.

Helpful to Harry to justify his hatred towards the RF

Yes and I do think Willam might have said something if the 'Windsors were smearing Diana'.

The rf want her to rest in peace, with dignity. Grabby gossipy Harry and his equally grabby uncle want anything but.

The irony in all this is that Diana's biggest legacy is going to be William and his children.

Rubbish .
The Windsors smeared Diana in life and in death . That’s the modus.
Smearing one while elevating another is the basic PR the Windsors have used for decades. That was part of the ‘Diana was crazy but Camilla is a good old stick’ line .

The speaking through the tabloids is old and hackneyed now and is only reaching diehard fans - the sort of people who actually read tabloids .

William was a child for a large proportion of it.
Whats he going to do in any case - William needs the PR as much as any of them .

Now you mention William he did repeat the line that Diana was paranoid - an utterly disgraceful thing to do . She was anything but paranoid .

King Charles gives me the creeps. He was busy screwing Camilla when Diana died and before, come to think of it. Nasty adulterous, lying man.

They were divorced at the time she died. He wasn't committing adultery. Are you going to accuse Diana of adultery in the numerous liaisons that she had?

TheOvertGardener · 17/09/2026 09:04

Baldrapunzel · 17/09/2026 07:06

Sorry, but people repeatedly bringing up a tetchy couple of seconds over a pen as a sign of Charles' temper 😁

I was thinking the same! It’s quite bizarre.

Ukisgaslit · 17/09/2026 09:05

@Sereine
He was adulterous before they divorced and admitted as such in his interview .
Charles did the tell all book first ( trashed his parents ) and did the tell all interview a year before Diana did hers .

They always painted her as the crazy ex wife

I don't know about that. But we know someone that just last year painted his third ex wife as the crazy ex wife, it's Charles Spencer. He let his mistress to sue his then future ex wife. As if infidelity wasn't hurt enough, they sued the wife. Crazy stuff.

And was insanely jealous of her popularity . Wouldn’t surprise me if he said it.

No it really was not, seen in context. But let’s not inconvenience ourselves with that.

I am not anti Charles. Being anti a stranger is pretty juvenile.
It is who you believe, and I remember how badly earl Spencer was treated by the royals. So yes I can imagine Charles saying this in retaliation to earl.

How was he treated badly?

I’d be interested in reading a book by his ex-wives.

Maybe some of his ex wives can shed some light on his psyche with respect to his recollections and motivations for sharing them.

Edited

He did.

He said that he was faithful to Diana until he found out that she was not faithful to him.

My fave Charles Spencer story: when he was still married to Karen (his third wife) but having an affair with Cat (who later became his fourth wife), Cat sued Karen for telling Charles that Cat had MS. But then Tom, Cat's then-husband, testified that HE was the one that told Karen about Cat's diagnosis in the first place, and when he did it was already public domain.

I'm all for people getting their stories out here and setting the record straight if they feel it's important BUT if your personal life is THAT messy, I'm not really rushing to hear your thoughts about anyone else's. If something WAS said that was not spoken about or discussed or clarified for 30 years even by the two people involved in the conversation and there's no independent record, I'm not going to lose sleep over it now, when the world is literally burning.

As for the former Princess of Wales, she probably was not nearly "paranoid" ENOUGH.

Yes Diana was deceived by the journalist which was the context
William stated that it contributed to her ‘paranoia’ in her final years . Contributed . IE she was already ‘paranoid’

SereneFinch · 17/09/2026 09:10

This thread perfectly encapsulates why these books get written.

The posts are a mixture of speculation, gossip, rumour, old lies, new lies, he said, she said, opinions, half/truths. A distinct lack of sources and facts.

You can see why Harry, Charles Spencer, Diana herself (via AM) end up writing books. The urge to tell what actually happened, at least from your POV, must be overwhelming.

I’d rather not dredge it up again, but seems quite accurate.

Charles Spencer did a podcast interview with Giles Brandreth a few months ago - I’d urge people to watch it. You get much more of an idea of what he’s like and the life he’s had.

As for the comment, I’m pretty sure you’d remember someone saying that to you. Why invent such a thing all this time later?

Thank you for this suggestion - I’ve just listened to it and found it very moving.

WTAF!

Harry actually should have changed his name to Spencer.

Sereine · 17/09/2026 09:14

This does make me wonder if this forthcoming book and presumably having the support of Earl Spencer; relates to the timing of Harry Wales returning to live in the UK. He has an uncle who seems as angry and sad about his mum’s death as he is.

I hate the way they both seem so determined to monetise Diana and her death. Both of them seem desperate to make it all about themselves. Spencer is blatantly doing this for the money, not out of any genuine concern for any of the people involved.

I quite enjoy the way the palace's reaction is politely but subtly saying "He's totally bonkers, didn't happen."

I think crying about your ex/mistress (whatever you like to call her) on the eve of your wedding to someone else is a bit beastly.
Then the bride to be discovering engraved bracelet with their pet names TWO weeks before the wedding, and Charles wearing engraved cufflinks C&C on his honeymoon...also pretty beastly
