Wessex rude to comedians

This does astound me. The level of rudeness is breathtaking. The Earl and Countess of Wessex attended the Royal Variety Show and met performers backstage afterwards. Frank Skinner and Baddiel were doing their Three Lions song but Skinner was ill and his throat hurt.

“Sophie led the way, bearing in mind I’d had a really hard day and I battled on like a trooper. So she comes up and she says ‘Well, don’t give up your day job’. I thought ‘This is not how the royal walk thing works’. And we honestly said ‘Pardon?’ It’s supposed to be just banal compliments. I said ‘Was it that bad?’ And she said: ‘Well, you know, I could tell, you know, it’s not what you do’. And I said ‘Erm, well, normally we’re like comics’. She said, ‘Yeah, but you’re on screen aren’t you, you’re not used to a live crowd’.”
“I said: ‘Well we’ve done a bit of live stuff you know, stand-up and stuff’. But she’s sticking with it and she said ‘Yeah, but you haven’t done anywhere the size of this’. I said ‘Look, I did the Palladium last Sunday’. She looked at me like ‘you’re not supposed to be arguing, I don’t think you’re supposed to be arguing with me, you’re supposed to just nod’. It was like a really awkward thing.”
Skinner went on to say that Prince Edward also came up to him and Baddiel and criticised their performance. He said that while he could not recall his exact words, he remembered sarcastically replying “that’s a good review”. The comedian felt their conversational efforts were somewhat lacking for people of their stature."

I heard Frank talking about this on his Saturday radio show. What an obnoxious pair Sophie and Edward sound. Plus Edward saying ‘everyone thinks I’m Charles’ son’. Yeah right. I’ve met Edward and he looks at least a decade older than he is.

I am personally really surprised by this. I thought at a public engagement they would just be nice and banal. It's not hard to do some small talk. It's not hard to avoid being so rude.

Ah well, the sense of entitlement seems to be a common feature with these people, and of those around them.

Saucery · 05/12/2022 14:09

Frank Skinner’s a creepy sleaze.

FlorettaB · 05/12/2022 14:12

What did David Baddiel say?

Mischance · 05/12/2022 14:14

Hey - I can do banal! Never knew you could make a living out of it! Where do I apply? Xmas Smile

wordler · 05/12/2022 14:32

That is awful - and not what I’d expect from Sophie - I wonder if it was a really bad attempt at banter.

Frank Skinner gives me the ick but I feel a little sorry for him there!

Pearmain · 05/12/2022 14:35

This is the problem with the aristocracy and the royals - they genuinely believe that we are all beneath them and they have total contempt for us commoners no matter what colour we are. The queen managed to conceal it but the rest of them seem unable to.

Thesearmsofmine · 05/12/2022 14:38

To me it started off sounding like Sophie was trying to be jokey but he didn’t take it that way and then it all got a bit awkward. I dunno, I’m not a royalist but I’d be surprised if she was genuinely trying to be horrible.

antelopevalley · 05/12/2022 14:53

Telling a stranger who is ill and has sung on stage - don't give up your day job - is not funny. It might be fine as a joke between friends who like this kind of humour. But it is simply rude to strangers.
And if it really was a joke, you say oh sorry it was a joke. You do not double down.

This reads to me like someone who was being rude and did not care.

I mean number one of small talk is you do not make a joke unless you know it will be fine. It is why the Queens jokes in public were always very mild at the Christmas cracker level.
Light-hearted talk should have been at the level off - bet you will be glad to get home and get your feet up, you don't sound well at all.

God, he's a comedian! Why on earth can't he take a joke. Never had Skinner down as such a drip. What a baby.

antelopevalley · 05/12/2022 15:12

So if you are a comedian you should accept anyone insulting you?

OP posts:
ArcaneWireless · 05/12/2022 15:13

It seems to work well enough for those continually insulting certain royals…

antelopevalley · 05/12/2022 15:14

Who exactly is meeting Royals as part of their job and insulting them?'Because that would not be okay.

OP posts:
ArcaneWireless · 05/12/2022 15:17

Ah. So just fine to continually disparage certain people as long as folk aren’t actually meeting them and don’t know them from an egg.?

This is the sort of comment prevalent under this article in The Times.

The Royals are being paid to turn up
and smile, not be rude to people.

RaRaRaspoutine · 05/12/2022 15:19

Oh Sofiesta, never change.

RaRaRaspoutine · 05/12/2022 15:20

I'd have asked her what her day job is, and her husband.

LookingFunny · 05/12/2022 15:21

'Don't give up the day job' sounds like a joke to me.

Skinner's gone right down in my estimations.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 05/12/2022 15:24

Im actually not sure i believe this ive met Edward and Sophie a couple of times and they have never been anything but polite and kind to everyone. Edward is more reserved but sophie comes across as a very warm person.

Ive also been in a queue behind Frank Skinner and he was rude to everyone around him.

Coxspurplepippin · 05/12/2022 15:27

Sounds entirely as if Sophie tried to have a little light banter and it went down wrong for some reason - maybe if Frank Skinner is unwell he just wasn't in the mood for it. However, to then splash the contents of the conversation all over social media? Not great behaviour.

antelopevalley · 05/12/2022 15:31

I know the "done thing" is never to say publically if the Royal Family are rude to you. I think people were more willing to stfu when the Queen was the Monarch, but I think that idea has gone now.
And I do not see why people should stfu if the Royals are rude to them. Being polite is the very minimum we should expect.

OP posts:
JulieMarooley · 05/12/2022 15:32

It sounds like it was a bit of banter, they are not known as proper singers, plus he had a sore throat, so she probably thought it was safe to make a joke about the bad singing?

hellsbells99 · 05/12/2022 15:34

Eye much sounds like a joke to me …..and made to a comedian
