The royal family

King Charles & Queen Camilla? Really?

Can anyone honestly imagine these two carrying the royal family forward once the Queen dies?

OP posts:

I remember at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee people were saying that no-one was interested in the RF anymore, and that no one would celebrate, it would be ignored, fall flat and the Queen would be humiliated. As it turned out, it was really successful, London was packed, there were parties all over the country. Obviously Charles won't the same but he'll do well. He's knowledgeable about his role, he knows heads of states and he'll provide continuation.

Chilledchablis1 · 11/02/2022 09:19

My late DM said that after the Abdication, many people thought the Royal Family would fade away however you only have to look at the crowds flocking to celebrate the Silver , Golden and Diamond Jubilees and the recent Royal weddings to see that they remain popular.
What do people think we should have instead ? President Johnson ?

IcedPurple · 11/02/2022 09:48

@TigerLilyTail

I don't think anyone will really care that much.
I agree. If you look at history, monarchies have only been abolished in times of war or great upheaval. Not because some people weren't crazy about a particular king or his wife.

Getting rid of the monarchy would be a massive headache, as it has been entwined in every aspect of the British state for 1000 years and more. People may not especially like Charles or Camilla but that will not be enough to prompt such a major step as abolishing the monarchy.

More likely, if Charles goes ahead with his plans to 'slim down' the royal family, the monarchy will somewhat fade from public view, and be closer to a ceremonial head of state.

EdithWeston · 11/02/2022 09:55

About a third of nations are monarchies - it's a very successful arrangement

Charles is planning to slim down, so it will be more like Scandinavia and the Netherlands - and in terms of having a more equal society, that's a good role model.

YABU

lol Grin at rex factor.

OP, try and read some history.

queenofarles · 11/02/2022 10:54

King Charles & Queen Camilla? Really? yes really, he is the first born and she’s his wife .

I hope I don’t see any of these weird Diana photoshops wearing the Kohinoor crown and coronation gown next to Charles Confused

Monopolyiscrap · 12/02/2022 00:29

Okay all those saying the choice is Charles or Boris, tell me any other country that has a President that has been involved in as many scandals as Charles has?

MuffinStrops · 12/02/2022 00:34

@WelliesWithHeels

I think that they will most likely be viewed as a tolerable bridge to King William and Queen Catherine.
This.
MuffinStrops · 12/02/2022 00:37

@FrecklesMalone

I wish it was meant to be Andrew and then hopefully the whole of the monarchy would fuck off!
The thought of Andrew as King is stomach churning. What would actually happen ? Would there be protests and revolution? Or would people just accept it?
MillieMoonbeam · 12/02/2022 00:38

“He's the Queen's firstborn child and she's his wife, so there isn't really any choice in the matter”

This ^^

There’s no choice 🤷🏻‍♀️

ClariceQuiff · 12/02/2022 00:40

We need to become a republic - no monarch, no matter how well-loved, well-behaved or dutiful should be allowed to 'reign over us' by sheer accident of their birth.

It's tempting to make the issue about individuals and their faults, but that spectacularly misses the point, in that we do not get to choose. It's sheer good fortune that Elizabeth II seems to be a decent human being - but she's no more decent than Betty Smith, retired factory-worker, who lives down the road.

Until 1982, when William was born, we were one tragedy away from having Andrew as heir apparent.

Lolliepoppie · 12/02/2022 00:42

I think they’ll do ok, Charles seems to have mellowed a lot.
Although I hate thinking that the Queen will die, IMO she is amazing.

Monopolyiscrap · 12/02/2022 00:48

The idea that we should get whoever happens to be born next is a ridiculous one.

Iflyaway · 12/02/2022 00:52

Charles is planning to slim down, so it will be more like Scandinavia and the Netherlands

Netherlands has a fairly large royal family. The king has 3 brothers.

Can't see the royal English kids cycling to the local school though as the Dutch ones do. (one's doing a year at Atlantic College in Wales along with another Euri royal. Spain I think).

Monopolyiscrap · 12/02/2022 00:57

He is talking about slimming down, but not taking less of taxpayers money. It is a PR exercise only.

ShippingNews · 12/02/2022 01:05

That is an unfair comparison, though. Charles has been in his role for his entire life - presidents are only in their role for a few years.

A president can do all sorts of nasty things during their limited tenure, and then someone else is voted in and the previous person is forgotten. A prince of Wales, on the other hand, is judged ( endlessly) for their actions for their whole life.

Monopolyiscrap · 12/02/2022 01:10

So there isn't some terrible issue with a President after all?

Charles has been constantly involved in scandals. Most recent one was the allegation of cash for honours.

Billandben444 · 12/02/2022 06:36

I know they are born to their roles not chosen but I do think they will come off the public purse quite quickly once public favour for them is lost. Them receiving public funds it a political affair.

It's uneducated, ill-informed posts like this from the OP that make me despair sometimes - there really is another life form out there. The thought they might ever be given the power to vote in a president... 😂😂😂

Five minutes of research would educate you re public funds and stepping out of your social political bubble would show you the huge support tge monarchy has.

Really? Donald Trump, Jacob Zuma, Nixon, Mugabe... The list goes on and on.

We could be here all day but without having to even think back very far or to anywhere even slightly off our normal radar I'll start with a certain Mr Trump 🤷🏼‍♀️
MrsLargeEmbodied · 12/02/2022 08:06

they will do a good job, they are good people.

Berengaria1 · 12/02/2022 08:09

Yes. Charles has been married to Camilla longer than he was married to Diana. Life is short and it moves on.

I was quoting the OP so I think this is meant for them?

notanotheroneagain · 12/02/2022 08:59

Really?
Donald Trump, Jacob Zuma, Nixon, Mugabe... The list goes on and on

And you can kick them out when they mess up.
That's the point.
