A poster on another thread last week said that Harry has to get back into good grace in the UK before Chas dies because afterwards, William won't even consider it.
This is precisely it. He knows things with William are damaged beyond repair, so he’s trying the “I want to make amends with my father before it’s too late” angle - while none too subtly implying Charles is on his way out, despite no public suggestion of anything of the sort - hoping it will tug at a few heartstrings and he can get back in good graces while he still has a potential supporter, and before William is in charge.
The big problem - well, one of many - with Harry is that, for all his wailing about life as the Spare, he’s never really understood where that will put him later in life. He always thought he was a bit special; that he was the playboy prince the press loved to follow and that even people who don’t really like the royals were cheering on.
What he forgets is that, back when his parents were getting married, Prince Andrew was all over the press for his “Randy Andy” antics, and tabloid readers lapped it up. Andrew and Fergie’s wedding was huge news - as were they for many years, even if the press coverage wasn’t exactly flattering. But then William and Harry began growing up, William had a brief moment of looking like he might inherit Diana’s looks rather than Charles’s, and suddenly there was a new generation who were more interesting and, crucially, were in line for the top job one day. Andrew was have been vilified for the past few years, but before that there were a good 15 years or more where he was largely an irrelevance. A few “rent a royal” stories, but no one particularly cared.
And maybe Harry is finally realising that that’s what lies in his future once William is King. William who has three photogenic children waiting to supplant Harry in terms of press interest, just as he did with Uncle Andy.
