You seriously think that’s all they do ?
Really ?

They don't really believe that. Just ignore.

I feel really angry about this. His dad and brother have millions, they could stump up. It just highlights the complete and utter selfishness of HAM.Why should we pay for their whims?

How much did he make from "Spare"?
From Netflix, interviews, speaking, endorsing?
How much has he inherited, got invested, got from various older members of the RF?
He's not going to pay, because he wants the UK taxpayer to do so.

Hello all. I have been lurking. This thread is my 'guilty pleasure'. I have just nipped on to say that ITV Breakfast have reported the tax payer is going to be paying for any protection.

The kind of security Ravec sanction and the police supply isn't for sale in the UK, so whatever's provided will always be on te public tab - the exception being any pureply private security which people hire

No doubt it made an extra "item" for ITV though ...

flapjackfairy · 24/08/2026 09:21

so all Harry's whinging and whining and carrying on like a spoilt child has got him what he wanted then.

It's not got his wife parity with Catherine.

Boudy · 24/08/2026 09:26

@Mylovelygreendress I think because so many people are finding life hard re col etc and it is something meaningful they could do. I really do not think the tax payer should be stumping up for this.....the whims of HAM.

If you mean the security, then no - what any return will get him is another Ravec review, because the last one concerned occcasional visits and it's being reported he'll now be here most of the time

As so many have explained, as a non-working royal that would put him in the same position as others who don't get 24/7 security either, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't whine about wanting it

ShamedBySiri · 24/08/2026 09:28

Some of the pieces I have in mind.
I’d just love to see Catherine flaunt them.
Though there may also be issues regarding the Saudi connection unfortunately.

Meghan would need a visa, wouldn’t she? And Lily, unless they got her a British passport.

They she does have a British passport. Remember the whole ado around it.

H&M claimed the palace wasdelyainh them being issued with the kids HRH titles.

When in reality

  1. There is always a backlog at the passport office
  2. There has been no precedent for a sudden HRH upgrade / name change this century (or even last?)
  3. They'll have had no paperwork to evidence the change since it's automatica on the death of the monarch
MissFenellaPrism · 24/08/2026 09:32

Harry will never stop moaning because he and his wife decided to weaponise victimhood.
That's their identity and their way to make money and stay in the headlines.

There were said to be unfortunate connections over the tiara Meghan allegedly wanted too, @ShamedBySiri, which is why I always thought the story ridiculous

Angela Kelly and others would have known perfectly well which ones weren't suitable, and therefore they would never have been offered in the first place

Edited to add I thought they'd been caught flogging some of the Saudi gifts - or was that stuff apart from the jewellery?

Does Harry know what he wants? The constant changing of narratives and plans would suggest not.

"Only smaller charities would take a punt on associating with him, I think, but they couldn't afford to pay much in the way of expenses."

Is it normal for charities to pay expenses for eg minor celebrities? I know there have been complaints in the past of certain people charging to appear on things like BBC CIN or whatever. And of course there is much discussion re: Invictus paying large sums for Harry and Meghan to attend. But surely for the actual Royals the whole point of the civil list is to fund their work, so there is no bill at the end of the day for their attendances and contributions? "A" list celebrities with deep pockets presumably offer their services for free?
Surely no charity big or small will be stupid enough to take on H&M if they come along with a list of demands and fees?

It's not normal to pay expenses, no, because the patrons don't claim them rather than the expenses aren't offered.

There's a bit of an unspoken quid pro quo in that events make it "worth their while", e.g. giving them a chance to hobnob with useful people in a nice enough pro-bono or sponsored venue.

Your patrons and supporters need to be a sort of ladder for each other. There's no point having people too many "rungs" apart as the relationship ceases to be useful in most cases.

Operational staff had real issues with one high profile politician as a patron because as well as the controversies, it was hard to pin him down, and our trustees were all quite inexperienced in running small charities - running Lloyds or a ftse 100 fintech company resulted in advice that was not exactly useful for a fte staff of 9. And your patron has to meet the approval of all of your pipeline.

(I have a lot of problems with the way charities have to dance for the piper!)

I can't see a charity that would fit.

I have heard a different story - that Meghan wanted the Emerald Kokoshnik, but Eugenie had already been allocated it for her wedding (and it looked glorious on her, IMO).

Also, QEII was a mistress of how jewellery should be used. Catherine had a relatively small tiara for her wedding - Meghan's had to be comparable. I absolutely love the photo of QEII scowling at Megan in the chapel. I mean, it's partly just that her natural relaxed expression was pretty grumpy, but it's still funny in light of everything that's happened since.

So , not such a mystery after all. That's 5m reasons a year H&M have to relocate here right there.

But they have been paying the equivalent in US for years - so obviously can’t afford it anymore. Also there’s a suggestion that this is a stop gap - ‘extended stay’ - might only be for a school year en route to Canada or Australia - where they most definitely will have to pay for their own security.

How do we know that RAVEC have declared that they need £5m of security? That’s all rumour and media click bait to agitate IMHO. RAVEC didn’t declare he needed this level as recently as July - so what’s changed? Nothing just media nonsense.

I realise Catherine isn't a petty, vengeful person so it will never happen, but I'd love to see her flex her position by flaunting jewellery that Diana wore, which Meghan will never have access to. It would send a certain message...

I think it was discussed on @DaisyDooley royal jewellery thread, I may be wrong, but it is believed that certain iconic pieces that Diana wore were wedding gifts and as such have been retained by the crown and presumably are hidden away in the Buckingham Palace vault. I think we can be sure if Meghan had acquired any of those big pieces we would have seen the evidence.

I can quite understand why Catherine chooses not to wear these items, no doubt anyway it's not her style, but also she will be aware of endless tedious articles about "sweet nods to Diana" and she will also be respectful of how William might feel about it.

But with Earl Spencer's book, rumours of a H&M 30th anniversary Netflix special, and the final insult, the two of them rocking up back on the doorstep, now would be a great time to pull rank and wear those pieces.

"One of the most famous examples of Diana’s “lost” jewels is the extravagant Crescent set, a bold, modern suite of diamonds and sapphires given to her by the Sultan of Oman." This piece and the huge sapphire choker need the dust brushing off. Now is the time.

www.vanityfair.com/story/what-happened-to-princess-dianas-most-famous-jewels?srsltid=AfmBOopsxwWknnJpTL1rNUpDh-l2FpPEXYXLiUOvwPcjeRaWXuqGpLiN

I imagine that whatever jewellery Diana had that was hers was divided equally between William and Harry, Harry had the engagement ring originally and swapped it for the Cartier Tank watch so Kate could have the ring.

Yes there was that story too, @SqueakyDinosaur, and none of us were there so will never really know

The story I'd really like to know though is what actually happened to make the wedding outfits such a mess. Givenchy is a high end house and will naturally say nothing, but the results were so sub-par that there must have been a reason

Indeed. Plus the absolute horror that was Charlotte's bridesmaid dress. Something from Primark would have looked better.

Hello all. I have been lurking. This thread is my 'guilty pleasure'. I have just nipped on to say that ITV Breakfast have reported the tax payer is going to be paying for any protection.

Well that’s really sort of being economical with the truth because we already were paying for any security he received on his visits from the US. So yes, taxpayer funded security will be provided, but only if deemed necessary. In theory he could have tax payer provided 24/7 security (because it would be provided by the met’s special protection branch), or he could have no security at all. It depends on the review

ETA. It really makes any move back to the UK on their part look even more cynical as they are forcing the issue of having to decide what level of security is necessary when they live here full
time. When they were just visiting it was relatively easy to allocate on a case by case basis, but I imagine deciding what to do now is a real headache for RAVEC

Boudy · 24/08/2026 10:00

They did mention 5 million. I know media needs to be taken with a hefty pinch of salt as they do like to whip up a frenzy. I will continue to enjoy these threads.

Exactly.

This is what RAVEC exists to do - assess the risk to royals and VIPs, and make a decision on their security provision.

I suspect Harry may not yet have worked out that by moving back to the UK to live (assuming that is what he is doing) he will no longer qualify for his 'bespoke' security package, but will be assessed in exactly the same way as other non-working royals.

BunnyBunbunbun · 24/08/2026 10:05

Badvocthebad · 24/08/2026 08:40

Using the words "working" and "royal" in the same same sentence has always amused me.
It's hardly "work" to get transported to a place, cut a ribbon, shake a few hands and then transported back to their huge staffed mansions/palaces in time for tea 🙄

Working royal means you represent the head of state within Britain and abroad. The head of state is a vital position that plays a huge role in the country's foreign relations. The head of state is also a uniting figure for the nation.

Every country has a head of state, even though some are not always ceremonial. A ceremonial head of state is better, as he/she is an apolitical national institution.

I'm always amused by people who think the UK shouldn't have a head of state and, since our head of state is a ceremonial monarch, why other members of the royal family shouldn't play an assisting role. It's better than stuff like a First Lady.
