King Charles & Queen Camilla? Really?

Can anyone honestly imagine these two carrying the royal family forward once the Queen dies?

And you can kick them out when they mess up.That's the point.

Wait, you think those on the list had gleaming histories before they were elected and only went rogue during their presidency?

liveforsummer · 12/02/2022 09:43

Also the likes of mugabe and Castro were in power as presidents for 30 odd years they weren't just kicked out after a term

MiddleOfThePack · 12/02/2022 09:46

It's a monarchy and by the rules, they will be King and Queen if only for a relatively short time. Why does anyone really care anyway? What difference does it make? I'm a monarchist by the way, but I actually couldn't care less who is the reigning Monarch.

Theyellowblanketofdeath · 12/02/2022 09:49

@CheeseCakeSunflowers

We did try in 1649 with a previous Charles but that didn't work out.
Yup. We could have a nice wee civil war, remove the monarch (didn't want to say what actually happened for fear of inciting treason) and then end up with a puritan who cancels Christmas.

It's not like Charles and Camila are actually going to do anything of any consequence other than lots of smiling and waving. Let them crack on with it.

Phos · 12/02/2022 09:51

Yes. Effing really.

Let’s take off our Diana tinted glasses and look at the fact he’s the heir to the damn throne and actually the two of them since they married have done a fantastic job as working Royals. She’s been dignified and dedicated in the face of massive and not entirely deserved criticism.

Funny no one mentions how many affairs saint Di had.

ValleyO · 12/02/2022 09:52

It just adds to my general feeling that the Royals are a joke.

The Queen will be someone the King shagged around with for years behind his wife’s back.

And we are supposed to revere these people?

Right!

BurningTheToast · 12/02/2022 10:02

If he was still married to Diana then we'd have a queen who shagged around behind the king's back. There are plenty of historical precendents for that but at least Charles only had an affair with Camilla. And they seem to be a well-suited couple - it's a shame they didn't marry in the first place.

Frankly, I'd prefer Queen Camilla.

MistyForTheWin · 12/02/2022 10:02

Well if anyone's interested, The Rex Factor is actually a podcast about the monarchy in the uk and different countries. They interviewed Charles Spencer in November, he's now an historian apparently 🤷‍♀️

MistyForTheWin · 12/02/2022 10:03

Also, I'm not too fussed about Charles being King but i think Camilla is great.

ValleyO · 12/02/2022 10:07

But he’s not still married to Diana.

Isntisironic1 · 12/02/2022 10:08

@Joystir59

I think the monarchy will fade and fail after the Queen. The public will simply no longer have any regard for them and without that factor the royal family cannot survive in the public purse for long.
These comments always make me laugh. The royal family bring in much needed revenue to the uk. More than £700 million in 2020 to be precise, they get roughly 25% and then the rest goes into the ‘public purse’
Isntisironic1 · 12/02/2022 10:12

@ClariceQuiff

We need to become a republic - no monarch, no matter how well-loved, well-behaved or dutiful should be allowed to 'reign over us' by sheer accident of their birth.

It's tempting to make the issue about individuals and their faults, but that spectacularly misses the point, in that we do not get to choose. It's sheer good fortune that Elizabeth II seems to be a decent human being - but she's no more decent than Betty Smith, retired factory-worker, who lives down the road.

Until 1982, when William was born, we were one tragedy away from having Andrew as heir apparent.

And where do you suppose we generate the £400+ million that we would lose every year? Lala land?

To be fair, he has a History degree from Oxford University. He's written a few books.
bellamountain · 12/02/2022 10:14

Surely if the Queen could rewrite the rules, we would have Queen Anne.

queenofarles · 12/02/2022 10:15

Exactly Phos , no one mentions or feel sorry for all the wives of the men Diana was linked to.

What Charles and Camilla did was totally wrong and unacceptable , but let’s not leave out that bit about Diana too, in my view they are all insane and it’s quite miraculous W&H are functioning normally , I hope !

Abra1d1 · 12/02/2022 10:17

I like Camilla. Seems down to earth and genuine.

ValleyO · 12/02/2022 10:19

The Diana thing is irrelevant. She’s dead. She won’t be Queen. And they were divorced anyway.

For me, it’s a bigger issue. What are the monarchy for? Are we still supposed to respect them? Why are we still paying for their existence?

I can’t say I lose sleep about any of this, and I have nothing against Camilla as a person.

I just think it’s a bit of a farce that this pair end up being the ones ‘born to reign over us’.

@liveforsummer

That is the point. The people had the choice to vote them in. If they felt a candidate is unacceptable, they chose not to vote that person in power.

As for Castro and Mugabe. Their countries were not democracies. To top it off, they were initially loved by a majority of their native publics (it's all long and complicated, they were disliked by the west).

Here in the UK we would be able to vote people in or out.

Monopolyiscrap · 12/02/2022 10:30

@Isntisironic1 that is disingenuous. That money is about the Crown Estates, rented out farms and land and property. It makes a lot of money. We would get it all without the Royal Family. A farmer still farms and pays rent whether to the Queen or the government. The Royal Family are doing nothing.

queenofarles · 12/02/2022 10:33

Who said they reign over us? It’s all Ceremonial , the British Monarchy still has a non political role.

mustlovegin · 12/02/2022 10:35

Another anti royal thread. Yawn...

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/02/2022 10:35

Don’t much care really but I quite like her.

The royal family do nothing? Educate yourself on the reality. What about tourism?

notanotheroneagain · 12/02/2022 10:36

It has been studied over and over, the British RF dose not bring any extra money to the country.

Versailles is the most visited palace, in Europe even the Louvre (former palace) has more visitors.

Maybe we can make money opening up their big palaces too.

Britain falls around number 10 for tourism.

Studies also show that they bring no particular value to charities either. Countries with no royalty do not have their charities suffering due to lack of royal patronages.

Letsleepingcats · 12/02/2022 10:51

The soft diplomacy element is oft overlooked. They are much admired around the world and leaders love to be the recipient of a Royal banquet. Must bring in millions in trade etc.
