The royal family

Actually hopping they bring out the fancy stuff for the coronation

I've read that they might make the coronation a more modest affair then the queen's was, and I do see the reasoning. One one hand it would be bad optics to have the new king riding round in a golden carriage while people can't afford the heating.

But that got me thinking, they already have all the fine clothes, furs, jewelry etc anyway, it's not like they can take them down to cash converters if they don't use them. We're probably already paying for all that stuff to be stored and maintained as historical/ cultural artifacts, so they might as well use it.

Absobloomin lutely, it’ll be the only thing making boring old Charles remotely interesting and they need to use all their swag before it really becomes old hat, can’t imagine Wills and Kate trotting out like that.

BooksAndHooks · 09/09/2022 14:54

I agree. A lot of the cost will be security and policing of the event, scaling it back will still have that cost.

bringarosie · 09/09/2022 14:58

Yeah what's the point of a monarchy if we don't get a dose of pomp and circumstance every so often.

darmaka · 09/09/2022 23:21

I would hope not, at the start of Autumn when people's bills are soaring high, cost of living etc. Keep to a minimum - perhaps postpone the ceremony to a couple of years later.

The coronation is unlikely to be until at least next year; the queen waited around two years for her official ceremony.

Notateacheranymore · 09/09/2022 23:27

16 months from King George’s death to Elizabeth’s coronation.

Beansycheese · 09/09/2022 23:46

Camilla will get the family gold out

Beansycheese · 09/09/2022 23:47

That's not a criticism, I love Camilla, but she will go with her gut, not sit there ringing her hands about optics

Dinoteeth · 11/09/2022 01:18

I think they will pull out the gold coach no reason not it.

I expect the Coronation will be next spring. Enough time for things to settle after the funeral and time for the weather to get better.
Also they'll have enough pomp and ceremony this year with the jubilee and the funeral. We had and extra bank holiday for the jubilee and one for the funeral. I think we'll get one for the cornination too.

Given the Queen was so old his cornination is probably already planned. They'll just need to set at date and make final tweeks to it.

SpinCityBlues · 11/09/2022 01:26

I suspect Charles will sell it as, 'We as a family are privileged to be the keepers of the nation's treasured artefacts and traditions and to be able to put them on display for the country and the world, on this historic occasion, so that we might all be touched by the grace of our shared values' [continues on pages 5, 6 and 9]

Better hope that the coronation happens before one poster on here gets the State Coach broken up into parts to feed the starving.

nocoolnamesleft · 11/09/2022 01:29

Bread and circuses. It would be a shame to miss out on a decent circus.

The Roman ones were horrific

BigDayToday · 11/09/2022 01:31

I've been a bit fascinated by some of the images from the Queen's coronation. I'd never realised quite how over-the-top it all is. So yes, I'm hoping they have it all!

CaptainBarbosa · 11/09/2022 01:32

I don't think the coronation will be till late spring early summer next year to align with better weather.

Most of the cost is policing and security.

They already have the jewels, the carriages, the armed forces and horses.

So scaling it back isn't really an option, even if he gets driven in a car, with one marching band, the security and road closures are still what's needed and the cost is still there.

Polish up the gold, the pomp, the prestige and all I say.

Get Catherine and the other ladies some posh new frocs and celebrate 👏🏻

MinglingFlamingo · 11/09/2022 01:36

Wasn't the Queen's coronation during a recession because it was just after WW2 and the country was still recovering from that.

I really hope that it's a magnificent affair and not scaled back.

Dinoteeth · 11/09/2022 01:39

I really don't think they'll scale it back. For many people this may be the only Cornination they'll ever see. So should be the full works.

Riapia · 11/09/2022 07:46

People complain on MN if their birthday has not been celebrated lavishly enough.
Charles will only get one coronation.

😉😁

I agree, a grand event, plenty of ceremony and bling, the shiny stuff is already there - give it an airing.

NanaNelly · 11/09/2022 07:56

I want as much pomp and ceremony and history as possible.

I still can’t believe the sight we saw yesterday at the proclamation in the City of London. The costumes, the uniforms, it was surreal and I felt as if I’d gone back in time. Just fabulous.

...and he'd be correct. It's not like they'd be going out to buy a new golden coach etc.

security is the 'cost' but that'll be the same whether they get the traditional stuff out or if he uses a old fiesta & gardening clothes.

Joystir59 · 11/09/2022 07:56

I hope it's traditional with all the bling and ceremonial ritual. I love all that whilst being staunchly republican

NanaNelly · 11/09/2022 07:57

Maireas · 11/09/2022 07:51

😂😂😂

Don’t worry. We can stick it together again with the sticky side of a marmalade sandwich.

Floralei · 11/09/2022 07:59

if ever there was a time for a golden carriage! I want the full Monty. It’s not like they have to buy this stuff at inflated prices every time. On a cost per use basis, the more the merrier. It’s a moment in British history, not just showing off.
