Actually hopping they bring out the fancy stuff for the coronation

I've read that they might make the coronation a more modest affair then the queen's was, and I do see the reasoning. One one hand it would be bad optics to have the new king riding round in a golden carriage while people can't afford the heating.

But that got me thinking, they already have all the fine clothes, furs, jewelry etc anyway, it's not like they can take them down to cash converters if they don't use them. We're probably already paying for all that stuff to be stored and maintained as historical/ cultural artifacts, so they might as well use it.

I would hope not, at the start of Autumn when people's bills are soaring high, cost of living etc. Keep to a minimum - perhaps postpone the ceremony to a couple of years later.

It's unlikely to be this autumn. The last coronation was over a year after the King's death.
Likelihood it won't be until next summer at the earliest.

One of the things the uk is good at is pomp and circumstance.
Surely a coronation is the very best reason to go all out on that.

As others have said, the biggest costs will be security and policy type costs. That will be needed regardless of how big or small they go in terms of clothes, jewels and carriages, all of which they already own.

I'm not particularly a royalist, but if we are going to have a royal family I do feel we should just do these kind of events properly.

A big coronation is likely to bring it money to many other people/businesses around the country too, through tourism, event management, businesses making money on souvenirs, and all that kind of stuff.

I want as much pomp and ceremony and history as possible.

I still can’t believe the sight we saw yesterday at the proclamation in the City of London. The costumes, the uniforms, it was surreal and I felt as if I’d gone back in time. Just fabulous.

It was amazing wasn't it. I loved it. The outfits and all the different titles people have. Truly Marvellous

Thanks @Iamthewombat , it was a light-hearted post at nearly midnight on a Friday. But I am glad you took it a an opportunity to educate me <doffs cap> I hope you felt suitably superior after that.

RustyBear · 11/09/2022 13:58

Maybe Charles wants to avoid having to ride in the gold coach - apparently it's incredibly uncomfortable

SpinCityBlues · 11/09/2022 14:18

Wasn't it commissioned by 'Mad' George III?

Wafflesnsniffles · 11/09/2022 14:27

Yes. Im looking forward to seeing the gold state coach etc. With all the armed guards in their finery. The marching bands. Hopefully on a beautifully sunny but not hot day. Ill be glued to the tv (not literally!)

Lollypop701 · 11/09/2022 15:01

Charles has had a long time to plan this…. The least of it should be the gold carriage!!!! If the world doesn’t go into shock at the pomp and glory then I shall be truly disappointed!!!

upinaballoon · 11/09/2022 15:09

Lovely thread. Yes, bring on the bling. I didn't realise until a little while ago that the gold coach has pictures on the sides.
Next late spring/early summer?
I enjoyed yesterday's stuff, the ex-prime ministers at the Council etc. Did the proclamation say ' our Sovereign Lady Queen Elizabeth, of happy memory'? If the word wasn't 'happy' it was something like that.

carefullycourageous · 11/09/2022 15:10

I think it would be a bad look if they take it too far. Elizabeth's coronation cost the equivalant of >£40 million.

carefullycourageous · 11/09/2022 15:12

I find the sheer expense of the monarchy depressing, and by next spring we will be seeing lots of business closures and repossessions potentially, so it could all look dreadful.

upinaballoon · 11/09/2022 15:13

A good lot of the pomp will be created by the C of E building and robes and singing, which are things which go on all the time.

if ever there was a time for a golden carriage! I want the full Monty. It’s not like they have to buy this stuff at inflated prices every time. On a cost per use basis, the more the merrier. It’s a moment in British history, not just showing off.

I want all the gold and jewls, but I can live very easily without seeing the King go the full monty... 🤭

TeenDivided · 11/09/2022 15:16

My DF was early 20s for the last coronation. he says the procession took over 2 hours to go past and had lots of soldiers from armies across the Commonwealth. (He actually attended not only Elizabeth's coronation but also George VI's).
I suspect it will be pomp whilst still being more modest.

carefullycourageous · 11/09/2022 15:20

Might be harder to get buy-in from other countries, presumably the Commonwealth countries will be more low-key than those countries in 1952.

It is more complex now, e.g. countries looking to remove our monarch as head of state.

Sprogonthetyne · 11/09/2022 20:22

Wow, more replies than I was expecting. Glad I'm not the only one looking forward to the ridiculous amount of bling.

Yes it did. I loved that too! What also struck me was the sight of all those people wearing what was essentially elaborate fancy dress, spouting 17th century language all without a trace of irony and completely owning it and being fabulous. Bring on all the bling I say! 😂

I actually felt a bit scared when I saw some of them. I could just imagine hundreds of years ago lying in bed and suddenly hearing guards stomping down the corridor to get you because the Then King or Queen had declared - off with their head!

HundredMilesAnHour · 11/09/2022 21:01

I was walking home from the gym today past the Tower of London (I live nearby), actually heading to Waitrose to buy some fruit, when I heard lots of stomping and then shouting. Turns out it was the proclamation starting. It was fabulous. Some of the tourists looked a bit baffled but I felt proud to be British. We do pomp so well. It brought a tear to my eye (one of many tears over the past few days).

So I say bring on the bling for the coronation!

Just seen an interview with someone who was one of the Queen's Maids of Honour at her coronation. I wonder what they do with Kings? Do they have Gentlemen of Honour?

Beansycheese · 11/09/2022 21:19

Also, as a pp said it's cost per wear on the Crown Jewels/ golden coach. It wouldn't matter if they did the coronation in a Nissan Cherry, all the money is spent on security. So we might as well get kudos as a country for it

bellac11 · 11/09/2022 21:22

Charles has the right to be Kingzilla about the coronation

Ive surprised myself at how much pomp and ceremony I want to see, i want to see the full shebang

He wont be able to wear the same bling as his mother though, he wouldnt wear the crown she wore I presume? Or is it for a king as well?

smilesy · 11/09/2022 21:26

Yes, I believe the Crowns are unisex. I can’t quite remember but the crown they use on the coronation is Edward the something and then there is the Imperial State Crown that is worn on a more everyday basis ( if you can say that about a crown). The one that’s worn at the state opening of parliament.

upinaballoon · 11/09/2022 21:35

I truly don't know if he will wear the same crown, but I doubt he'll be wearing diamond earrings. Mind you.............
