Can anyone explain why Prince George is boarding at Eton when the family home is just minutes away across the river?

Indeed. It’s well-documented that they are swimming at the shallow of the intellect gene pool.

Both Willian and Catherine were awarded 2:1 at St Andrews University. No mean feat.

It's a piece of cake to get a 2:1, most people do.

only those who get uni offers, which already provides some sort of filterin, and St Andrews is one of the more competitive ones. Appreciate William is a special case, but don't think Kate had any concessions

oh for goodness sake.
He has every opportunity in the world.
He could decide to abdicate and still spend the rest of his life as part of the richest 0.1%.

Or he could decide to completely reform the concept of royalty when it comes to his 'turn' and live a far more normal life, like many of the european RFs have done.

Or he could go completely off the rails, say fuck it and spend his entire reign getting pissed/high and snorting coke off prostitutes.

Previous kings have done all 3.

There are kids in extreme poverty who literally don't have any choices in life, they are who I feel sorry for.

Perhaps his early childhood wasn't average but he has had a good education, parents in a stable marriage, and all the comforts he can desire - it's a better start to equip him to make decisions about his own future as he gets older than a child who has grown up with SS involvement, or those who slipped under the radar, or even those in 'normal' families who have suffered abuse or significant bereavements.

He doesn’t have every opportunity in the world though does he? He’s going to be king. He doesn’t have the opportunity to do anything else, unless he abdicates

Yes, partly that. Inbreeding tends to reduce average IQ in descendents by around 20%, sometimes more. Also the sense of entitlement. What’s their incentive to work hard when they’re being raised told they’ll always be rich and have no responsibility for their life outcome?

My paternal grandparents were second cousins. I and other siblings had academic scholarships for American undergrad and went on to earn advanced post-graduation degrees, as did my father.

Askandyforcompo · 08/09/2026 15:32

Suspect they are quite a bit more stable than most who are watching from the virtual sidelines.

Really? Harry not fucked up? William not fucked up? Charles? Princess Margaret? The Queen Mother? Diana? All extremely stable? Come on!

They have a huge family rift being played out in the public domain at this very moment. I'm not sure what type of person could not be impacted by this.

I love your 'gocha', trying to imply an anonymous voice on the internet is fucked up. I expect you think that would get me upset, eh?

harry said in spare he didn’t pass even with massive support. Then when he got there he was well out of his depth.

That's a shame. He'd have been happier somewhere more suited to his academic ability. I know the King's A level results weren't great, so he probably found Cambridge hard. Maybe they gave him easier work or something

Imagine what you couldve done if you were all 20% smarter 🤣

(one second cousin marriage isn’t inbreeding)

All that money to get worse grades than I did at the second lowest school in the national league tables and having left home to live alone in YR11.

I work with many people who went to such schools and it is funny hearing how some of them manage to fail certain A levels even in classes of 2-3 students.

I’m sure these schools do manage to drag up the grades of very unremarkable children one to three grades, with this intense focus and hothousing and their 12 hour days etc. It’s not something I’d choose for genuinely bright, intellectually curious and imaginative children, however.

An independent day school with smaller classes, rigorous academic teaching, high quality extra curricular activities available, properly enforced behaviour policies so far less disruption and violence than an average state school, and a more nurturing environment, yes. I.e. what decent state schools would be with a functioning education system. Boarding and institutionalisation with at least 50% of the intake not being particularly bright anyway, rather there through nepotism or financial means, no.

Can you imagine having to go to school with a spoiled brat like this? I feel sorry for those of his peers who haven’t been raised in such a dsyfunctional manner and removed from any prospect of becoming a self-sufficient adult, and whose parents think this bit of “independence cosplay” will resolve a childhood of entitlement rather than compound it by also stunting their emotional development due to not experiencing normal family life through the latter part of their childhood.

I don't normally comment on these threads, but I feel calling George "a spoiled brat" is a bit much.

The aristocracy send their kids away for school

There was a Spitting Image sketch years ago, which was Prince Edward in his study at Cambridge with his police bodyguard who was writing an essay for him.

Edward "Gosh, you're very clever Constable why didn't you go to Cambridge?"

Bodyguard "Because I got the same A Level grades as you sir"....

Love that - anyway George you have a great time young man and enjoy all the Eton has to offer

Love this 😆

I'd forgotten Edward went to Cambridge too.

He did a History degree there despite apparently getting a D in A-level History!

I think the only ‘gotcha’ is that you might have taken a generalised statement about most watching from the sidelines to be all about you.

It wasn't as far as I could see. So how do you think that should specifically mean you should be upset?

Although it could be argued that thinking any comment on the internet must be all about them is a tiny bit questionable if not a bit odd. Or indeed ‘fucked up’. 🤷🏽

CostcoFanofThree · 08/09/2026 15:52

George did look happy in the Eton uniform photo.
Well done to his parents prepping him for this with occasional overnights at Lambrook.
Private schools have lots of holidays and days off, plus family close by.
Like most parents if he’s unhappy I’m sure they’ll review other options.

Actually, I replied then forgot about you.
I wasn’t expecting such a vehement reply.

I am sure the child you posted about doesn’t need your anonymous sadness and sorry, though. Nor a diatribe about how “fucked up” his family members have been, half of whom were dead before he was born and two whom display all the hallmarks of stability.

It’s pretty weird to show your concern for a kid by typing all that out, dear poster.

Thank you. Is a “gocha” anything like a “mocha”? I’ll take one of those please!

I actually think it's an ideal situation. He'll get to live, work, sleep, eat, play sports, etc. etc. along side his peers. No palaces, no servants, and no press for most of the year. He'll live in exactly the same way, in the same dorm rooms, same rules, same restrictions, as everyone else.

A regular routine, plus total privacy and security, which means a chance to feel just like everyone else for a change, which will give him real stability throughout his adolescence. And he's close enough to his parents that he can pop home for an occasional Sunday lunch if he wants to.

He gets independence without being too far away, and from now until he finishes university is a golden decade of his life where he has a chance to just be himself, make friends, and have the closest thing there is to a normal life and routine that he will ever have.

For many children, boarding school takes them away from normal life. For Prince George, it is a chance to be part of it. Makes total sense to me. I hope he's really happy there.

That's a very good point !

upinaballoon · 08/09/2026 16:17

Catherine didn't just deftly close her umbrella. She did it on the move, in high heels - probably the way Ginger Rogers would have done, except not backwards.

I do hope they'll teach George Latin and how to use pronouns.

Presumably, then, you understand the meaning of the word “average”?

DeHumanaeMentisApatheia · 08/09/2026 16:26

No dorms there, @poppymango - each boy has his own room. (Unless you meant in the US sense of general student accommodation?)

What a fascinating perspective.

It makes one wonder how people function as an adult if they perceive reading three of four paragraphs to be an insurmountable task, not to mention the unfathomable decision of people lacking such basic skills to engage in an optional written discussion.

How fabulous: legendary umbrella closing, while walking, in shoes!

These are, I’m sure, precisely the kind of skills that one should value in Heads of State and their spouses.

OneLilacHedgehog · 08/09/2026 16:41

The real reason is the parents want him to go to Eton. Eton is full boarding, no exceptions.
