Agreed, though a private school term start might be well into that second week of September so a bit longer. Still.

Wondering if their new house is settled yet. And whether Althorp is at least a temporary location. It's the one place they've actually seen lately that we know of.

The jet lag west to east is brutal. Archie and Lili will be snoozing at their desks on their first day if they don’t get here pdq.

I always found it worst east to west!
The children will be fine, I'm sure. As pp said, private schools start later on.

I have to speak up in their defence (can’t quite believe I’m saying that!) with regards the move and then starting school very quickly after. That is totally normal in expat lives.

We moved on a Thursday and our DC started school on the Monday. We had only been in the country for 6 days, 6 weeks earlier on a recce and that was when we chose the school and did all the entrance tests etc. We bought uniform that recce week and then came back to the UK, sorted all our stuff, said our goodbyes, had Christmas in the midst of it, and then moved 3 weeks after Christmas.

We had a 3 month run up before our recce week, from when the idea was first touted out of the blue, but I know many, many others who have had much shorter run ups. Kids really are very adaptable and it is totally doable.

I read somewhere they are moving to Northamptonshire and Earl Spencer is very taken aback.

@CarrierbagseverywhereI agree with you about expat families and we have a few friends who live like that. Children are adaptable but if you have money and choice why not try to make the transition as smooth as possible?
We have a friend who works for one of the big oil companies. Each time he has moved country, the company has paid for the school fees and rent until the end of that year so the dcs don’t just get yanked out of school.

Yes, depending on whether this really has been a very short notice plan (fleeing visa problems etc) or has been secretly planned for some time I am more surprised at them finding a suitable house at very short notice. I realise money helps, but top end rental properties just sitting around empty waiting for a homeless prince? Well I suppose pp who describe short notice moves have been able to do it but I still find it quite surprising. Even if they have fallen on the hospitality of Earl Spencer, unless he is putting them up in the big house for a while which he will soon come to regret no doubt I wouldn't have thought he would have too many large top end houses empty and ready to go at a moments notice.
Their particular needs will be for more than the average wealthy banker I would think, with particular privacy and security considerations.
But I suppose if one looks on right move or wherever, there will be a few that sit around for a while (usually for reasons...).

Been away, have I missed something??

Am curious about schools, it would be weird to me to choose a private school without involving kids in taster days and visits. Do we think the kids and parents have looked around any schools? Seems risky to not manage a transition like that as best you can.

It's true they have form for ill considered decisions and dropping them onto others, but also true that a lot of things they confidently announce simply don't happen (and AFAIK there's been no announcement this time anyway)

Obviously I know no more than anyone else as to whether it'll happen, but if it doesn't I'm sure the media will move onto the next silly story quickly enough

With regards to the practicalities, I would have sent one or two of the three nannies over to the UK ahead of everyone else to organise uniforms/make children's bedrooms nice and welcoming/scope out fun things they could do in the vicinity. But this is H&M, so I imagine the kids will be bustled from Heathrow straight to class and will have to attend the first few days barefoot in their pyjamas.

They don't want "the royal breath down the neck" (sic) but want to do Royal events like Christmas at Sandringham? Ok.

I think that something completely unexpected and alarming has happened very recently to push them into this decision. The only thing that makes sense that I've heard is that Harry was going to be arrested and/or deported for visa issues.

I can't see how they would make the decision to move back to the UK after past (and some very recent) negative comments about it, especially from Harry. And it's no secret that it's the last place in the world Meghan wants to be.

I really do thing they were forced to do this. I also think the move will be temporary for Meghan and permanent for Harry. The kids? Well who knows.

Of course, were Harry to be arrested, he would at least qualify for some of the taxpayer-funded security he so desperately thinks he deserves.

Ooh, no. According to HAM's photos and press releases, Lili is a little fairy creature with blue, blue eyes that flits around sylvan spaces on her at-one-with-nature-bare-tootsies.
Bit like Elfine in Cold Comfort Farm before Flora Poste got her sorted.
She's only seen to do stereotypically girlie things.
Besides, with that beautiful hair she can sit on, that always floats around her shoulders, she'd be scalped in her first scrum.
