The royal family

Wessex rude to comedians

This does astound me. The level of rudeness is breathtaking. The Earl and Countess of Wessex attended the Royal Variety Show and met performers backstage afterwards. Frank Skinner and Baddiel were doing their Three Lions song but Skinner was ill and his throat hurt.

“Sophie led the way, bearing in mind I’d had a really hard day and I battled on like a trooper. So she comes up and she says ‘Well, don’t give up your day job’. I thought ‘This is not how the royal walk thing works’. And we honestly said ‘Pardon?’ It’s supposed to be just banal compliments. I said ‘Was it that bad?’ And she said: ‘Well, you know, I could tell, you know, it’s not what you do’. And I said ‘Erm, well, normally we’re like comics’. She said, ‘Yeah, but you’re on screen aren’t you, you’re not used to a live crowd’.”
“I said: ‘Well we’ve done a bit of live stuff you know, stand-up and stuff’. But she’s sticking with it and she said ‘Yeah, but you haven’t done anywhere the size of this’. I said ‘Look, I did the Palladium last Sunday’. She looked at me like ‘you’re not supposed to be arguing, I don’t think you’re supposed to be arguing with me, you’re supposed to just nod’. It was like a really awkward thing.”
Skinner went on to say that Prince Edward also came up to him and Baddiel and criticised their performance. He said that while he could not recall his exact words, he remembered sarcastically replying “that’s a good review”. The comedian felt their conversational efforts were somewhat lacking for people of their stature."

So if it was a "joke" why double down on the insults when it is clear the other person is offended?

People of their stature??? What stature?? Second rate royals? Rude and sneering is exactly what I’d expect from the royals 🙄.

LookingFunny · 05/12/2022 15:36

antelopevalley · 05/12/2022 15:31

I know the "done thing" is never to say publically if the Royal Family are rude to you. I think people were more willing to stfu when the Queen was the Monarch, but I think that idea has gone now.
And I do not see why people should stfu if the Royals are rude to them. Being polite is the very minimum we should expect.

He's a comedian who isn't a very good singer. If she'd said it Katherine Jenkins or Russell Watson your outrage (and Skinner's) wouldn't be so silly.

Coxspurplepippin · 05/12/2022 15:37

'I know the "done thing" is never to say publically if the Royal Family are rude to you.'

Think it's far more likely that 99% of the time the RF aren't rude to the thousands of people they meet, giving no-one the opportunity to say they're rude. Unless of course you mean Meghan's seeming propensity for being rude to her staff?

It's just hilarious. Skinner's upset bevause she took the piss out of his terrible singing of a daft footie song. I hope we didn't have Gervias running to the media next with whose upset him Confused.

antelopevalley · 05/12/2022 15:38

He is a comedian who had a number one with this song. To say don't give up the day job as an opening remark was rude.
And she doubled down on her insults.
But fine. Many of you think rudeness is fine if that person is a member of the Royal Family. If Skinner had said this to Sophie if she was signing on stage there would rightly be public outrage. The rudeness would be acknowledged by everyone.

Skinner has a fragile ego if he can’t cope with a comment like that and he knew he wasn’t performing well anyway. Miserable puffed-up idiot.

DriftwoodOnTheShore · 05/12/2022 15:44

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

<Awards self a prize for guessing who posted this.>

Barrel scraping again?

Skinner is known to be a rude fucker.

mathanxiety · 05/12/2022 15:46

Is this a surprise?

Yes he's made a right tit out of himself. I do hope whenever he is on telly again he is ribbed mercilessly for it.

Theunamedcat · 05/12/2022 15:51

Why is everyone so fucking offended all of a sudden open season on the royal family its getting boring 😴

StressedToTheMaxxx · 05/12/2022 15:52

It sounds like a joke and he's taken it the wrong way.

stilldumdedumming · 05/12/2022 15:53

@Saucery how he is a sleaze and @DriftwoodOnTheShore is he known to be rude? I didn't know these things about him! I thought he was thought of as pretty nice? Am I being ignorant?

LookingFunny · 05/12/2022 15:58

Who knew 'its coming home it's coming home' was such an important song where one must critique the singer kindly and professionally, jibes about day jobs being so rude and disgusting! I hope Sophie and Edward reflect on their awfully rude behaviour. Tut TUT.

antelopevalley · 05/12/2022 16:01

@stilldumdedumming He is actually known to be pretty kind face-to-face. I am nit a fan of Frank Skinner, but he is not known to be rude.
The Wessexes though...

@antelopevalley I am old and I remember him interviewing Katie Price when she was pregnant with Harvey and he was really kind to her when others were being shitty - which has set my view of him I admit! His poetry podcast is really excellent. Tho irrelevant here!

antelopevalley · 05/12/2022 16:05

@stilldumdedumming I did not know that. That is lovely. I remember so much misogyny and insults towards her.

op have you heard the song, its fun, but dreadful.

Cheezybiscuit · 05/12/2022 16:18

Couple of imbeciles, like the rest of the family. I would have asked her what exactly her job was!

antelopevalley · 05/12/2022 16:23

@Samcro Yes I have heard it, I would have thought everyone in the UK would have.
It is a football song and very popular. It is not meant to be an amazing song technically, just fun and easy to sing on the stands.

He’s admitted himself that a lot of his early comedy was quite cruel and that he was sexist and homophobic. He did jokes about Heather Mills putting her best foot forward and live at an award show make a joke about the shape of Sophie Ellis Bexter’s face as she came on stage. If you watch him on comedy shows like Would I Lie to You etc he’s very sharp and cutting to others - but it’s clever and witty stuff too so usually quite funny.

I think Sophie misjudged the initial comment - presumably she was aiming for light teasing to someone she thought would banter back and then was very clumsy foot in mouth when it didn’t come out like she thought.

If he’d quipped back “well at least I have a day job” like a pp suggested it might have been a much shorter conversation.

I think if Sophie was known for rude behaviour or inappropriate comments (like Prince Philip) we’d have heard a lot more before now. I’d say this was poor judgement but not a normal practice.

AgentProvocateur · 05/12/2022 16:26

I had a sex dream about Frank Skinner about 20 years ago, and I’ve had a crush on him ever since. 😂

CowPie · 05/12/2022 16:28

Theunamedcat · 05/12/2022 15:51

Why is everyone so fucking offended all of a sudden open season on the royal family its getting boring 😴

And the perennial forelock-tugging was so much more varied and entertaining?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 05/12/2022 16:31

So everyone and his dog can say anything they like to you, but you mustn’t say anything critical at all. The boring ‘jokes ‘ about the ‘RF’ in every command performance ( actually gave up on them a long time ago because they are so unfunny) , oO don’t say you didn’t find them particularly amusing. Because comedians can dish it out, but they must never, never be expected to take it.

antelopevalley · 05/12/2022 16:32

@wordler Frank Skinner is known for being kind face-to-face.
