King Charles orders Harry and Meghan to be treated like ordinary citizens

Apparently an order has gone out from King Charles saying that Harry and Meghan are to be treated like ordinary citizens as they are not working members of the royal family. That's according to the DM so it must be right. The thought of those two being pleased at being ordinary is too much.

I wonder just how low they will keep their profile and if it's to do with them wishing to be involved in charities. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to set up their own mock royal court.

Yes, while ordinary members of the public stand quietly by showing their respect for the fallen.
Throughout the country towns and villages carry out similar ceremonies at 11am on Rememberance Sunday, when local dignitaries lay wreaths on behalf of their respective organisations.
Harry does not represent anyone other than himself so he is not entitled to lay a wreath during the service. If he really wants to, he could wait until after the rememberance service, like the rest of us, but I'm not sure he'd be so keen to do that.

Beautifully put roses ! And much better than mine which apparently happened while I was obsessed with using “behalf”.

It’s mind boggling any point needs to be clarified. I’m a lay person and even I don’t need clarification. It simply says what was agreed in 2020 stands,

their push back shows they do not wish what was agreed in 2020 to stand and they do not wish to be private citizens,

instead of trying to shoe horn themselves back in by the back door, they’d be better to say we are sorry, we fucked up. A lot of the shite we wrote and said was either blatant lies or exaggerated, we were angry and spiteful as we wanted to be number one, we have failed to make it work, and would like to come back please.

Gutter press and online nutters: ha! Take that, Meghan!

Who wrote ‘Take that, Meghan!’?

I’ve only seen that in your post. So are you aligning with the gutter press and, ahem, ‘online nutters’?

Grass touched I believe.

I agree, it's a poor show, I suppose a sightly posh version of airing your dirty laundry publicly. It seems very sad that this letter has zero affection or goodwill from Father to son, if this was meant to endear KC to the public, surely the wording could have been improved?

Well it endeared him to me. I thought well said Charles, it’s a shame you had to spell it out in basic English , but it is clear that HAM were trying to weasel their way back into the Golden Circle by foul means or fair. Maybe if HAM had been a bit more open with their intentions rather than springing up like a Jack in the box expecting the fatted calf to be ready on the bbq Charles would have felt a bit more generous, but there are only so many times you can let your child spit on you before you realise it isn’t just having a bad day.

At 3.09 p.m., the couple’s team were able to get hold of Prince Harry, who had been in a meeting, to inform him and share that they were asking about a couple of points in the letter. But at 3.11 p.m. U.K. time, they were told that the letter had been circulated to the media.

This is cracking me up.

Firstly, there is no 'team'.

Secondly, Harry was 'in a meeting'? That's a fanciful way to say he hadn't stumbled out of bed yet.

Also, what “points” were his alleged team asking about? The letter as has been said, merely reiterates the known position of the palace. It wasn’t inviting comments or amendments. Oh how they do love to make themselves sound important and consequential

grammar fail

I think it’s rather undignified and a bit spiteful to publish such a letter regarding your own children, regardless of what you’ve been through with them. Most ordinary people would never do it. No love lost in that ‘family ‘.

What's your view on the 6 part NF documentary, Spare, several TV and print interviews where they accused his family of racism and toxic behaviour?

Spiteful and rather undignified?

Their spokesperson is seemingly saying they didn’t get a chance to clarify some points in Charles statement. I can’t even begin to understand that. There is nothing new in there, it is a reconfimation of what’s already agreed, years ago.

and why would Charles consult with them, it’s not like they consult with Charles when they make their accusations.

Harry, dude, you don’t work here anymore.

But the DM haven’t invented this letter 🤔

No. They've just wildly elevated the tone and framed it as something damning.

When you see how low media literacy is in this country, you understand why it's all going to shit.

I'm paraphrasing. The glee with which people are interpreting a perfectly straightforward statement as somehow an 'order' is honestly quite pathetic.

Oh I don’t know! If they had been allowed the run of a £30 million mansion like Sophie and Edward, for a peppercorn rent, they might have stayed around a bit longer!

This is all quite ridiculous frankly. Harry’s situation simply exposes the difficulties that a hereditary monarchy throws up, and it also highlights the smoke and mirror presentation of private and public wealth that goes along with it. That’s why the institution is so unhappy about it all.

Sophie and Edward work hard for the monarchy. The hams don't want to work, they just want to attend glitzy stuff.
I totally agree about the primogeniture of the eldest getting everything, it breeds resentment as lazy spares like AMW and h are jealous and entitled, they want the same but without the responsibility.
Strange how it didn't affect the hard working support team Ann, her family, Edward and his family. They get small amount of sovereign grant but also run their estates as a business. Farming, accommodation, business rental etc. Ann owns her estate outright nothing to do with peppercorn rent.

I think you may be the one misreading the reactions.

People are gleeful, and that is because the adult in the room has finally spoken and set the rules out for those who have been flaunting them.

Well then your media literacy must allow you to see that his letter, when taken at face value in lots of publications besides the DM is actually damming just in what it says. The palace have felt it necessary to reaffirm the status of the Sussexes because they have been given cause to do so by the uncertainties that have been generated by their (the Sussexes) sudden arrival in the UK. I myself had come to the conclusion that it was damning having read it elsewhere before coming across this thread. No need for the DM or anyone else to “frame” it

When you see how low media literacy is in this country, you understand why it's all going to shit.

Media literacy would be recognizing that the letter on its own is going to provoke questions like “Why did they feel this letter was necessary” and “What has happened in the past two weeks?” And “If KC knew this was happening why wasn’t there time to settle this before they arrived?”

While you may think the public lacks media literacy, you must recognize that the palace does not and will have anticipated every reaction you are seeing now. Still, they chose to step out of their normal “never explain” stance.

You may not read this as an order, but others will know it means “Don’t send us your bills” and “Use that HRH again at your own peril.”

You’re going to have to do better if you want to play here, girlie.

That phrase is worn and tired. It means something but not what you think and it ain’t about me.

derFutterneid · 08/09/2026 13:59

I have no malice towards the HAMs. I don't really care either way. I'd rather not read about them all the time though.

I can't understand why he is coming back? I thought maybe they had made up with everyone and agreed they could come back and hang out, like the prodigal son, but it seems not.

Ever been to Montecito? I was in the US and stayed very close to there. I am pretty sure it is much more glitzy and glam than being over here. I mean, they are not going to get the A list charity and other gigs are they, as that'll just annoy the future King and I am sure a lot of our institutions don't want to do that.

So, what is here for them then? A couple of appearances at the O2. Judging the best roses at Kew Gardens, or cutting the ribbon at the new leisure centre in Stevenage?

I don't get the reasoning for coming back here. Plus, if I was Harry and I saw the vitriol directed at him already in the news, I'd halt the move. I think they are better off, and left alone over in the USA TBH. I feel sorry for him and his DC.

the line years ago

‘Glee’ and ‘pathetic’ ? Familiar.

Most have agreed that it is a clarification/reiteration of what was already agreed and indeed apparently wanted by H&M.

They have been done few favours have H&M. Mostly by those who try to elevate them. I would go so far to say that those who have been so fervent in their support have helped to damage their already poor reputation further.

It encouraged others to engage with the circus and also led them down rabbit holes to see or read things that no-one wants to know.

If I take the letter as damning? The damning is that it has to be issued in the first place. Which says to me that people have overstepped and needed reminding.

It is damning in that respect I agree. And I would argue rightly so.

If H&M want to play surprised? Then that says a lot about their self awareness.

I still think their return is curious. I’m prepared to go down a few rabbit holes there.

They seemed happier in Montecito. They should have maybe touched the grass there.

I agree as I'm not sure what needs claifiying - seemed fairly clear letter and it was supposed to what they had agreed to.

I suspect clarify means argue the toss and create doubt - suspect they were given it only a little before hand so their time to leak before made public was very limited.

I agree with you but the DM has a habit of running least one if not more made up stories about them for years.
just for info found out the DM supported Oswald Mosley in the 1930’s they did eventually drop them think after WW2 started. They have been supporting the Right for a long time, somthing I was unaware of.

Perhaps you should have a look at the campaign against press freedom that Max Mosley (who held the same views as his father, and met several of his father's Nazi friends) was funding up until his death.

You will find that in the recent ANL case in which Prince Harry was a claimant,
Evan Harris (as director of Hacked Off) was paying witnesses for information, with money provided by Max Mosley.
He suggested in court that he was paying 'journalistic sources', but the judge ruled that there was no evidence that the payments were for anything separate to their witness testimony.

I think the king wanted to pre empt any confusion. After all they've done several overseas tours where they more or less acted as de facto royals. I wonder whether, even if their Nigerian and Colombian hosts knew it was an unofficial visit, whether in fact the people who attended those events thought they were doing it on behalf of the royal family. I think they intentionally blurred the lines and would continue to do so if they could get away with that.

Indeed . Harry himself said it and seemed annoyed about it .

Yep, imagine either of them being expected to work!

Yes I know that 🙄 That is what Charles letter was making clear because there is obviously some confusion as to the Sussexes status. Which is what we are all taking about

eta when did the late Queen say Charles would be a bad king?

Edited

We all know that already. Every single person in Britain knows that as it was said so many times before. Thus just comes across as extremely petty and snide,
