King Charles & Queen Camilla? Really?

Can anyone honestly imagine these two carrying the royal family forward once the Queen dies?

I think that they will most likely be viewed as a tolerable bridge to King William and Queen Catherine.

WorstXmasEver · 11/02/2022 04:38

They should step aside.

Yes! Well, I mean Charles isn't ideal but we've had enough time to get used to the idea of him being king we've known it for 70 odd years. Camilla is the 'better half'

Joystir59 · 11/02/2022 04:44

I think the monarchy will fade and fail after the Queen. The public will simply no longer have any regard for them and without that factor the royal family cannot survive in the public purse for long.

Isn't the whole point of a royal family that it is determined by birth and archaic rules? It's not like x factor where the public have a say.

Either accept you're a subject or be a republican. Being upset with who is King and Queen just seems to be an inconsistent in between position.

TigerLilyTail · 11/02/2022 04:56

I don't think anyone will really care that much.

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 11/02/2022 05:07

We did try in 1649 with a previous Charles but that didn't work out.

You do know it's not a popularity contest, right ?

TulipsGarden · 11/02/2022 05:09

He's the Queen's firstborn child and she's his wife, so there isn't really any choice in the matter.

Nightlystroll · 11/02/2022 05:19

I have regard for him and Camilla I think they'll be really good. I think he's a thoughtful man who has often been ahead of his time with his thinking. Without the royal family people will elect Boris or Tony or Dave or Ant and Dec. Ugh.

TicTacHoh · 11/02/2022 05:22

I think they will do fine

AlDanvers · 11/02/2022 05:23

I dont think most people will care tbh. Certainly not enough for this to "end the monarchy".

He has been in line to be King since he was born, it's not a surprise. Camillas, future title is being changed. She would have been doing exactly the same duties. She will just be called something different.

Don't see the big deal.

GrendelsGrandma · 11/02/2022 05:26

It's not the x-factor (rex factor?) where the public decides, we're supposed to be their subjects and they're chosen by God to rule us because they're better than us!

Any monarch coming after the queen is going to be less popular. Commonwealth countries will start appointing their own heads of state. The press will be less deferential.

I used to be keen on scrapping the monarchy and would still vote for that in a referendum, but since brexit I'm not sure this country would make a good choice for president. We'd probably vote in Nigel Farage or Jeremy Clarkson or something.

Seema002 · 11/02/2022 05:31

The whole idea of a Royal family in this day and age is ridiculous anyway. SM shows them up for the entitled , small minded insular fools they are. They are just a PR machine and tourist attraction. It really doesn't matter which of them is playing King and Queen as it makes naff all difference to day to day life IMO.

President Johnson Confused - imagine!

You surely don't believe that what the public think will have any effect Hmm Also bear in mind that there are a lot of Commonwealth countries who have views as well.

UnsuitableHat · 11/02/2022 05:45

I think most of us have only known the Queen as monarch so find it hard to imagine anyone else in that position. Plus the fairytale tropes of ‘king’ and ‘queen’ are quite pervasive & people invest them with magical properties as if anyone holding those titles needs to be a special being in some way. But they ARE just titles, and have been held by some pretty flawed people in history. And they’re hereditary so if we accept the monarchy we’re accepting that we don’t get a say.
I love the idea of ‘Rex factor’ btw, whoever mentioned that.

This. The nation is tolerating Boris Johnson and his corrupt government without taking to the streets in protest. Nobody is going to bat an eyelid about C and C.
PAFMO · 11/02/2022 06:07

As you'll see from the numerous other threads about the same thing started this week- yes, some people think it's fine. Other people don't.

As the Queen's mother was called Queen Elizabeth, and Queen Mary was called Queen Mary etc etc, it would have been strange were she not to be called Queen.

And I'd say that both of them will continue to do the great job they're doing now. I think William and Kate will also be fine when it's their turn.

Joystir59 · 11/02/2022 07:42

I know they are born to their roles not chosen but I do think they will come off the public purse quite quickly once public favour for them is lost. Them receiving public funds it a political affair.

Well, what did you think would happen?

FrecklesMalone · 11/02/2022 07:47

I wish it was meant to be Andrew and then hopefully the whole of the monarchy would fuck off!

PermanentTemporary · 11/02/2022 07:49

'Rex Factor', brilliant. Presented by Nicholas Witchell.

Yes, really. Welcome to hereditary rule. Agreed that the alternative is probably President Farage so whatever.

fuzzwuss · 11/02/2022 07:51

I think the royal family has such wealth and owns so much land, that they are in no way dependent on the pubic purse. I do think that Charles and Camilla is missing a trick, if they want to shore up the popularity of the RF then that is not the best way to do that. For me the royal family is something that is worth retaining in a slimmed down version i.e. not so many houses, and with the crown estates no longer in their possession.
