BBC reporting here
Norway's royal family gathers at King Harald's bedside as his condition worsens www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cqxvrnvrr5do

Among those visiting the hospital were Crown Princess Mette-Marit who arrived with Haakon, as well as her son Marius Borg Høiby, who is under house arrest during his appeal against a conviction for rape.

I wasn’t expecting that.

No nor did I, but then maybe he’s been in the family since a small child. MN is all for treating stepchildren the same… obviously he can’t be in the line of succession, but they may view him as grandchild.

Yes, his grandfather was a minor Danish prince who was offered the Norwegian throne. Which, by today's standards, seems rather a bonkers thing to happen!

It is very random!

Also when you consider a different Danish prince ended up being King of Greece as well it’s random that they just ended up being in thrones in various places!

Even more randomly, the Swedish Royal family is descended from Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, one of Napoleon Bonaparte’s Marshals. He wasn’t even a royal, or Swedish, but was voted crown Prince of Sweden in 1810 by the Swedish parliament who had a succession crisis looming and wanted to strengthen their relationship with France!

I do love all the stories like that. So much political wheeling and dealing and it had such impact on people’s.

Tempted to start a thread for random royal stories, all these wee facts are randomly fascinating.

That would be so interesting @JustAnotherWhinger

So now they're expected to call Mette Marit Queen?

Poor Norway ... Confused

AnnunciataM · 28/08/2026 16:58

She's married to the King so I guess they don't have a choice! I suspect she'll keep a low profile due to her health issues and Ingrid will be called on to perform more duties.

But I think there's more to come with Marius's sentencing and it's one thing when he was the crown prince's stepson but the king's?

WillowTit · 28/08/2026 18:43

it is quite heartening how many young people are wishing to say goodbye to the King and welcome to the new king.

WillowTit · 28/08/2026 18:44

i think Epstein knew exactly what he was doing involving so many prominent members of the royal family etc.

The two random Danish princes were uncle and nephew!

What’s really bizarre is to think that Harald’s great-grandfather was Edward VII.

I think he did as well, especially when you look at the royals he targeted (and I think everyone in his life was specifically targeted by him).

The actual history of this is very interesting - and murky in parts.

Sweden had an elected monarchy until 1543 where the aristocracy gathered and decided who would be the new King (a bit like electing a Pope) However King Gustav Vasa managed to get a new law passed that all future kings would be from the house of Vasa - thus making it a hereditary monarchy.

However the terrible events of 1809 changed everything. Sweden was a large Eastern European power but fought a disastrous war against Russia and lost huge swathes of Swedish territory (the whole of present day Finland and parts of Russia). The Swedes were furious and a military coup exiled the royal family from Sweden but supported an uncle to succeed him.

One result of the disastrous way was to force Sweden into the Napoleonic Continental system for trade, giving Napoleon greater influence. However, a new constitutional crisis emerged when the new King, Karl XIII, suffered a heart attack in 1809, the same year he took power. Although he survived he became a permanent invalid with a regent needed. This triggered a succession crisis as his own children died as newborns. So it was decided that he would adopt a Danish prince - but then he also died

Then it becomes very murky. A Swedish envoy was sent to get Napoleon's blessing to put another Danish prince on the throne - but somehow he can home having offered the throne to one of Napoleon's generals - a man of no noble birth and the son of a lawyer from Pau - Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte .... and this is how the Bernadottes obtained the throne of Sweden and Norway.

It backfired a bit on Napoleon though - he thought he was getting a yes-man but Bernadotte turned out to be very independent and didn't follow Napoleon's wishes and King Jean focused on building the economy.

I don't know - I feel a bit sorry for her.

I wonder how a woman from such a vulnerable and disadvantaged background actually became part of royal circles? Was this actually manipulated by Epstein or others?

From memory I think she met Haakon at a music festival or something?

She may well be vulnerable but that doesn't necessarily mean she had no agency in the immoral decisions she seems to have made re Marius and Epstein.

I seem to remember one of Harald's sisters speaking out against Haakon marrying her but Harald and Sonja were supportive, presumably because of what they themselves had been through.

Itawapuddytat · 28/08/2026 20:01

Mette-Marit and Haakon met in 1998 and were officially dating in 1999 ( I was a student at the same University in that year and they could be seen sometimes in the Campus) Long before she had anything to do with Epstein .

Itawapuddytat · 28/08/2026 20:04

If I remember right, the controversy about the Crown prince dating her was about the fact she had had a bit of a wild lifestyle in the past, including a lot of partying, taking drugs and hanging out with people who were also involved with drugs.

AnnunciataM · 28/08/2026 20:10

Yes, I think that's right. And not so much that she was a single mother per se but that Marius's father was a convicted criminal.

JustAnotherWhinger · 28/08/2026 20:12

AnnunciataM · 28/08/2026 19:57

I seem to remember one of Harald's sisters speaking out against Haakon marrying her but Harald and Sonja were supportive, presumably because of what they themselves had been through.

She was critical of Haakon marrying Mette-Marie and criticised Martha-Louise for marrying Ari Behn as well. She felt they should have married “better”.

She did also say she felt sorry for Marius and that he’d have a very difficult life being around the royal family but not royal. She rather predicted that well!

She was rumoured to have said she hoped she died before Mette-Marit became Queen, but that was never confirmed (and she wasn’t really shy at voicing her opinions).
