Wessex rude to comedians

This does astound me. The level of rudeness is breathtaking. The Earl and Countess of Wessex attended the Royal Variety Show and met performers backstage afterwards. Frank Skinner and Baddiel were doing their Three Lions song but Skinner was ill and his throat hurt.

“Sophie led the way, bearing in mind I’d had a really hard day and I battled on like a trooper. So she comes up and she says ‘Well, don’t give up your day job’. I thought ‘This is not how the royal walk thing works’. And we honestly said ‘Pardon?’ It’s supposed to be just banal compliments. I said ‘Was it that bad?’ And she said: ‘Well, you know, I could tell, you know, it’s not what you do’. And I said ‘Erm, well, normally we’re like comics’. She said, ‘Yeah, but you’re on screen aren’t you, you’re not used to a live crowd’.”
“I said: ‘Well we’ve done a bit of live stuff you know, stand-up and stuff’. But she’s sticking with it and she said ‘Yeah, but you haven’t done anywhere the size of this’. I said ‘Look, I did the Palladium last Sunday’. She looked at me like ‘you’re not supposed to be arguing, I don’t think you’re supposed to be arguing with me, you’re supposed to just nod’. It was like a really awkward thing.”
Skinner went on to say that Prince Edward also came up to him and Baddiel and criticised their performance. He said that while he could not recall his exact words, he remembered sarcastically replying “that’s a good review”. The comedian felt their conversational efforts were somewhat lacking for people of their stature."

Just remember this is a thread started by someone who spends many hours bad mouthing the RF but is all over the H&M threads saying how wonderful they are

ArcaneWireless · 08/12/2022 14:22

I think we may soon find out what outrage looks like.

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 27/07/2023 14:12

Anything exposing Badiel and Skinner as fragile cry baby banter bullies is flipping brilliant.

Good old Sophie.

ILikeDinosaurs · 27/07/2023 18:20

Comedians ARE thin-skinned though, it kind of goes with the territory. Bit thick of her to keep going after the first comment bombed, but then the royals aren't known for their sense of humour are they, or personality or work ethic. Funny how the RF thought that Sophie could give tips to Meghan when she's obviously so bad at the meets and greets herself!

Dombasle · 27/07/2023 18:24

The problem is that unless another witness verifies what was said and in what tone, it could be an anti royal entertainer with an agenda or a stuck up and rude member of the royal family or both!

I doubt Sophie will entertain giving a comeback to his comments.

DriftwoodOnTheShore · 27/07/2023 18:25

Baddiel has said nothing about it. But Skinner is still being a whiney child. <yawn>

Ohnonevermind · 27/07/2023 18:25

After their constant comments about Jason Lee, I personally don’t give a flying fuck about Baddiel and skinners thin skins. They’re a pair of arseholes. I’m sure they’re delighted that you’re worried about their feelings

Sophie, just remember, you’re only a woman and engaging in conversation with a self important man.
Know your place.

Oh don't be stupid! Being a woman hasn't anything to do with anything.

Can be just as easily:
Comedians, just remember, you’re only plebs and engaging in conversation with a self important royal.
Know your place.

It's interesting to see people fall over themselves to defend a woman who was being extremely rude but Skinner should have just accepted the banter, smile luv it's only a joke etc. There's even incitement to violence: 'I’d not mind if she gave him a kick somewhere painful.'

What's even worse is the digging up of dirt on Skinner and accusations that he is rude himself which are totally irrelevant to this incident - something we've just seen after the appalling racism directed towards Ngozi Fulani. How many threads are there about Meghan Markle right now? I don't even want to look. Smear the victim enough and we can defend our Glorious Royals and their Divine Right from the plebs who dare to say they're not perfect.

Why are some so overinvested in these people to the point where it comes across as though any comment that isn't fawning and obsequious is an attack on them personally? It's the sort of behaviour I expect from a 15 year old fan of Olivia Rodrigo.

Great post! I totally agree. The level of obsequiousness on here never fails to
surprise me!

I think if a male member of the RF made the joke it would have been laughed off

This is the problem with the aristocracy and the royals - they genuinely believe that we are all beneath them and they have total contempt for us commoners no matter what colour we are. The queen managed to conceal it but the rest of them seem unable to.

And you know how?

Couple of imbeciles, like the rest of the family. I would have asked her what exactly her job was!

I remember back in the day when she still worked in PR, she was cosying up to some Sheikh (something about her and Edward endorsing their ‘business ventures’) but who turned out to be a Sun reporter!

She apparently got caught calling the late Queen the “old dear” and slagging off Cherie Blair! 😂😂😂

To me it started off sounding like Sophie was trying to be jokey but he didn’t take it that way and then it all got a bit awkward. I dunno, I’m not a royalist but I’d be surprised if she was genuinely trying to be horrible.

Yeah, sounds like she was trying to be playful and sarcastic and he didn’t take it so well, so she doubled-down and it all got a bit awkward.

He took it fine.
If you listen to the show where they talk about it it’s all very light hearted and joking.
